In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Hunger is one of the most honest human experiences. It is concrete, immediate, impossible to argue with. When a person is truly hungry, no philosophy helps. The need is real.
Prophet Isa ๏ทบ knew the people around him were hungry โ not only physically, but spiritually. His disciples, the Hawariyyun, had been following him through a ministry of miracles and challenges. They asked him a question that is, at its core, as honest as hunger itself: "Is your Lord able to send down a table spread with food from the heaven?" (Quran 5:112)
Isa did not rebuke them for asking. He turned their human need into a dua.
The Dua of Prophet Isa

Allahumma Rabbana anzil 'alayna ma'idatan minas-sama'i takunu lana 'idan li-awwalina wa-akhirina wa-ayatan minka, war-zuqna wa-anta khayru al-raziqin.
"O Allah, our Lord, send down to us a table spread from heaven to be for us a festival, for the first of us and the last of us, and a sign from You. And provide for us โ You are the best of providers." โ (Quran 5:114)
Three elements in this dua deserve careful attention:
The address: Allahumma Rabbana. Most quranic duas use either Allahumma (O Allah) or Rabbana (Our Lord) alone. Isa uses both together. Scholars note this as the highest form of addressing Allah in dua โ combining the personal name of the Divine with the relational title of Lord. When you need something deeply, come to Allah this way.
The purpose: 'idan li-awwalina wa-akhirina โ a festival for the first of us and the last of us. Isa is not just asking for food. He is asking for a provision that will bless not only those present but all believers who would come after them. He stretches the request across time. This is the spirit of prophetic generosity โ even in asking for yourself, think about how the blessing can extend to others.
The closing: wa-anta khayru al-raziqin โ You are the best of providers. Before accepting any answer, before knowing if the request would be granted, Isa affirms the attribute of Allah that makes the whole dua meaningful. He is not just making a request โ he is making a statement of faith. This ending is what separates a prayer from a demand.
The Story Behind It
Prophet Isa ๏ทบ is described in the Quran as Kalimat Allah โ the Word of Allah โ and Ruhun minhu โ a spirit from Him. (Quran 4:171). Born without a father, he spoke from the cradle, healed the blind and the lepers, and raised the dead by Allah's permission. His entire ministry was one of signs.
The disciples who traveled with him had witnessed these signs. Yet they asked their question in a way that sounds, on the surface, like doubt: "Can your Lord send down food from heaven?" The Quran records Isa's response as a gentle correction: "Fear Allah, if you should be believers." (Quran 5:112). Then they clarified โ they did not doubt Allah's power, they wanted to see it and to eat from its blessing so their hearts would be further at rest.
Isa understood their human need and interceded. He turned to Allah with a dua that was simultaneously a request for provision, a request for a community sign, and an act of praise.
Allah's response: I will send it down. Then the warning: whoever disbelieves after this sign โ their punishment will be unlike any before.
The table descended. A sign, a provision, a mercy โ and a test.
How to Make Isa's Dua Part of Your Dua for Provision
The dua of Isa is one of the most complete models for seeking rizq โ provision โ from Allah. Here is how to make it your own:
Use the opening address for your most important duas. Allahumma Rabbana โ try saying this combination at the beginning of your most earnest supplications. You are simultaneously invoking the personal name of Allah and claiming your relationship with Him as your Lord. It changes the weight of what follows.
Extend your provision dua beyond yourself. Isa asked for a blessing "for the first of us and the last of us." When you make dua for rizq, include your family, your community, and the Muslim ummah. The dua for rizq provides the comprehensive prophetic supplications for provision โ pair these with the expansive spirit of Isa's request.
End every dua for provision with the affirmation. Wa-anta khayru al-raziqin โ and You are the best of providers. Before you close your hands from dua, say this. Not because Allah needs to hear it, but because your heart needs to mean it. The affirmation is an act of trust that prepares you to receive whatever Allah sends โ whether it is exactly what you asked for or something better.
Connect provision with purpose. Isa did not ask just for food โ he asked for a sign and a festival that would mean something. Think about the provision you are asking for: what is it for? Who will it benefit? Bring that intention into your dua. Provision asked for with a clear purpose of service and goodness carries a different weight.

Dua of Prophet Ibrahim: Ibrahim ๏ทบ made one of the most famous duas for provision and community: asking Allah to bless Makkah and provide its people with fruits and sustenance. The dua of Prophet Ibrahim shows the same expansive spirit as Isa's dua โ provision asked for with the whole community in mind.
Dua for barakah: Beyond provision itself, the dua for barakah asks Allah to bless what He has already given โ so that what you receive is not just sufficient but overflowing with divine goodness.
Common Questions
Is Prophet Isa in Islam the same as Jesus in Christianity?
Yes and no. Muslims believe in and deeply revere Prophet Isa ๏ทบ โ that he was born miraculously to Maryam, performed miracles, and delivered the Injeel (Gospel). However, Islam does not hold that he is divine or that he died on the cross for sins. In Islam, Isa is a human prophet, one of the greatest, and he will return before the Day of Judgment. His duas in the Quran are the words of a human servant of Allah, not a divine being.
Can I say this dua for physical food, or only metaphorically?
Both. The table spread was literal food, and Isa asked for literal provision. Seeking sustenance from Allah is entirely appropriate and encouraged. The Quran describes earning a living and feeding your family as an act of worship when done with proper intention. Ask Allah specifically for what you need โ income, food, housing โ not only for abstract spiritual provision.
What does it mean that Allah is the "best of providers"?
Khayru al-raziqin acknowledges that while humans can provide for each other โ employers pay salaries, parents feed children โ Allah is the ultimate source behind all provision. A paycheck is a mechanism; the provision itself comes from Allah. Saying this closing phrase realigns your dependence toward its actual source, which reduces anxiety about the mechanisms and increases trust in the Source.
Closing
Isa ๏ทบ turned a request for food into a theological act โ a dua that covered provision, community, and a sign of divine presence all at once.
He ended with the most important phrase: wa-anta khayru al-raziqin. You are the best of providers.
Whatever you are asking for, whatever table you need spread in your life โ say this closing. Mean it. And trust the One who descended a table from the heavens for a group of hungry believers somewhere in ancient Palestine.
He is the same Provider today.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the dua of Prophet Isa in the Quran?
The most complete dua of Prophet Isa recorded in the Quran is: Allahumma Rabbana anzil 'alayna ma'idatan mina al-sama'i takunu lana 'idan li-awwalina wa-akhirina wa-ayatan minka war-zuqna wa-anta khayru al-raziqin โ O Allah, our Lord, send down to us a table spread from heaven to be for us a festival, for the first of us and the last of us, and a sign from You. And provide for us โ You are the best of providers. (Quran 5:114)
Why did Isa's disciples ask for a table spread from heaven?
The Hawariyyun (disciples) of Prophet Isa asked for the table spread as a sign to confirm their faith and to be a source of sustenance. Isa turned their request into a dua โ not just for food, but for a sign that would benefit not only those present but all believers who would come after them. He transformed a human request for provision into a theological act of trust in Allah as the ultimate Provider.
What happened after Isa made this dua?
Allah responded: 'I will send it down to you. But whoever of you disbelieves afterward โ then indeed will I punish him with a punishment by which I have not punished anyone among the worlds.' (Quran 5:115). The table descended as a mercy for the believers and a final proof for those who still doubted. It became one of the miracles of Prophet Isa's mission.
What does Isa's dua teach about how to make dua for provision?
Isa's dua contains three elements for effective dua for provision: first, he addressed Allah with the most intimate form โ Allahumma Rabbana (O Allah, our Lord) โ establishing the relationship before the request. Second, he articulated the purpose: not just personal provision but a sign and celebration for the whole community. Third, he ended with acknowledgment: wa-anta khayru al-raziqin โ You are the best of providers โ affirming Allah's attribute before accepting the answer. This is a template for any dua for rizq.
Is there a dua from the Sunnah that complements the dua of Isa?
Yes. The Prophet taught: Allahumma inni as'aluka rizqan halalan tayyiban โ O Allah, I ask You for provision that is halal and pure. This is recorded in various collections. Combined with Isa's dua affirming Allah as the best of providers, these form a powerful pair: asking for provision and affirming faith in the One who gives it.
