How Many Times to Say Durood on Friday

Friday arrives every week, and with it comes a question many Muslims quietly wonder about: is there a specific number of times you are supposed to send durood — blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ — on this blessed day? You may have heard 80, 100, 300, or even 1000 mentioned by different people.

The honest answer from the authentic sources is both simpler and more liberating than any specific count.

What the Prophet ﷺ Actually Said

The core hadith on durood on Fridays comes in several wordings. One of the most authentic is:

أَكْثِرُوا الصَّلَاةَ عَلَيَّ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ فَإِنَّهُ مَنْ صَلَّى عَلَيَّ صَلَاةً صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ عَشْرًا

Akthiru al-salata 'alayya yawma al-jumu'ah, fa innahu man salla 'alayya salatan salla Allahu 'alayhi 'ashran

"Increase your sending of blessings upon me on Fridays, for whoever sends one blessing upon me, Allah will send ten blessings upon him." — (Sunan al-Nasa'i 1374)

The word akthiru — "increase" or "send abundantly" — is the key. The Prophet ﷺ did not say "send it 80 times" or "100 times" or any fixed number. He said: more. Send more than you normally do. Friday is the day to increase.

Another narration adds:

"The best of your days is Friday... so send abundant blessings upon me on that day, for your blessings are presented to me." — (Sunan Abi Dawud 1047)

Your durood reaches him ﷺ. This is the reality behind the practice.

Why Friday Is the Day for Durood

Friday holds a rank above all other days of the week in Islam. The Prophet ﷺ described it as the "sayyid al-ayyam" — the master of days. On it, Adam was created, the Day of Judgment will occur, and during it there is a hidden hour of acceptance of duas. Durood on Friday sits at the intersection of three realities:

1. The Prophet ﷺ is the intermediary — love for him is a condition of iman, and durood expresses that love actively.
2. Your blessings reach him — this is not symbolic. The Prophet ﷺ himself said they are presented to him.
3. Allah multiplies the reward — one durood becomes ten blessings from Allah upon you.

About the Number 80

You may have heard that sending durood 80 times on Friday wipes out 80 years of sins. This narration exists but its chain is assessed as weak by hadith scholars. It should not be taken as a reliable target to hit.

What this means practically: do not stress about reaching 80. The goal is not a counter — it is a state of heart. A person who says durood 80 times while their mind wanders, just ticking a box, has extracted less benefit than someone who says it 20 times with full presence and love for the Prophet ﷺ.

What the Scholars Recommend

Because there is no fixed number, scholars have given general guidance:

• Ibn Qayyim and others recommend dedicating a significant portion of Friday to durood — at least 100 to 300 times throughout the day, spread across different moments.
• Some scholars recommend setting a personal target — 100 after Fajr, for example — as a consistent weekly practice rather than an irregular burst.
• The Permanent Committee of Saudi scholars consistently emphasizes: send durood as much as you can, without imposing a specific number as an obligation.

The shared message: be generous. Friday passes once a week. Its window closes.

How to Build the Durood Habit on Fridays

The gap between knowing you should say durood and actually doing it consistently is real. Here is how to close it:

Anchor it to your salah transitions. After each Friday prayer — especially Jumu'ah itself — spend five minutes in dedicated durood before standing up. You are already in a state of focus and wudu. Add durood there.

Set a morning intention. Before your Friday begins, make a quiet intention: "Today I will send abundant durood on the Prophet ﷺ." When you make this a conscious Friday ritual, it becomes part of your identity as a Muslim who honours the Prophet ﷺ.

Use the waiting periods. Commuting to Jumu'ah? Waiting for the imam to begin the khutbah? Sitting in traffic on Friday? These are prime durood moments. The tongue does not need your eyes or your hands.

Use the evening hour. The last hour before Maghrib on Friday is widely held to be the hidden hour of acceptance. Many scholars recommend concentrating durood — and dua — in this window specifically.

Track your consistency. The Prophet ﷺ said the deeds most beloved to Allah are those done consistently, even if small. A Friday where you send 100 sincere durood every week is worth more than a one-off burst of 1000 that you never repeat.

The Durood to Use

The Prophet ﷺ taught Durood Ibrahim — the same salawat in every salah — as the model when the Companions asked how to send blessings upon him:

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammadin kama sallayta 'ala Ibrahima wa 'ala ali Ibrahim, innaka Hamidun Majid

"O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are the Most Praiseworthy, the Most Glorious." — (Sahih Bukhari 3370)

Shorter forms are also authentic — Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad alone carries full reward. Do not let searching for the "perfect" form prevent you from starting.

Common Questions

Does durood need to be said out loud? No. You can recite it in your heart, under your breath, or aloud — all are valid. Silent recitation during work or commuting is entirely acceptable.

Does it matter which day of Friday counts — from Maghrib on Thursday? Yes. In the Islamic calendar, Friday begins at Maghrib on Thursday evening. Sending durood Thursday evening is equally counted as Friday durood.

What if I miss Friday and cannot send durood? Friday comes every week — you have not "lost" anything permanent. Begin again next Friday. Consistency over months matters more than perfection in any single week.
