In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

You finish the tasleem. You say Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullah to the right. Then to the left. Then โ most of the time โ you reach for your phone.
The prayer is done. But the window has not closed yet.
The Prophet ๏ทบ did not rush away from his prayer mat. He taught that the moments immediately after salah carry a specific practice โ dhikr that, done consistently, is one of the most weight-bearing acts a Muslim can perform for virtually no time investment.
The Dhikr After Salah
SubhanAllah โ "Glory be to Allah" โ 33 times
Alhamdulillah โ "All praise is for Allah" โ 33 times
Allahu Akbar โ "Allah is the greatest" โ 33 times
Then complete 100 with:
"There is no deity except Allah, alone, without partner. His is the dominion, His is all praise, and He has power over all things." โ 1 time
โ (Sahih Muslim 597)
Then recite Ayatul Kursi (Quran 2:255). The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Whoever recites Ayatul Kursi after every obligatory prayer, nothing stands between him and entering Paradise except death." (Nasai, authenticated by Al-Albani)
When: Immediately after the tasleem of each of the five daily prayers. The session takes two to three minutes.
The Story Behind It
Abu Hurairah ุฑุถู ุงููู ุนูู reported that some poor companions came to the Prophet and said the wealthy had taken the higher ranks by praying as they prayed, fasting as they fasted, but giving extra in charity and freeing slaves. The Prophet said: "Shall I not tell you something that, if you practice it, will surpass those who have gone ahead of you, and no one coming after you will reach your level?" He then taught this exact dhikr. (Sahih Muslim 595)
The companions who heard it began practicing it. Then some of the wealthy companions heard about it and began doing it too. The poor companions came back: "They have heard what we are doing." The Prophet smiled and said: "That is the grace of Allah which He gives to whoever He wills."
This dhikr is not the consolation prize for those who cannot give money. It is a spiritual heavyweight that the Prophet himself described as supremely valuable. The poor companions received it first because they were honest about what they needed.
How to Build This into Every Salah
The challenge with dhikr after salah is not the difficulty โ it is the departure. You finish the prayer, someone calls you, the phone lights up, a thought about your to-do list surfaces, and the intention to do dhikr evaporates.
Create a visual anchor. Keep prayer beads (misbaha) on your prayer mat. The physical act of picking them up immediately after tasleem creates a ritual boundary: this is still prayer time.
Lock your phone until the dhikr is done. The phone is the single biggest enemy of post-salah dhikr. Turn it face down before you start salah. Give yourself three minutes on the mat after the tasleem before touching it.
Learn the sequence until it is automatic. SubhanAllah 33, Alhamdulillah 33, Allahu Akbar 33, then the long tahlil once. Practice it five times outside of prayer until it flows without counting. When it is automatic, you do not need to think โ you just do it.
Track your post-salah dhikr separately. Most people track whether they prayed. Few track whether they did the dhikr after. Tracking the dhikr specifically creates a new layer of accountability and shows you where you are consistently skipping.
For Fajr and Maghrib: add the morning/evening adhkar. The post-salah dhikr described above applies to all five prayers. But Fajr and Maghrib have additional recommended adhkar from the Sunnah. The post-salah sequence is the universal minimum; the morning and evening adhkar build on top of it.

Related Dhikr and Duas
Dua the Prophet said after every salah:
ุงููููููู ูู ุฃูุนููููู ุนูููู ุฐูููุฑููู ููุดูููุฑููู ููุญูุณููู ุนูุจูุงุฏูุชููู
Allahumma a'inni ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatik
"O Allah, help me to remember You, to thank You, and to worship You well." โ (Abu Dawud 1522)
Say this before the 33/33/33 sequence or after โ both are narrated.
For Fajr and Maghrib specifically, add:
ุฃูุนููุฐู ุจูุงูููููู ู ููู ุงูุดููููุทูุงูู ุงูุฑููุฌููู ู (then Ayatul Kursi, then Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas โ 3x each)
This forms the core of the morning and evening adhkar.
The article on dua after salah covers the supplication you can add to the sequence, and how to do morning adhkar builds on the Fajr practice specifically. If you want to understand the broader dhikr framework, how to make dhikr a daily habit is the foundation.
Common Questions
What if I forget to do dhikr after salah? You missed it for that prayer. Do not try to make it up for past prayers โ just catch it in the next one. The Prophet did not teach catching up on dhikr the way we catch up on missed prayers. Start fresh with the next salah.
Can I do the dhikr on my fingers instead of prayer beads? Yes, and this is actually the narrated way. The Prophet said to count on the fingers of the right hand. Prayer beads are a later tool that many scholars permit for convenience. Both are valid.
Does the order (SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar) matter? This specific order is the most commonly narrated one. Stick to it as a default. There are also narrations with slightly different wording or counts โ all are valid, but consistency with one narration is easier to maintain.
What if I am in a rush and can only do part of it? Do what you can. Even saying SubhanAllah ten times while standing up from the prayer mat is better than nothing. The Prophet said: "The deeds most pleasing to Allah are those done regularly, even if small." (Sahih Bukhari 6464)
The Two Minutes That Stay With You
You will forget most of what happens in your day. The meeting, the argument, the scroll session โ gone by next week.
The dhikr you said after Fajr this morning is recorded. The one you say tonight after Isha will be too.
These two minutes, repeated five times a day, become one of the most consistent conversations you have with Allah. Not a rushed performance โ a real acknowledgment that He is greater (Allahu Akbar), worthy of all praise (Alhamdulillah), and completely beyond any flaw we could ever imagine (SubhanAllah).
Stay on the mat for three more minutes after the tasleem. The phone can wait.

Frequently Asked Questions
What dhikr should I say after salah?
The Prophet prescribed: 33 times SubhanAllah, 33 times Alhamdulillah, 33 times Allahu Akbar, then complete 100 with La ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu wa huwa ala kulli shay'in qadir. This rounds out to 100 and is reported in Sahih Muslim 597.
How long does dhikr after salah take?
About 2-3 minutes when done attentively. The 33/33/33+1 sequence takes roughly 90 seconds, and Ayatul Kursi takes under a minute. The entire post-salah practice with Ayatul Kursi can be done in under 3 minutes.
Is dhikr after salah obligatory or sunnah?
It is a confirmed sunnah (sunnah muakkadah) that the Prophet consistently performed and taught. It is not obligatory, meaning your prayer is valid without it, but leaving it regularly means missing one of the most rewarding two minutes available to a Muslim.
What is the reward for dhikr after salah?
The Prophet said that whoever says SubhanAllah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, and Allahu Akbar 33 times after salah, and completes the hundred with the tahlil, their sins are forgiven even if they were as much as the foam of the sea. (Sahih Muslim 597)
Should I say dhikr after salah out loud or quietly?
Both are narrated. Saying it quietly helps focus and avoids distracting others. Some scholars recommend saying it softly enough that you can hear yourself. The quality of presence matters more than volume.
