In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

The dawn of Eid al-Adha with prayer beads and a Quran, representing the sacred time of Udhiyah sacrifice

The word Udhiyah (ุฃุถุญูŠุฉ) comes from the root meaning "to sacrifice at a specific time" โ€” specifically the duhaa time, the early morning period of Eid. This sacrifice is not just an event. It is a statement: what I have belongs to Allah, and I am willing to give it back.

Understanding the rules of Udhiyah is about more than logistics. It is about ensuring that when you make this sacrifice, it is fully aligned with what Allah and His Messenger ๏ทบ have established โ€” spiritually and practically.

What Makes Udhiyah What It Is

The Quran tells us what Ibrahim's sacrifice was about:

"Their meat will not reach Allah, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you."

โ€” (Surah Al-Hajj, 22:37)

The animal itself is not what matters to Allah. The taqwa โ€” the God-consciousness, the sincerity, the willingness to give โ€” is what reaches Him. This single verse reframes every Udhiyah decision you make.

The rules exist to ensure your Udhiyah is valid and complete. But the spirit behind the rules is: are you doing this for Allah?

The Intention โ€” the Most Critical Rule

Udhiyah is invalid without a sincere intention made before the slaughter. The niyyah (ู†ูŠุฉ) must be:

  • For Allah's sake alone
  • Specifically as Udhiyah (not a general slaughter for a feast)
  • Made before or at the moment of slaughter โ€” not after

Many Muslims sacrifice an animal and think about the logistics โ€” the price, the meat distribution, who gets which portion โ€” without pausing to make a deliberate intention. That pause, that moment of "I am doing this for You, Allah, following Ibrahim's example," is the spiritual center of the act.

Before the slaughter, say:

ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ูู…ูŽู‘ ู‡ูŽุฐูŽุง ู…ูู†ูƒูŽ ูˆูŽู„ูŽูƒูŽ

Allahumma hadha minka wa lak

"O Allah, this is from You and for You."

Then immediately:

ุจูุณู’ู…ู ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ู ูˆูŽุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ู ุฃูŽูƒู’ุจูŽุฑู

Bismillahi Allahu Akbar

"In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest."

The Conditions for Udhiyah Validity

1. Who Performs It

Person making the Udhiyah must be Muslim, sane, and (according to those who call it wajib) possess nisab on the days of Eid al-Adha while being a resident.

You can designate someone else to slaughter on your behalf โ€” a butcher, an Islamic organization overseas. The intention is yours; the act can be delegated.

2. Valid Animals

AnimalMinimum AgeShares
Sheep6 months (if it appears a year old)1 share per animal
Goat1 year1 share per animal
Cow / Buffalo2 yearsUp to 7 shares
Camel5 yearsUp to 7 shares

Defects that disqualify: clearly one-eyed, clearly sick, clearly lame, or so emaciated its bones have no marrow. Minor issues (small wound, chipped horn, minor ear cut) do not invalidate the Udhiyah.

3. The Timing Window

Udhiyah becomes valid after:

  • The Eid prayer of the 10th of Dhul Hijjah (the most preferred day)
  • And continues through the 11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhul Hijjah

Sacrificing before the Eid prayer is not a valid Udhiyah โ€” it becomes regular sadaqah.

The Sunnah Practices Around Udhiyah

Not Cutting Hair or Nails in Dhul Hijjah

The Prophet ๏ทบ said:

"When the ten days enter and one of you intends to sacrifice, let them not touch their hair or skin."

โ€” (Sahih Muslim 1977)

This is a Sunnah, not a condition of validity. But observing it brings the person making Udhiyah into a shared state of spiritual preparation similar to the pilgrim in Hajj.

Being Present at the Slaughter (When Possible)

The Prophet slaughtered his own Udhiyah animals. Witnessing the slaughter when you can โ€” or at least being present โ€” connects you to the act in a way that writing a donation check cannot fully replicate.

Eating from Your Udhiyah Meat

It is Sunnah to eat from your own Udhiyah. Many Muslims give all the meat away, thinking that is more generous. But eating from it yourself is a Sunnah the Prophet observed, and you are not sinful for eating from your sacrifice.

Distributing in Three Parts

Recommended: one-third for yourself and family, one-third for relatives and friends, one-third for the poor and needy. The portion for the needy is the most emphasized โ€” especially if you are doing Udhiyah via donation to communities in need.

When Udhiyah Is Done on Behalf of Others

For Deceased Family Members

Many Muslims perform a separate Udhiyah on behalf of deceased parents or relatives. This is permissible and recommended, following the Sunnah that the Prophet made Udhiyah on behalf of himself and his household (including those who would come after). Some scholars include the deceased in the household Udhiyah by intention.

For Someone Overseas

If you are in a non-Muslim country and choose to donate for Udhiyah overseas โ€” to Yemen, Syria, Pakistan, or elsewhere โ€” ensure the organization:

  • Has a valid track record
  • Actually performs the slaughter on time (10th-13th of Dhul Hijjah)
  • Distributes to genuine recipients

The dua for eid al adha covers the specific supplications for this blessed day. The first 10 days of dhul hijjah and virtues of dhul hijjah articles show how to maximize the sacred season.

Common Questions

Is online Udhiyah donation fully valid? Yes, if the organization performs the actual slaughter within the valid window. Your intention + their execution = your Udhiyah. Verify timing and process before donating.

What if the Udhiyah animal dies before slaughter? If it died through no negligence on your part, you are not required to replace it. If you could have prevented its death and did not, many scholars recommend replacing it. In cases of financial hardship, make dua and give sadaqah in lieu.

Can you give Udhiyah meat to non-Muslims? Yes. You can give from the household share or the gift share to non-Muslim neighbors or colleagues. This is an act of generosity aligned with Islamic ethics of neighborly relations.

Does Udhiyah replace Hajj for those who cannot go? No. Udhiyah and Hajj are separate obligations. Udhiyah does not fulfill the obligation of Hajj. If Hajj is obligatory upon you and you have means, it remains obligatory.

The Sacrifice That Reaches Allah

The animal dies. The meat is distributed. But what reaches Allah is the intention, the taqwa, the conscious choosing of obedience over convenience.

The what is eid al adha article captures the full significance of this day. Do not let Udhiyah become just a transaction โ€” a payment made and box checked. Let it be the culmination of a 10-day spiritual climb through the sacred season of Dhul Hijjah.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Udhiyah?

Udhiyah (also spelled Udhhiyah or Adhiyah) is the Islamic sacrifice performed on Eid al-Adha โ€” the 10th, 11th, 12th, or 13th of Dhul Hijjah. It commemorates the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismail as an act of obedience to Allah. The Arabic term Qurbani means the same act. Both words refer to the Eid al-Adha sacrifice.

What is the correct intention for Udhiyah?

The niyyah must be that you are performing Udhiyah for Allah's sake alone, following the Sunnah of Ibrahim. The intention is in the heart โ€” no specific verbal formula is required, though stating it is recommended. The intention must be made before the slaughter; you cannot intend afterward.

Can the same Udhiyah cover both a living and deceased person?

Yes, according to many scholars. You may make Udhiyah on behalf of yourself and your household including deceased family members. Some scholars make specific Udhiyah for the deceased separately; others consider it included in the family Udhiyah. Both are valid positions.

Does the person doing Udhiyah need to avoid cutting hair and nails?

Yes, this is a confirmed Sunnah. The Prophet said that whoever intends to make Udhiyah should not cut their hair or clip their nails from the first of Dhul Hijjah until after the slaughter. This is not a condition of validity โ€” Udhiyah is valid even if you cut hair first โ€” but observing it is rewarded.

What is the ruling on Udhiyah for someone in Hajj?

A person performing Hajj who slaughters the hady (the Hajj sacrifice) does not additionally need to perform Udhiyah for themselves. The hady fulfills a related but distinct obligation. Family members at home who are not in Hajj should still perform Udhiyah if they meet the conditions.
