What to say before eating in Islam — Bismillah and the Sunnah of eating

You eat three times a day. Maybe more. That is over a thousand meals a year — a thousand moments to either invite Allah's blessing into your sustenance or let them pass unmarked.

Saying Bismillah before eating is not a small thing wrapped in a small package. It is a micro-habit with enormous consequences — and the Prophet ﷺ made it one of the clearest, most specific Sunnahs of daily life.

Here is everything you need to know: what to say, what to do if you forget, what happens when you do not say it, and how to make it so consistent it becomes as automatic as picking up a fork.

What the Sunnah Says — The Exact Words

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Mention the name of Allah, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is nearest to you." — (Bukhari 5376, sunnah.com)

The minimum is simply "Bismillah" — بِسْمِ اللهِ (Bismillah — In the name of Allah).

The fuller recommended form:

بِسْمِ اللهِ وَعَلَى بَرَكَةِ اللهِ

Bismillahi wa ala barakatillah

"In the name of Allah and upon the blessings of Allah."

This is the dua that the Prophet prescribed for the beginning of every meal. It is not a long supplication. It is seven words. And yet it transforms the act of eating from biological necessity into conscious worship.

What Happens When You Forget

This is the dua most people do not know — and it is one of the most practical gifts of the Sunnah:

بِسْمِ اللهِ فِي أَوَّلِهِ وَآخِرِهِ

Bismillahi fi awwalihi wa akhirihi

"In the name of Allah at its beginning and its end."

The Prophet ﷺ said: "If one of you forgets to mention the name of Allah at the beginning of his meal, he should say: 'Bismillahi fi awwalihi wa akhirihi.'" — (Abu Dawud 3767, sunnah.com)

The Sunnah does not leave you with guilt when you forget. It gives you a way back in, mid-meal. Say it when you remember, and the blessing is restored.

The Story Behind It — Why This Matters

The Prophet ﷺ explained what happens when Bismillah is said — and what happens when it is not:

"Shaytan considers food halal when the name of Allah is not mentioned over it. He comes with him and eats with him. And when a person says Bismillah at the beginning and remembers at the end, Shaytan vomits out what he had eaten." — (Abu Dawud 3768)

This hadith is not metaphor. The Islamic understanding is that Shaytan literally participates in a meal that begins without the name of Allah. Saying Bismillah is a barrier. Not saying it is an opening.

For the person trying to build a spiritually conscious life — keeping their home, their food, and their daily acts within the remembrance of Allah — this is foundational. See sunnah of eating for the full prophetic practice around meals.

How to Make Bismillah Before Eating a Daily Habit

Here is the honest truth: most Muslims know they should say Bismillah. The problem is that by the time you sit down to eat, you are hungry and distracted and the food is right there and you have already taken a bite.

Habit science says: attach a new habit to an existing trigger. The trigger for Bismillah is the moment your hand reaches for food.

Practical methods that work:

1. Link it to picking up your utensil. Your hand reaches for the fork or spoon — that physical action is your trigger. Before the fork touches the food, Bismillah.

2. Before sitting down to eat. Some people find it easier to say Bismillah while walking to the table, while serving their plate, or while washing their hands before the meal.

3. Say it aloud with family. When eating with others, saying "Bismillah" aloud before the first bite reminds everyone. Children who grow up hearing Bismillah consistently will develop the habit automatically.

4. For work lunches and public eating: A quiet Bismillah is perfectly valid. You do not need to announce it. A moment of pause before the first bite, the word said under your breath — that is complete.

The before-meal practice is incomplete without the after-meal dua. The Prophet ﷺ taught:

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنَا وَسَقَانَا وَجَعَلَنَا مُسْلِمِينَ

Alhamdulillahil-ladhi at'amana wa saqana wa ja'alana Muslimin

"Praise be to Allah who fed us, gave us drink, and made us Muslims."

— (Abu Dawud 3850, sunnah.com)

Some scholars add from another narration:

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ حَمْدًا كَثِيرًا طَيِّبًا مُبَارَكًا فِيهِ غَيْرَ مَكْفِيٍّ وَلَا مُوَدَّعٍ وَلَا مُسْتَغْنًى عَنْهُ رَبَّنَا

"Praise be to Allah, much, good, and blessed — not left behind, nor abandoned, nor dispensed with — our Lord."

— (Bukhari 5459)

Before and after: that is the complete meal. Three seconds to begin, five seconds to close. These are among the most accessible Sunnah practices available — no special knowledge required, no time commitment, just presence of mind.

Common Questions

Is there a specific hand to hold food with? Yes — the Prophet instructed eating with the right hand. He said: "Eat with your right hand, for Shaytan eats with his left hand." (Muslim 2020) This extends to drinking as well. The right hand is for eating and drinking; the left for removing impurities.

What about when eating food that is not halal by mistake — does Bismillah make it halal? No. Bismillah does not change the ruling on the food itself. Bismillah is about inviting Allah's blessing into a permissible meal. It does not transform haram food into halal. The obligation is to verify that food is halal before eating it.

Can children say Bismillah before they are old enough to understand? Yes — teaching children to say Bismillah before eating is one of the first Islamic habits to build. The Prophet said to children: "Say Bismillah, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is nearest to you." (Bukhari 5376) Teaching the words before the understanding is how the understanding develops.

What about eating with non-Muslims who do not say Bismillah? You say your own Bismillah before eating. You are not responsible for what others say or do not say over their food. If the host is Muslim and has forgotten, a gentle reminder is encouraged. Otherwise, focus on your own practice.

Closing — Three Meals, Three Moments, Thirty Years

You will eat thousands of meals in your lifetime. The Bismillah before each one is a small act. The accumulated effect of thirty years of beginning every meal with the name of Allah — that is not small.

It shapes how you relate to sustenance. It builds gratitude. It keeps Allah present in the most ordinary moments of the day. It protects your home from what the Prophet said enters when His name is absent.

Start tonight. Before your next meal. Just: Bismillah.

Then say it again tomorrow. And the day after.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you say before eating in Islam?

Say 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah) before eating. The full recommended phrase is 'Bismillahi wa ala barakatillah' (In the name of Allah and upon the blessings of Allah). This is based on authentic hadith from the Prophet.

What if I forget to say Bismillah before eating?

If you forget and remember during the meal, say: 'Bismillahi fi awwalihi wa akhirihi' (In the name of Allah at its beginning and its end). The Prophet specifically taught this dua for those who forget. You do not need to restart or feel guilty — just say it when you remember.

Is saying Bismillah before eating obligatory?

It is sunnah muakkadah (strongly recommended) according to the majority of scholars. Some Hanafi scholars consider it wajib (obligatory). All schools agree it should be said. Omitting it intentionally means Shaytan shares in your food, as described in hadith.

Do you say Bismillah out loud or quietly?

Either is valid. The Prophet would sometimes say it audibly, which served as a reminder for others. If you are eating alone, saying it quietly or in your heart is sufficient. If eating with family, saying it aloud helps build the habit in the household.

What is the dua after eating?

After eating, say: 'Alhamdulillahil-ladhi at'amana wa saqana wa ja'alana Muslimin' (Praise be to Allah who fed us, gave us drink, and made us Muslims). Abu Dawud 3850. This dua of gratitude completes the sunnah of eating.
