In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Nine hundred and fifty years.
Imagine calling people to something good for nearly a millennium. Calling in public and in private. Calling with gentleness and with urgency. Promising them mercy if they returned and warning them of consequence if they did not. Going through generation after generation, watching the people you invited age, die, and be replaced by their children who were taught to mock you as their parents had.
This is the life of Nuh ๏ทบ โ called Noah in the Judeo-Christian tradition, acknowledged in Islam as one of the five greatest prophets, the Ulul 'Azm. His story is told across multiple Surahs of the Quran, including an entire chapter bearing his name. And what the Quran emphasizes, over and over, is not his miraculous ark. It is his character. His patience. His duas.
The Duas of Prophet Nuh
The comprehensive supplication Nuh made near the end of his mission encompasses everyone who ever crossed his threshold in faith:
ุฑููุจูู ุงุบูููุฑู ููู ููููููุงููุฏูููู ููููู ูู ุฏูุฎููู ุจูููุชููู ู ูุคูู ูููุง ููููููู ูุคูู ูููููู ููุงููู ูุคูู ูููุงุชู
Rabb-ighfir li wa-li-walidayya wa-li-man dakhala baytiya mu'minan wa-lil-mu'minina wal-mu'minat.
"My Lord, forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house as a believer and the believing men and believing women." โ (Quran 71:28)
Notice the order: himself first, then his parents, then his household, then all believers. The scholars note that Nuh begins with himself โ before asking forgiveness for others, he asks for his own. This is not selfishness. It is the recognition that a person who has not sought forgiveness for themselves is in no position to intercede for others.
When confronted with a mistake โ making dua for his son without divine authorization โ he immediately pivoted to this:
ุฑูุจูู ุฅููููู ุฃูุนููุฐู ุจููู ุฃููู ุฃูุณูุฃููููู ู ูุง ููููุณู ููู ุจููู ุนูููู ู ููุฅููููุง ุชูุบูููุฑู ููู ููุชูุฑูุญูู ูููู ุฃูููู ู ูููู ุงููุฎูุงุณูุฑูููู
Rabb inni a'udhu bika an as'alaka ma laysa li bihi 'ilm, wa-illa taghfir li wa-tarhamni akun minal-khasirin.
"My Lord, I seek refuge in You from asking that of which I have no knowledge. And unless You forgive me and have mercy on me, I will be among the losers." โ (Quran 11:47)
This is a dua of immediate accountability. Allah told him his son was not of his family in the way he meant โ and Nuh did not pause to process, to argue, or to feel sorry for himself. He acknowledged his overreach and turned back to Allah in the same breath.
The Story Behind These Duas
Nuh ๏ทบ spent nearly a thousand years in active da'wah โ calling his people to worship Allah alone and to abandon their idols. His methods were comprehensive:
He called publicly. He called privately. He called during the day and at night. He told them of Allah's mercy and His punishment. He pointed to the signs in creation โ the rain, the rivers, the crops, the sun and the moon. (Quran 71:5-18)
The response? "They put their fingers in their ears, covered themselves with their garments, persisted, and were arrogant with great arrogance." (Quran 71:7)
Nine centuries of this.
His most painful moment was his son. When the flood came and the ark sailed and his son refused to board โ choosing instead to climb a mountain, believing he could escape the water of Allah's decree โ Nuh called out to him one last time. The water took his son before his eyes.
And then Nuh made a dua for his son's salvation. Allah responded gently but firmly: his son was not of his family in the covenant sense โ because he had chosen disbelief. Nuh's love for his son was natural and righteous. But his dua had overstepped what Allah had already decreed.
Immediately: the dua of refuge and repentance.
This is the model. Not the perfection of never overstepping, but the practice of returning instantly when you realize you have.
How to Apply the Duas of Nuh in Your Life
For the long, unrewarded effort. Most people who work hard at something good โ building a family, supporting a struggling person, calling to better values in a resistant environment โ do not see results in their lifetime. Nuh is the patron prophet of this experience. His dua was not conditional on people listening. He kept calling. Use his example when your dua for consistency in worship feels hollow because nothing seems to be changing.
For self-correction when you overstep. Nuh's second dua โ "I seek refuge from asking that of which I have no knowledge" โ is specifically for moments when you realize you have asked for something that was not right to ask for. When you prayed for something that would have harmed you, when you made dua from a place of emotion rather than wisdom, say this immediately.
For interceding for others. Nuh's comprehensive dua โ for himself, his parents, his household, and all believers โ is a model for how to pray for the Muslim community. After praying for yourself, widen the circle. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "The supplication of a Muslim for his brother in his absence is answered." (Muslim 2732). Follow Nuh's order: yourself, then your family, then all believers.
For patience in the face of rejection. When your efforts at calling to good are mocked, ignored, or opposed โ as Nuh's were for nearly a millennium โ remind yourself of the dua for patience and of Nuh's example. The results of sincere effort are in Allah's hands. Your job is the effort and the dua.

Related Duas
Dua of Prophet Adam: Like Nuh, Adam's first act after falling was to turn back to Allah immediately. The dua of Prophet Adam shares the same pattern of instant repentance that Nuh demonstrated when he overstepped.
Dua for the ummah: Nuh prayed for all believers. The dua for the ummah continues that prophetic tradition โ praying for the entire Muslim community, not just yourself.
Dua for steadfastness: 950 years requires thabat โ firmness of heart. The dua for steadfastness covers the supplications for remaining firm when the road is long and the results are not visible.
Common Questions
If Nuh prayed against disbelievers, can I do the same?
Nuh's prayer against his people came only after 950 years of exhausting every option and receiving divine confirmation that no more would believe. The general Islamic guidance is to pray for guidance for people, not against them โ and the Prophet ๏ทบ consistently chose this even when severely persecuted. Praying against people is a last resort, not a first response.
How do I stay motivated when I call people to good and they do not respond?
Remember that Nuh's job was to call and warn โ not to make them believe. The Quran says clearly: "You do not guide whom you love, but Allah guides whom He wills." (Quran 28:56). Your responsibility is the call, the consistency, and the dua. The results are not your burden. This separation of responsibility from outcome is one of the most liberating things Islam teaches.
What happened to Nuh after the flood?
He and the believers survived, the ark rested on Mount Judi, and Allah said: "Descend in peace from Us and blessings upon you and upon nations from those with you." (Quran 11:48). Nuh lived to see the earth repopulated, to see the believers establish themselves. The ending of a long story of patience was peace and divine blessing.
Closing
Nuh ๏ทบ could have given up after fifty years. After a hundred. After two hundred. Instead he called for nearly a thousand, and when he overstepped even once, he corrected himself immediately.
His duas teach two things that together form the complete picture of Islamic spiritual practice: the endurance to keep going, and the humility to turn back when you drift.
Whatever your long effort is โ whatever you have been calling toward, working toward, making dua about for years with no visible result โ Nuh's story is for you. The ark was built one plank at a time. Keep your hands on the wood.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the main dua of Prophet Nuh?
Rabb-ighfir li wa-li-walidayya wa-li-man dakhala baytiya mu'minan wa-lil-mu'minina wal-mu'minat โ My Lord, forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house as a believer and the believing men and believing women. (Quran 71:28). This was Nuh's comprehensive supplication at the end of his mission, covering himself, his family, and all believers.
How long did Prophet Nuh call his people?
The Quran states Nuh called his people for 950 years โ 'And We certainly sent Nuh to his people, and he remained among them a thousand years minus fifty years.' (Quran 29:14). After all that time, only a small group believed. His story is the ultimate example that the results of sincere effort belong to Allah, not to us โ and that we should never stop calling to good.
What happened when Nuh prayed for his son?
Nuh made a dua for his son to be saved from the flood, saying 'My Lord, indeed my son is of my family.' Allah responded that Nuh's son was not of his family in the way that mattered โ because his deeds separated him from the community of faith. (Quran 11:45-47). Nuh immediately repented for asking something without knowledge, saying: 'My Lord, I seek refuge in You from asking that of which I have no knowledge.' This shows that prophets repent instantly when they overstep.
Why did Nuh also pray against the disbelievers?
After 950 years of patient invitation that was repeatedly mocked, rejected, and opposed, Nuh was told by Allah that no more of his people would believe. (Quran 11:36). Only then โ with divine confirmation that his mission was complete โ did he make dua against those who had actively worked to prevent others from believing. His patience is the model; his prayer against them was the exception after exhausting every option.
What lessons does the dua of Nuh teach about repentance?
Nuh's response when Allah told him his son was not of his family is one of the most instructive moments in the Quran. He did not argue, did not try to justify his dua, did not say 'but he's my son.' He immediately said: 'I seek refuge in You from asking that of which I have no knowledge, and if You do not forgive me and have mercy on me, I will be among the losers.' He applied Adam's dua โ total ownership, total dependence โ instantly.
