When You Have a Need and Do Not Know Where to Turn
There are moments in life when the pressure builds โ a job interview coming up, a marriage decision you cannot resolve, a health crisis with no clear answer, a financial situation that feels impossible. In those moments, most people reach for the phone, call a friend, scroll for advice.
The Muslim tradition offers something different: turn to Allah first, with specific prayers and surahs, through a dedicated prayer called Salat ul-Hajat.
This guide explains which surahs to recite when you have a need (hajat), how the prayer of need is performed, and how to build the habit of going to Allah before you go anywhere else.
What Is Salat ul-Hajat?
Salat ul-Hajat (ุตูููุงุฉู ุงููุญูุงุฌูุฉ) literally means "the prayer of need." It is a two-rakat prayer that the Prophet ๏ทบ taught as a direct channel to Allah when you have an urgent or important request.
The Prophet ๏ทบ said:
"Whoever has a need with Allah, or with one of the children of Adam, let him make wudu, pray two rakats, then praise Allah and send salawat on the Prophet, then say..." โ (Sunan at-Tirmidhi 479)
This is not a complicated ritual. It is an intentional turning toward Allah with your specific need โ acknowledging that He is the One who ultimately fulfils all requests.
Which Surahs Are Recommended?
There is no single "surah for hajat" prescribed in an authentic hadith. However, scholars and practitioners recommend certain surahs based on their themes of trust, need, and divine provision:
Surah Al-Fatiha (The Opening)
The opening surah of the Quran is the master supplication. Every rakat of salah contains it, and it contains the line that matters most when you have a need:
ุฅููููุงูู ููุนูุจูุฏู ููุฅููููุงูู ููุณูุชูุนูููู
"You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help." โ (Surah Al-Fatiha, 1:5)
Recite it slowly. Let those words land before moving on.
Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas (The Three Quls)
These three surahs together are described as covering "everything." The Prophet ๏ทบ recited them morning and evening and recommended them at times of need and worry. They reaffirm Allah's absolute unity, seek refuge from all external harm, and seek protection from internal harm (waswas). See the benefits of reading the three Quls for a deeper dive.
Surah Al-Waqiah (for provision and rizq)
Ibn Masud reported that the Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Whoever recites Surah Al-Waqiah every night, poverty will never touch him." (Ibn Hibban). If your hajat involves financial difficulty, this surah is specifically recommended.
Ayat ul-Kursi (for strength and protection)
"Allah โ there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence." โ (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:255)
Reciting Ayat ul-Kursi after salah and before dua elevates your supplication. It is a declaration of Allah's might before you present your small need to Him.
How to Pray Salat ul-Hajat โ Step by Step
- Make wudu โ enter the prayer in a state of purity
- Set your niyyah: "I am praying two rakats of Salat ul-Hajat"
- Pray two rakats โ in the first rakat recite Surah Al-Fatiha and then any surah you know (Al-Ikhlas is a natural choice). Same for the second rakat.
- After the prayer, praise Allah โ say Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar
- Send salawat on the Prophet ๏ทบ โ recite Durood Ibrahim
- Recite the dua of Salat ul-Hajat:
"There is no god but Allah, the Forbearing, the Generous. Glory be to Allah, Lord of the Mighty Throne. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. O Allah, I ask You for the causes of Your mercy, the determination of Your forgiveness, the acquisition of every good, and safety from every sin." โ (Sunan at-Tirmidhi 479)
- Then make your specific dua โ in Arabic or your own language, presenting your need clearly to Allah

How to Make This a Habit (Not Just a One-Time Panic Prayer)
The mistake many people make is praying Salat ul-Hajat only when things are desperate. But the connection you want to have with Allah in a crisis is built during the ordinary days.
Here is how to build the habit:
- Every Sunday or Monday morning, pray two rakats of Salat ul-Hajat for your needs that week. This conditions you to bring concerns to Allah before they become emergencies.
- Before any important meeting, exam, or decision, take ten minutes to pray it. Attach it to preparation.
- Add it to your post-Isha routine once or twice a week. The late night is a time of special closeness to Allah.
- Write down your hajat before you pray. Being specific in your dua is a sign that you are serious โ and it helps you track how Allah is answering.

The Real Surah You Need: Tawakkul
You can recite every recommended surah perfectly and still miss the point if there is no tawakkul โ genuine trust that Allah will provide the best outcome.
The surah of hajat is not a magic code. It is an act of worship that requires a heart that genuinely believes:
ููู ูู ููุชูููููููู ุนูููู ุงูููููู ูููููู ุญูุณูุจููู
"Whoever relies upon Allah โ then He is sufficient for him." โ (Surah At-Talaq, 65:3)
When you pray Salat ul-Hajat and then remain attached to a specific outcome ("Allah must answer me this way or it means He does not care"), you have not fully trusted. Real tawakkul is doing everything in your capacity, then releasing the result.
Common Questions
Can women pray Salat ul-Hajat during menstruation? No โ salah is not valid during menstruation. However, you can still make dua at any time, recite the recommended surahs silently in your heart, and do dhikr. The connection to Allah is not cut during this time; only the formal prayer is suspended.
How long should I keep praying Salat ul-Hajat for one need? There is no set limit. Continue as long as the need exists. Do not put a deadline on Allah. Some needs are answered quickly; others require sustained asking. The Prophet ๏ทบ is described as persistent in dua โ adopt that quality.
Does Salat ul-Hajat replace dua alone? No โ it includes dua as a step. You can also make pure dua (without the prior prayer) at any time. Salat ul-Hajat is a specific, more structured way of approaching Allah for a need.
Can I pray Salat ul-Hajat for someone else's need? Yes. Praying for others is a noble act, and dua made for another in their absence is one of the most likely to be accepted. The Prophet ๏ทบ said the angel says "ameen" to the dua of the one who prays for their absent brother. See dua for salat ul hajat for the supplication text.
What if I do not know Arabic โ can I pray Salat ul-Hajat in English? The formal prayer must be in Arabic (the same way all salah is performed). But your personal dua after the prayer can be in any language. Make the Arabic surahs part of your learning; meanwhile, pour your heart out to Allah in your own words after the prayer.
Closing
Every need you carry โ the ones you share with people and the ones too private to say out loud โ Allah already knows. Salat ul-Hajat is not a way of informing Him. It is a way of acknowledging that He is the only One who can actually fulfil it, and that you are choosing to ask Him before you ask anyone else.
That shift in orientation โ turning to Allah first โ is itself a form of worship. Build it as a habit, and you will find that you face fewer crises alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a specific surah for fulfilling a need (hajat)?
There is no single 'surah for hajat' in the Quran. However, scholars recommend Surah Al-Fatiha (as the opener of all duas), Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq, and Surah An-Nas. More importantly, the Prophet ๏ทบ taught a two-rakat prayer called Salat ul-Hajat specifically for when you have an urgent need โ read within it whatever surahs you know, then make your dua.
How do you pray Salat ul-Hajat?
Perform wudu, pray two rakats with full attention and khushu, then send salawat on the Prophet ๏ทบ. After finishing the prayer, recite the specific dua of Salat ul-Hajat: 'La ilaha illallahul-halimul-kareem, subhanallahi rabbil-arshil-adheem...' Then present your need to Allah in your own words. There is no fixed surah required โ pray any surahs you know with presence of heart.
How many times should I read a surah for my hajat?
The Quran does not specify repetition counts for fulfilling needs. What scholars emphasise is sincerity, consistency, and tawakkul โ trusting Allah's wisdom. Rather than focusing on numbers, focus on the quality of your dua and your internal state. Combine recitation with Salat ul-Hajat and sadaqah for maximum effect.
Why is my dua for a need not being answered?
Allah always hears dua. The response comes in one of three ways: He grants exactly what you asked, He replaces it with something better, or He stores reward for you in the akhirah. Scholars also identify factors that block dua: haram income, neglecting salah, or hasty impatience. Purify your earnings, maintain your prayers, and trust Allah's timing.
Can I read Surah Waqiah for worldly needs?
Yes โ Surah Al-Waqiah is specifically narrated as a surah for rizq (provision). Ibn Masud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet ๏ทบ said: 'Whoever recites Surah Al-Waqiah every night, poverty will never touch him.' (Ibn Hibbaan). Reading it regularly when you have financial needs is a recommended practice.
