In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

You have prayed your five fard. You have knocked out the sunnah before and after them. Now you are wondering what those "extra" prayers you keep hearing about actually are.
They are called nafl prayers — and they are one of the most direct paths to Allah's love in the entire tradition.
The Short Answer
Nafl (نَفْل) literally means "extra" or "voluntary." In the language of fiqh, a nafl prayer is any salah that is not fard (obligatory), wajib (necessary), or a specific sunnah muakkadah (emphasized sunnah).
Examples include Tahajjud in the last third of the night, Duha in the mid-morning, Ishraq after sunrise, Awwabin between Maghrib and Isha, Salat al-Istikhara, Salat al-Hajah, and any 2 rakats you offer outside the prohibited times.
The reward is enormous: closeness to Allah, a cushion for any deficiency in your fard on the Day of Judgment, and — as the Prophet ﷺ taught — the very path to becoming beloved to Allah.
The Evidence
The most famous evidence for the power of nafl prayer is a Hadith Qudsi narrated by Abu Hurairah:
مَا تَقَرَّبَ إِلَيَّ عَبْدِي بِشَيْءٍ أَحَبَّ إِلَيَّ مِمَّا افْتَرَضْتُ عَلَيْهِ، وَمَا يَزَالُ عَبْدِي يَتَقَرَّبُ إِلَيَّ بِالنَّوَافِلِ حَتَّى أُحِبَّهُ
Ma taqarraba ilayya 'abdi bi-shay'in ahabba ilayya mimma iftaradtu 'alayh, wa ma yazalu 'abdi yataqarrabu ilayya bin-nawafili hatta uhibbahu
"My servant does not draw near to Me with anything more beloved to Me than what I have made obligatory upon him. And My servant continues to draw near to Me through voluntary acts (nawafil) until I love him."
Read that carefully. Fard is the doorway to Allah's pleasure — nothing is more beloved to Him than what He commanded. But nafl is the doorway to Allah's love.
The Quran uses the exact same word for the night prayer of the Prophet ﷺ:
وَمِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَتَهَجَّدْ بِهِ نَافِلَةً لَّكَ عَسَىٰ أَن يَبْعَثَكَ رَبُّكَ مَقَامًا مَّحْمُودًا
Wa minal-layli fatahajjad bihi nafilatan lak, asa an yab'athaka rabbuka maqaman mahmuda
"And rise for prayer during the night as an additional worship (nafilah) for you; perhaps your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station."
— (Surah Al-Isra, 17:79)
Aisha (ra) said the Prophet ﷺ was so consistent with the 2 rakats before Fajr, Duha, and the night prayer that these were features of his life, not add-ons. And on Judgment Day, nafl is explicitly designated as the safety net for any shortcoming in fard, as narrated in Sunan Abi Dawud 864.
Types of Nafl Prayers You Can Pray
Nafl is not vague. The tradition names specific, structured nafl prayers with recommended times.
Tahajjud (Night Prayer)
Prayed after sleeping and waking, ideally in the last third of the night. Minimum 2 rakats, no fixed maximum. The most beloved voluntary prayer of the Prophet ﷺ. See how to pray tahajjud for the full method.
Duha / Chasht
The mid-morning prayer, from about 15-20 minutes after sunrise until just before Zuhr. The Prophet ﷺ said 2 rakats of Duha covers the charity due on every joint of the body each day. See how to pray duha prayer.
Ishraq
Prayed shortly after sunrise. Whoever prays Fajr in congregation, sits in dhikr until sunrise, then prays 2 rakats gets the reward of a complete Hajj and Umrah.
Awwabin
Between 2 and 6 rakats prayed between Maghrib and Isha.
Salat at-Tasbih
A 4-rakat prayer with 300 tasbihs across the postures. Recommended daily, weekly, monthly, or at least once in a lifetime.
Salat al-Hajah
Prayed when you have a specific need — health, provision, guidance, relief. See how to pray salatul hajat.
Salat al-Istikhara
Prayed when deciding something and you want Allah's guidance on whether it is good for you. See how to pray istikhara step by step.
General Nawafil
Any 2 rakats prayed any time outside the prohibited windows, with the intention of drawing closer to Allah.
Prohibited Times for Nafl
Do not begin a nafl prayer during these windows:
- From sunrise until the sun has fully risen (about 15-20 minutes)
- When the sun is at its zenith, just before Zuhr time begins
- From when the sun begins to yellow until it fully sets
- After Fajr until sunrise, and after Asr until sunset
Prayers with a specific reason (like Tahiyyat al-Masjid) are permitted even in these windows according to many scholars.

Don't Let Doubt Win
Waswas — the whispering doubt — loves nafl. Because there is no strict obligation forcing you through, shaytan can weigh you down with unnecessary questions until you give up.
"Did I make the niyyah correctly?" You did. Intention lives in the heart, not the tongue. If you stood up to pray Duha, that was the niyyah.
"Do I pray 4 rakats of Duha or 8?" Any even number from 2 upward is valid. Start with 2. Never let the ideal become the enemy of the actual.
"What if I did not do the tasbih correctly?" Do your best. Nafl is meant to be light and joyful, not an exam.
The whole point of nafl is flexibility — Allah opened this door so you could walk through easily. Do not let the whispering close a door Allah left wide open. Pray your 2 rakats. Move on. Repeat tomorrow.

Common Questions
What should I recite in nafl prayers? Any Quran you know. Al-Fatiha is required; after that, any surah or verses. Recite what you have — sincerity matters more than length.
Can I pray nafl sitting down? Yes. Nafl can be prayed sitting even without a valid excuse, though you get half the reward of praying standing. Fard prayer, by contrast, must be standing if you are able.
Is Witr a nafl prayer? No. Witr is either wajib (Hanafi) or sunnah muakkadah (Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali). The Prophet ﷺ was firm about it and told the ummah never to leave it.
Can I combine nafl with another intention? Some overlap — Duha and Ishraq are the same prayer at slightly different times, and Tahiyyat al-Masjid can be combined with the sunnah of Fajr or Zuhr if you enter the mosque and pray them.
What is the reward for consistent nafl? Beyond the Hadith Qudsi about Allah's love, the Prophet ﷺ said Allah will complete any deficient fard from the servant's nafl on Judgment Day. See what is taraweeh for the Ramadan nafl that carries perhaps the greatest concentrated reward of the year.
Closing — Nafl as a Love Language
Fard is what Allah requires from you. Nafl is what you offer back.
Any relationship built only on obligations stays thin. The ones that go deep are where both sides give more than they had to. When you rise for 2 quiet rakats of Tahajjud, or pray Duha in a busy morning, or sneak Salat al-Hajah between meetings — you are telling Allah: I did not have to. I wanted to.
That is the language of love, and the Hadith Qudsi is His answer: He continues drawing near to those who draw near through nafl.
Two rakats. Today. That is where it begins.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between nafl and sunnah prayer?
Sunnah prayers are the specific voluntary prayers the Prophet ﷺ prayed consistently — like the 2 rakats before Fajr or the 4 before Zuhr. Nafl is a broader category that includes every voluntary prayer beyond fard, wajib, and sunnah muakkadah. Every sunnah is a nafl in the wide sense, but not every nafl is a specific sunnah. Nafl gives you flexibility to pray extra whenever you want closeness to Allah, outside the fixed sunnah slots.
Can women pray nafl prayers during their period?
No. A menstruating woman is exempt from all salah — fard, wajib, sunnah, and nafl — during her cycle. This is a mercy, not a punishment. She is not required to make up the nafl prayers she missed. She can still make dua, dhikr, listen to Quran, give charity, and read Islamic knowledge. Her spiritual life continues, just not through salah until her cycle ends and she performs ghusl.
Do nafl prayers make up for missing fard prayers?
On the Day of Judgment, the Prophet ﷺ said Allah will ask the angels to check if the servant's fard prayers were complete. If any fard was deficient, Allah will say: See if My servant has any voluntary (nafl) prayers, and let his obligatory prayers be completed with them. (Sunan Abi Dawud 864). This is not permission to skip fard — it is a mercy for the honest deficiencies in prayers you actually performed. Fard remains fard; nafl is the safety net.
Can I make up missed sunnah prayers with a nafl?
The scholars agree that any voluntary prayer prayed with the intention of qada (making up) the specific missed sunnah counts. If Fajr time is running out and you cannot pray the 2 rakats sunnah before Fajr, you can pray them after sunrise as qada. For general nafl, you can pray 2 rakats any time (outside prohibited times) with the intention of extra closeness — no need to label it as replacement for anything specific.
Is Tarawih a nafl prayer?
Yes, Tarawih is classified as a sunnah muakkadah nafl prayer prayed in Ramadan after Isha. It is not fard — missing it is not a sin — but the Prophet ﷺ prayed it and encouraged it, saying whoever stands the nights of Ramadan in faith and hope of reward will have their previous sins forgiven. Whether prayed in the mosque with the imam or at home, Tarawih is one of the most rewarding nafl acts of the year.
