Open Quran with prayer beads in warm golden light, representing Quranic protection and ruqyah against black magic

The Quran takes black magic seriously. It does not dismiss it as superstition or explain it away. Surah Al-Baqarah devotes eight verses to the story of Harut and Marut — angels who came with the knowledge of sihr as a trial, and whom people used for harm. The Quran calls those who practice sihr as having sold their souls.

And then the Quran gives you the tools to protect yourself.

Understanding how to use those tools — the specific surahs, the daily practice, the Prophetic protocol — is what this article is about.

What the Quran Says About Black Magic

Black magic (sihr) is real in Islamic theology. Its reality is confirmed in the Quran:

وَاتَّبَعُوا مَا تَتْلُو الشَّيَاطِينُ عَلَىٰ مُلْكِ سُلَيْمَانَ ۖ وَمَا كَفَرَ سُلَيْمَانُ وَلَٰكِنَّ الشَّيَاطِينَ كَفَرُوا يُعَلِّمُونَ النَّاسَ السِّحْرَ

Wattaba'u ma tatlu ash-shayatinu 'ala mulki Sulayman, wa ma kafara Sulaymanu wa lakin ash-shayatina kafaru yu'allimun an-nasa as-sihr

"And they followed what the devils had recited over the kingdom of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic." — (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:102)

And in the last two surahs — Al-Falaq and An-Nas — the Quran provides the explicit refuge:

وَمِن شَرِّ النَّفَّاثَاتِ فِي الْعُقَدِ

Wa min sharri an-naffathati fil-'uqad

"And from the evil of the blowers in knots." — (Surah Al-Falaq, 113:4)

The "blowers in knots" — an-naffathat — refers specifically to those who practice sihr using knotted cords and breath-blowing, which is one of the ancient forms of magic mentioned in Islamic tradition. This verse was not revealed abstractly. It was revealed after the Prophet ﷺ was himself affected by sihr — a knot placed in a well — and was cured through divine guidance and the recitation of the Mu'awwidhatayn. (Sahih Bukhari 3268)

The Core Surahs for Protection

The Mu'awwidhatayn — Al-Falaq and An-Nas

These are the primary anti-sihr surahs. The Prophet ﷺ recited them every morning and evening, blowing onto his hands and wiping his body. He said: "No person seeks refuge with anything like them." (Sunan Abu Dawud 1463)

Al-Falaq seeks refuge from the evil of created things, from the darkness of the night, from the harm of those who blow in knots (sihr), and from the harm of the envier.

An-Nas seeks refuge from the whispering of the retreating one — Shaytan — who whispers in the chests of mankind and of jinn.

Together they cover the two primary sources of spiritual harm: external magic and internal whispers. The daily practice of the 3 Quls (Al-Ikhlas + Al-Falaq + An-Nas) three times each is the most directly Prophetic protection you have.

Ayatul Kursi — The Throne Verse

"Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining." — (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:255)

The Prophet ﷺ said that reciting Ayatul Kursi after every obligatory salah provides protection until the next prayer. (Sunan al-Nasa'i 9928) A famous hadith also describes how a jinn tried to steal charity and was caught, and when asked why he kept coming back, he revealed: "Whoever recites Ayatul Kursi when going to sleep, a guardian from Allah will protect him and Shaytan will not come near him until morning." (Sahih Bukhari 5010)

Surah Al-Baqarah — The Household Shield

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Do not make your houses into graves. Truly Shaytan runs from the house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited." (Sahih Muslim 780)

A household that regularly hears Surah Al-Baqarah has a natural protection that no sihr can easily penetrate. This does not need to be daily recitation by memory — it can be played via audio recitation while present and attentive.

Why Modern Muslims Are Vulnerable

The vulnerability to sihr and its psychological effects is often worse in those who:

  • Have weak daily protection practices (skipping the morning/evening adhkar)
  • Are isolated spiritually — not connected to a community of practice
  • Have anxiety tendencies that make the nafs amplify every unexplained symptom into a sihr diagnosis

That last point is important. Not every bad luck streak, relationship difficulty, or inexplicable sadness is sihr. The nafs — and sometimes cultural communities — rush to sihr as an explanation for things that are actually depression, relationship dysfunction, or plain life difficulty.

The dua for protection from shaytan and the dhikr for protection cover the daily practices that build genuine spiritual immunity — not as magic-canceling superweapons, but as a sustainable connection to Allah's protection.

The Daily Protection Routine

This is the Prophetic protocol, distilled into a daily practice:

Morning (after Fajr):

  • Ayatul Kursi once
  • Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas — three times each, blowing onto hands, wiping over body
  • The general morning adhkar (including A'udhu bi kalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq — "I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created")

After every salah:

  • Ayatul Kursi once

Evening (after Maghrib):

  • Same as the morning 3 Quls practice

Before sleep:

  • Ayatul Kursi
  • Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas — three times each

Weekly:

  • Surah Al-Baqarah recited in or played in the home

The benefits of reading the 3 quls goes deeper into the spiritual mechanics of this protection. The surah for protection covers the broader category.

Common Questions

What if I suspect I already have sihr on me? Begin the protective practices above immediately and consistently. Seek a trustworthy scholar trained in ruqyah — not a fortune teller, not someone who uses methods outside the Quran and Sunnah. The authentic treatment for sihr is Quranic ruqyah, specific duas, and potentially drinking water over which Quranic verses have been recited.

Is playing Quran audio equivalent to reciting? For household protection from Shaytan, played audio is mentioned by some scholars as having a protective effect. For personal ruqyah, reciting yourself (or having a person recite directly) is more effective and more established.

Is all unusual bad luck a sign of sihr? No. The Islamic position on this is to first exhaust natural explanations. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Seek treatment, for Allah has not created a disease without creating a treatment." Medical, psychological, and relational factors explain most human suffering. Sihr is real but uncommon — treating it as a default explanation leads to paranoia and seeking out illegitimate "cures."

Can I do ruqyah on my children? Yes. The Prophet ﷺ performed ruqyah on Hasan and Husayn (his grandsons), reciting the Mu'awwidhatayn and asking for Allah's protection from every evil eye and harmful spirit. The dua for protection of children covers the specific prophetic language.

The Best Shield Is Daily Practice

The protection the Quran offers is not a one-time ritual — it is a daily practice that builds an accumulated shield. Consistency is the point. The nafs wants a dramatic solution: a single ruqyah session that fixes everything. The Prophetic way is different: morning and evening, every day, building a relationship with the words of Allah that makes you less permeable to everything that would harm you.

Start with the 3 Quls and Ayatul Kursi. Do it every morning and evening for thirty days. Notice what changes — not just in external circumstances, but in your internal sense of being held.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which surah protects from black magic?

The most powerful protection against black magic (sihr) comes from the last two surahs of the Quran — Al-Falaq and An-Nas — which are called the Mu'awwidhatayn (the two seeking-refuge surahs). Ayatul Kursi (2:255) is also a primary protection, along with Surah Al-Baqarah recited in the home. The Prophet ﷺ was himself affected by sihr and was cured through divine revelation — the cure came through the Mu'awwidhatayn.

Is black magic (sihr) real in Islam?

Yes. Black magic (sihr) is real in Islam — its existence is confirmed by the Quran (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:102) and by authentic hadith, including the famous narration of the Prophet ﷺ himself being affected by it (Sahih Bukhari 3268). Sihr is also strongly prohibited — practicing it is considered a major sin. The Quran and Sunnah acknowledge the reality of sihr while providing the means of protection against it.

How do I know if I have been affected by black magic?

The legitimate Islamic way is to seek diagnosis through a trustworthy scholar trained in ruqyah — not fortune tellers or those who claim to see jinn. Symptoms scholars mention include unusual recurring nightmares, extreme unexplained aversion to one's spouse, sudden severe depression with no clear cause, or physical symptoms that doctors cannot explain. However, many of these symptoms have mundane causes — do not jump to sihr as an explanation without proper assessment.

Can I perform ruqyah on myself?

Yes. Self-ruqyah is established and encouraged. Recite Ayatul Kursi, Al-Fatiha, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas over yourself, particularly cupping your hands, blowing, and wiping over your body. The Prophet ﷺ did this before sleep every night. Self-ruqyah can be done without needing another person.

Which surahs to recite for protection against sihr daily?

The daily Prophetic protocol: Ayatul Kursi after every obligatory prayer; Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas three times each morning and evening (blowing onto hands and wiping the body); Surah Al-Baqarah recited in your home regularly (the Prophet ﷺ said sihr does not enter a home in which Al-Baqarah is recited). These form a complete daily shield.
