How to Pray Istikhara Step by Step — The Complete Guide

You have a decision in front of you that you cannot resolve on your own.

You have thought it through, made your lists, consulted people you trust — and you still do not know. Not because you are indecisive, but because the right answer is not visible from where you are standing. You need access to knowledge you do not have.

Why This Is Actually Hard

Jabir ibn Abdullah reported:

Step-by-Step: How to Pray Istikhara

Step 1: Choose your timing

Istikhara can be prayed at any time except during the three prohibited times:

• When the sun is rising (until it has fully risen)
• When the sun is at its zenith (around solar noon)
• When the sun is setting (until it has fully set)

The best time is at night, particularly after Isha or during Tahajjud — when the heart is quieter and the distractions of the day have faded. But do not delay it indefinitely waiting for the "perfect" time. Any permissible time works.

Step 2: Make wudu

Perform two rakats of nafl (voluntary) prayer with the intention of Istikhara. There is no specific surah required for each rakat — recite what you know after Al-Fatihah. Some scholars say to recite Surah Al-Kafirun in the first rakat and Surah Al-Ikhlas in the second, but this is a recommendation, not a condition.

• Takbiratul Ihram (opening takbir), recite Al-Fatihah and another surah

Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi'ilmika wa astaqdiruka bi-qudratika wa as'aluka min fadlikal-'azim, fa innaka taqdiru wa la aqdiru wa ta'lamu wa la a'lamu wa anta 'allamul-ghuyub. Allahumma in kunta ta'lamu anna hadhal-amra khayrun li fi dini wa ma'ashi wa 'aqibati amri faqdurhu li wa yassirhu li thumma barik li fihi. Wa in kunta ta'lamu anna hadhal-amra sharrun li fi dini wa ma'ashi wa 'aqibati amri fasrifhu 'anni wasrifni 'anhu waqdur liyal-khayra haythu kana thumma ardini bih.

"O Allah, I seek Your guidance by Your knowledge, I seek Your capability by Your power, and I ask You from Your great bounty. For You have power and I have none. You know and I know not. You are the Knower of unseen things.

O Allah, if You know this matter [and here you name the specific decision in your heart] to be good for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affair — then ordain it for me, make it easy for me, and bless me in it.

And if You know it to be bad for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affair — then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and ordain for me the good wherever it may be, then make me pleased with it."

• Move forward with whatever you are inclined toward after the prayer
• If a door opens easily, walk through it
• If obstacles consistently appear from one direction, pay attention

Common Questions

Do I say the dua in Arabic or can I say it in English? The prayer (the two rakats) requires Arabic. The dua itself should ideally be in Arabic, though saying it in your own language while learning the Arabic is permissible. Once you know the Arabic dua, use it — the specific words were taught by the Prophet ﷺ.

What if I decide not to do the thing after Istikhara — was the prayer wasted? Never. Every sincere act of worship has its own reward.
