In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Ramadan is the one month of the year when the mosques fill every night. But by the second week, that crowd thins โ and by the third, many Muslims who started strong have quietly stopped showing up for Taraweeh.
This guide is not just about the mechanics of Taraweeh. It is about how to actually pray it, night after night, for the whole month โ and what to do when your nafs starts making excuses.
What Taraweeh Is and Why It Matters
Taraweeh (ุชุฑุงููุญ) is the voluntary night prayer of Ramadan, performed after Isha and before Fajr. The word comes from the Arabic root raaha โ rest โ because in early practice, worshippers would rest between every four rakats.
The Prophet ๏ทบ said:
Man qama Ramadana imanan wahtisaban, ghufira lahu ma taqaddama min dhanbihi
"Whoever stands in prayer during Ramadan with faith and seeking reward, his past sins will be forgiven."
โ (Sahih Bukhari 37)
That promise covers the entire month. Every night of Taraweeh you pray with sincere intention and hope counts toward it. This is not a small thing.
How Many Rakats Is Taraweeh
The scholarly positions are clear:
8 rakats โ The Prophet ๏ทบ prayed 8 rakats of night prayer in Ramadan, as reported by Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) in Sahih Muslim.
20 rakats โ Umar ibn al-Khattab organized the Companions to pray 20 rakats together in congregation, and this became the widespread practice of the early Muslim community.
Both are authentic positions. The number the mosque prays is valid. The number you can sustain at home is valid. Do not let a debate over rakats become your reason to skip. Pick a number and be consistent with it.
Taraweeh ends with 3 rakats of Witr โ this closes the night prayer and should not be left.
Step-by-Step: How to Pray Taraweeh
Before You Start
Make Wudu and find a clean place to pray. Wear something clean and modest โ the physical preparation matters for focus. Set your phone to silent. You are about to give the next 30-60 minutes to Allah.
The Structure
Taraweeh is prayed in sets of 2 rakats (rakat al-taraweeh), with a brief pause between each set of 4.
For 8-rakat Taraweeh:
- Pray 2 rakats, make tasleem (salam right and left)
- Pray 2 more rakats, make tasleem
- Sit for a short rest โ make dua, dhikr, or recite SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar
- Repeat steps 1-2 two more times (4 more rakats total)
- Pray 3 rakats Witr to close
For 20-rakat Taraweeh (as prayed in most mosques): Follow the same 2-rakat format, 10 sets of 2, with rest periods. Witr follows.
What to Recite
Any Quran recitation is valid in Taraweeh. Some options:
- Follow the imam โ let the mosque's recitation carry you
- Short surahs at home โ Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas, Al-Kawthar for brevity
- Longer portions as you build โ Surah Al-Mulk, Surah Ar-Rahman
The goal is not to rush. Slower, more attentive recitation with less is better than rushing through more.
The Rest Periods
These are not just breaks โ they are the heart of Taraweeh's name. Use them to:
- Say SubhanAllah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, Allahu Akbar 33 times
- Make personal dua while your heart is soft from recitation
- Sit quietly in the presence of Allah before resuming
The dua for taraweeh traditionally recited in these breaks is often read collectively in mosques.

Making It Stick โ The Habit Science
The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "The most beloved deeds to Allah are those done consistently, even if they are small." (Sahih Bukhari 6464)
This is exactly what modern habit research confirms โ consistency matters more than intensity. Here is how to apply it to Taraweeh:
Anchor it to Isha. Do not think of Taraweeh as a separate act of worship that starts after Isha. Think of Isha as the beginning of a longer prayer session. When you stand for Isha, mentally commit to staying for Taraweeh. The momentum of one carries into the other.
Set a minimum, not a maximum. On exhausted nights, your minimum is 2 rakats of Taraweeh. Not the full set โ 2 rakats. Then Witr. That is still Taraweeh. The habit survives. Anything above your minimum is a bonus.
Go to the mosque at least 3 nights per week. Even if you pray at home most nights, the physical act of going to the mosque for Taraweeh is a different spiritual experience. The crowd, the hafiz's recitation, the collective presence โ it sustains your motivation in a way that home prayer alone cannot.
Track it. Put a mark on your calendar for every night you pray Taraweeh. When you see a streak building โ 10, 15, 20 nights โ that visible record becomes its own motivation. Breaking a streak hurts. A full month of marks is one of the most satisfying things you can accomplish in Ramadan.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Starting strong and then scaling back entirely. Week one is packed. Week two is quieter. Week three, you are too tired. Before Ramadan starts, decide that skipping is not an option โ only reducing. Tired? Pray 4 rakats. Cannot go to the mosque? Pray 8 at home. But do not let "I can't do it fully" become "I'll skip."
Getting stuck on rakats debates. 8 or 20 โ both are valid. The nafs loves a good theological debate when the alternative is actually praying. Commit to a number and go.
Zoning out completely. Taraweeh can become physically automatic โ going through the motions while the mind wanders entirely. When you notice you have completely zoned out, restart your focus. Slow your recitation. Focus on the meaning of Surah Al-Fatiha in each rakat. Even small moments of presence matter more than a robotically complete prayer.
Delaying Witr and then forgetting. If you pray Taraweeh early and plan to pray Witr later, set a reminder. Witr cannot be made up after Fajr in the same way โ try not to miss it.
Common Questions
What if I am a woman and cannot go to the mosque? Pray Taraweeh at home. The reward is the same. Many women have beautiful Ramadan Taraweeh habits built entirely in their own homes. The how many rakats is taraweeh guide covers this in more detail.
Can I follow Taraweeh via a live-stream from a mosque? You can listen and follow the recitation for the experience, but you pray separately โ you cannot pray in congregation through a screen. Pray your own rakats while the mosque streams in the background if it helps you stay focused.
What if I fall asleep after Isha and miss Taraweeh? Wake up and pray whatever you can before Fajr โ even 2 rakats plus Witr. If Fajr comes and you slept through, you missed it for that night. Make istighfar, intend to do better tomorrow, and move on. Guilt that paralyzes is from Shaytan; guilt that motivates is healthy.
The Month That Changes Everything
Taraweeh is not just an act of worship โ it is Ramadan's structure. The month that forgives sins, the nights that carry Laylatul Qadr within them, the prayer that the Prophet himself said would bring forgiveness: all of it runs through standing in the night.
The last 10 nights of ramadan are the peak, but they arrive only after 20 nights of showing up. The habit is built by the time those nights come. Do not wait for the last ten to start.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many rakats is Taraweeh prayer?
Taraweeh is most commonly prayed as 8 or 20 rakats, followed by 3 rakats of Witr. The Prophet prayed 8 rakats of night prayer in Ramadan. Umar ibn al-Khattab organized the Companions to pray 20 in congregation. Both are valid. Choose what your mosque prays and be consistent.
Can I pray Taraweeh at home by myself?
Yes. Taraweeh can be prayed alone at home and carries full reward. Set a minimum for yourself โ even 4 rakats โ so that missing the mosque does not mean skipping entirely. The congregation adds spiritual atmosphere, but individual prayer is completely valid.
What time does Taraweeh start?
Taraweeh begins after Isha prayer and continues until Fajr. Most mosques pray Taraweeh immediately after Isha. Praying in the last third of the night carries the greatest spiritual weight โ that window overlaps with Tahajjud and is when Allah draws closest to creation.
Do I have to complete the full Taraweeh every night?
No. Praying part of Taraweeh is far better than skipping entirely. If you are tired, pray 4 or 8 rakats rather than none. The Prophet said that consistent small deeds are more beloved to Allah than large deeds done infrequently.
Is Witr prayer required after Taraweeh?
Witr is a confirmed Sunnah and should not be abandoned. If your mosque prays Witr at the end of Taraweeh, stay for it. If you pray at home and intend to wake for Tahajjud, delay Witr until after your night prayer. Never go to bed without praying Witr in Ramadan.
