The Prophet ﷺ described Friday with an intensity that makes you realise there is something happening on this day that most of us have no idea about. This guide is about what that is — and how to actually use this day.

What the Prophet ﷺ Said About Friday

خَيْرُ يَوْمٍ طَلَعَتْ عَلَيْهِ الشَّمْسُ يَوْمُ الْجُمُعَةِ فِيهِ خُلِقَ آدَمُ وَفِيهِ أُدْخِلَ الْجَنَّةَ وَفِيهِ أُخْرِجَ مِنْهَا وَلَا تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ إِلَّا فِي يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ

"The best day on which the sun rises is Friday. On it Adam was created, on it he entered Paradise, and on it he was expelled from it. And the Hour will not come except on Friday." — (Sahih Muslim 854)

That is an extraordinary statement. The creation of the first human, his entering Paradise, his departure from it, and the ultimate end of this world — all on a Friday. This day carries cosmic significance in Islamic understanding, not just weekly religious routine.

The Prophet ﷺ also said:

إِنَّ مِنْ أَفْضَلِ أَيَّامِكُمْ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ فَأَكْثِرُوا عَلَيَّ مِنَ الصَّلَاةِ فِيهِ

"Indeed, one of the best of your days is Friday, so increase your salawat upon me on that day." — (Sunan Abu Dawud 1047)

Why Modern Muslims Underuse This Day

The honest reality: for many Muslims, Friday has become just Jummah prayer plus the rest of the day as usual. Maybe dinner is better because it is the weekend. Maybe you notice a special feeling in the masjid.

But the depth of what this day offers — the answered dua, the specific acts of worship, the spiritual windows — gets lost in routine.

The nafs wants every day to feel the same because sameness requires no extra effort. Taking Friday seriously requires intentionality. You have to plan for it. You have to remember what it is before you arrive at it.

The Virtues of Friday — What Makes It Different

1. A guaranteed hour of answered dua

فِي يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ سَاعَةٌ لَا يُوَافِقُهَا عَبْدٌ مُسْلِمٌ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ يُصَلِّي يَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ شَيْئًا إِلَّا أَعْطَاهُ إِيَّاهُ

"There is an hour on Friday in which no Muslim stands and prays, asking Allah for something, except that Allah gives it to him." — (Sahih al-Bukhari 935)

Scholars debate the exact time. The two strongest positions:

• The last hour before Maghrib (sitting in quiet dua and dhikr from Asr onwards)
• The time between the imam ascending the pulpit and the end of Jummah prayer

To catch it, make extended dua in both windows.

2. Jummah prayer — the weekly gathering

The Friday prayer is obligatory for free, adult, resident Muslim males. The Quran commands:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا نُودِيَ لِلصَّلَاةِ مِن يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَاسْعَوْا إِلَى ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ

"O you who believe, when the call to prayer is made on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah." — (Surah Al-Jumu'ah, 62:9)

3. Surah Al-Kahf

The Prophet ﷺ described a light that spreads from the reciter of Surah Al-Kahf "from one Friday to the next." Many scholars interpret this as a shield of spiritual light and guidance that lasts the week.

The ideal time is Friday morning after Fajr, though reciting it any time on Friday (including Friday night, which begins at Maghrib on Thursday) earns the reward.

4. Abundant salawat on the Prophet ﷺ

The Prophet ﷺ specifically commanded increased salawat on Fridays:

أَكْثِرُوا الصَّلَاةَ عَلَيَّ فِي يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ وَلَيْلَةِ الْجُمُعَةِ

"Increase your salawat upon me on Friday and the night of Friday." — (Sunan al-Bayhaqi)

When Friday becomes intentional rather than routine, you will notice:

• Your week starts feeling different — you begin to plan your week around Friday rather than treating it as the last day
• The hour before Maghrib on Fridays becomes a quiet, focused dua session
• You feel the difference in khushu during Jummah when you arrive early versus rushed

Common Questions

Can I pray Dhuhr instead of Jummah if I miss it? Yes — if you miss Jummah (due to illness, travel, or a valid excuse), you pray Dhuhr in its place. The Jummah prayer is a substitute for Dhuhr, not an additional prayer. For those who are not obligated (women, travellers, the ill), Dhuhr is prayed normally.

When does Friday start Islamically? The Islamic day begins at sunset. So "Friday" in Islamic reckoning begins at Maghrib on Thursday evening. This means the Friday night (Laylat al-Jumu'ah) is actually the night between Thursday and Friday — and the special virtues extend to that night too.

Is there anything I should avoid on Fridays? The Prophet ﷺ specifically prohibited singling out Friday for voluntary fasting unless fasting the day before or after as well. Beyond that, there are no specific additional prohibitions. Focus on what is recommended rather than restrictions.

Does Jummah prayer count as Dhuhr in terms of rakats? Jummah prayer is two rakats (shorter than Dhuhr's four). It replaces Dhuhr but is not the same form. After Jummah, it is sunnah to pray four rakats, and some scholars recommend two. This is the post-Jummah sunnah that many people skip.

What is the specific dua for Jummah? The dua for Jummah includes specific supplications from the hadith. Making dua after Jummah, particularly before Maghrib, is especially recommended.

Closing — Make Friday Your Day
