In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

There are moments in the morning when the world is fully awake but the day has not yet consumed you. The light is clean, the mind is fresh, and something in you is ready.
That is the time of duha. And the Prophet ﷺ, who understood the human being better than any teacher, made this prayer one of his consistent morning practices.
Most Muslims have heard of duha. Far fewer pray it consistently. Here is the complete guide — how to pray it, when, how many rakats, and how to build a duha habit that outlasts your initial motivation.
Why Duha Is Worth Building Into Your Morning
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Every morning, every single joint of yours must pay a charity. Saying SubhanAllah is a charity. Saying Alhamdulillah is a charity. Saying La ilaha illallah is a charity. Saying Allahu Akbar is a charity. Enjoining the good is a charity. Forbidding evil is a charity. And two rakats of duha prayer suffices for all of this."
— (Muslim 720, sunnah.com)
Read that slowly. Two rakats of duha — roughly 3-5 minutes — is the equivalent of giving charity on behalf of every joint in your body every morning. Your spine. Your wrists. Your knees. Your fingers. Three hundred and sixty joints.
This is not motivational language. This is a statement about what Allah accepts and how He counts the value of small, consistent acts.
Step-by-Step: How to Pray Duha
Step 1: Know the window
Duha prayer begins approximately 15-20 minutes after sunrise — after the time when it is disliked to pray (just at sunrise). It ends when the sun passes its zenith, which is the beginning of Dhuhr time.
The optimal time is when the morning heat has begun to build — mid-morning. The Arabic name duha (ضُحى) literally refers to the brightness and warmth of mid-morning.
Step 2: Have valid wudu
Duha prayer requires wudu like any salah. If you prayed Fajr with wudu that has not been broken, you can pray duha directly without renewing wudu. This is one reason praying duha shortly after Fajr's post-prayer adhkar is practical — your wudu is fresh, your mind is clear.
Step 3: Set the intention
The intention (niyyah) for duha is internal — "I intend to pray 2 (or 4, or 8) rakats of duha prayer for Allah." No verbal statement is required; intention is in the heart.
Step 4: Pray in sets of 2 rakats
Each pair of rakats follows standard salah structure:
- Standing, making takbir, reciting Al-Fatiha + a surah
- Ruku, sujud (two), sitting
- Second rakat same
- Tashahhud and salam after each pair of 2
Between each pair, you may sit briefly and make dua or dhikr, then begin the next pair.
Step 5: Choose how many rakats
Start with 2 rakats. Once that is consistent for a few weeks, add 2 more. The Prophet prayed 2, 4, 6, 8, and 12 at various times. The hadith specifically mention that he was seen praying 8 rakats of duha after returning from a journey (Bukhari 1103).
For building a habit: 2 rakats, done consistently every weekday, is worth more than 8 rakats prayed twice a month.
Step 6: Make dua afterward
After saluting to end the prayer, sit briefly and make personal dua. This is the moment when you have just given the charity of your joints — you are in a state of freshness and acceptance. Ask for your day, your family, your provision, your goals.
Making Duha Stick — The Habit Science
The single biggest reason duha does not become a consistent habit is timing. People intend to pray it "sometime in the morning" — which means whenever they remember, which means often not at all.
Specific beats vague every time. Do not decide to pray duha "in the morning." Decide: "I will pray duha at 8:45 AM, immediately after my morning tea." That specific time and trigger is what makes it automatic.
Attach it to Fajr's aftermath. The most successful duha practitioners do not treat it as a separate event — they treat it as the final chapter of the Fajr morning. Fajr → adhkar → Quran → duha. One morning block, not four separate commitments.
On busy or traveling days: 2 rakats minimum. The nafs will tell you that if you cannot do your "full" duha, you might as well skip. Resist this. Two rakats takes 3 minutes. You always have 3 minutes.

Common Mistakes People Make With Duha
Praying it too early. Praying duha immediately after Fajr (before the sun has fully risen) is in the disliked time. Wait at least 15-20 minutes after sunrise. Some people set a specific alarm for this.
Treating it as all-or-nothing. "If I cannot pray 8 rakats, I will not pray at all." This is the nafs pushing you toward perfectionism that results in nothing. 2 rakats is complete.
Neglecting the dua component. The prayer itself is the vessel, but the dua that follows is the conversation. Do not rush out immediately after salam. Sit for 1-2 minutes and speak to Allah about your day.
Letting weekends break the habit. Schedule flexibility on weekends is good. But if your duha only happens on weekdays when "there is a routine," it will collapse whenever the routine changes. Build it into both work and rest days.
Common Questions
Can I pray duha immediately after Fajr? Not immediately — wait until the sun has risen and 15-20 minutes have passed. The time from Fajr until the sun rises is a restricted prayer time. Once that window closes, duha time begins.
Is there a specific dua for duha prayer? There is a well-known dua attributed to the Prophet for the duha prayer:
"O Allah, the duha (forenoon) is Yours, and the beauty is Yours, and the magnificence is Yours, and the power is Yours, and the protection is Yours. O Allah, if my provision is in the heavens, bring it down. If it is in the earth, extract it. If it is difficult, make it easy. If it is haram, make it halal. And if it is far, bring it near — by the truth of your duha, your magnificence, your beauty, your power, and Your protection."
This dua, while reported in some books of du'as, has varying opinions about its chain of transmission. It is widely circulated and used by Muslims around the world after duha prayer.
Does duha prayer replace Tahajjud? No — they are distinct prayers with different times and different spiritual functions. Tahajjud is the night prayer of intimacy; duha is the morning prayer of gratitude and charity. Ideally, build both. Start with whichever is more accessible for your schedule, then add the other.
What is the best surah to recite in duha? The Prophet reportedly recited Surah Ad-Duha (93) in duha prayer — fittingly, since the surah is named after this time of day and begins with an oath by it. Surah Ash-Shams (91) is also reported. Both are short and highly meaningful for the morning context. See dhikr after salah for what to say after completing duha.
Closing — Start Today, Two Rakats
The Prophet said two rakats of duha are charity for every joint in your body. Three hundred and sixty acts of giving, completed in 3 minutes.
You do not need perfect conditions. You do not need to pray 8 rakats. You need to stand up, this morning, some time after sunrise, and pray 2 rakats with presence and sincerity.
That is duha. That is the charity. That is the habit.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many rakats is duha prayer?
Duha prayer is a minimum of 2 rakats with no fixed maximum. The Prophet prayed 2, 4, 6, 8, and up to 12 rakats at various times. Most scholars recommend 2-8 rakats. Starting with 2 is perfectly valid and complete.
When is the time for duha prayer?
Duha prayer begins 15-20 minutes after sunrise (when the sun has risen a spear's length) and ends when the sun passes its zenith (the beginning of Dhuhr time). The best time is when the sun is high and the heat begins — roughly mid-morning.
Is duha prayer sunnah or nafl?
Duha is classified as sunnah by many scholars, with some considering it sunnah muakkadah. Abu Hurairah narrated that the Prophet never advised him to leave it, saying he advised him of three things including praying two rakats of duha. It is strongly recommended.
What do I recite in duha prayer?
There is no specifically required recitation. Recite Al-Fatiha and any surah in each rakat. The Prophet reportedly recited Al-Shams (91) and Ad-Duha (93) in duha — both are fitting thematically. Any Quran recitation is valid.
Can I pray duha during work hours?
Yes. Duha prayer takes 3-5 minutes for 2 rakats. It fits easily within a lunch break or a brief pause at work. If praying in public, a private corner or prayer room is ideal. The reward is not diminished by praying at work.
