بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Every day you face things you cannot see. Envy, spiritual harm, the whispers of the nafs, the subtle ways fear and negativity can seep in.
Islam does not leave you defenseless. The Prophet ﷺ gave us specific surahs — specific words from Allah — as a daily spiritual shield. He recited them himself, taught them to his Companions, and described their protection in concrete terms.
This is not superstition. It is structured reliance on Allah through the words He chose to reveal.
Why These Surahs Work
The Islamic understanding of protection from spiritual harm is grounded in the concept of ta'awwudh — seeking refuge. Allah says in Surah Al-Falaq (113:1):
قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ
Qul a'udhu bi-rabbil-falaq
"Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak." — (Surah Al-Falaq, 113:1)
And in Surah An-Nas (114:1):
قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ
Qul a'udhu bi-rabbin-nas
"Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind." — (Surah An-Nas, 114:1)
The word a'udhu means "I take shelter, I seek cover." You are not warding off evil through personal power. You are running to a stronger fortress — Allah's protection — and placing yourself under it.
The Core Surahs for Protection
The Mu'awwidhatayn — Al-Falaq and An-Nas
These two surahs (113 and 114) form a pair — together called the Mu'awwidhatayn (the two shelter-seekers). They were revealed at a time when the Prophet ﷺ was affected by black magic, and their revelation marked the Quranic response to that harm.
The Prophet ﷺ said about them:
"There have not been revealed any surahs like them." — (Sunan al-Nasa'i 5432)
Al-Falaq seeks refuge from:
- The evil of what Allah has created (general harm)
- The darkness of night when it covers (nocturnal dangers)
- Those who blow into knots (sorcery)
- The envious person when they envy (evil eye and hasad)
An-Nas seeks refuge from:
- The whispering of Al-Waswas (Shaytan) who retreats when Allah's name is mentioned
- Whispering from jinn and mankind
Together, they cover every category of spiritual harm the human being faces: external harm, nocturnal harm, sorcery, envy, and internal whispers.
Ayatul Kursi — The Greatest Verse
Ayatul Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:255) is described by the Prophet ﷺ as the greatest verse in the entire Quran.
"Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep..." — (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:255)
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever recites Ayatul Kursi at night, Allah will continue to protect them until the morning." (Sahih Bukhari 2311)
After each obligatory prayer, the Prophet ﷺ instructed recitation of Ayatul Kursi, saying: "Nothing will prevent them from entering Jannah except death." (Sunan al-Nasa'i 9928)
Al-Ikhlas — Purity and Completeness
Surah Al-Ikhlas (112) is not explicitly a protection surah, but it is paired with the two shelter surahs in the Prophetic morning and evening practice. It affirms the oneness and completeness of Allah — which is itself a form of protection through correct belief and constant affirmation of tawhid.
The Prophet ﷺ said reciting Al-Ikhlas three times is equal in reward to reciting the entire Quran once. (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2893) Starting your protection practice with this affirmation of who Allah is grounds everything that follows.
The Daily Protection Protocol
Here is the precise practice the Prophet ﷺ followed and taught:
Morning (after Fajr): Recite Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas — three times each. After each recitation, blow lightly onto your hands and wipe over your face and chest. This is the Sunnah way the Prophet ﷺ was observed doing this. (Sunan Abu Dawud 5056)
Evening (after Asr or Maghrib): Repeat the same sequence — three times each, same hand-wiping practice.
After each obligatory prayer: Recite Ayatul Kursi once.
Before sleep: Recite Ayatul Kursi once. Recite the 3 Quls three times with hand-wiping. Then recite Surah Al-Baqarah verses 285-286 (Amanar-rasulu...) once — the Prophet ﷺ said these two verses at night are sufficient for the night.
This entire nightly sequence takes under five minutes. It is the spiritual equivalent of locking your door before bed.

For Your Household
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Do not turn your house into a grave. Shaytan runs from the house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited." (Sahih Muslim 780)
Reciting Al-Baqarah in the home — even a few pages at a time — protects the household. Completing it in the home across three days or a week is a sunnah practice many families have used for generations.
For children specifically, reciting the 3 Quls and Ayatul Kursi over them before sleep, or teaching them to recite these themselves, is one of the most concrete protective acts a parent can take. See dua for protection and names of Allah for protection for additional supplications to add alongside the surahs.
Signs Your Protection Practice Is Working
Progress in spiritual protection is not usually dramatic. It is subtle:
- You feel less anxious before sleep than you used to
- The quality of your night's rest gradually improves
- You notice negative thoughts or waswas losing their grip more quickly
- The consistency of the practice itself builds a sense of spiritual routine and calm
Common Questions
Do I need to blow onto my hands for the 3 Quls? The blowing is sunnah and adds to the practice. If you are in a public space, you can recite without the blowing and still gain the benefit. The recitation itself is the essential act; the blowing is an additional sunnah action.
What if I fall asleep before finishing the bedtime surahs? Do your best to complete Ayatul Kursi and the 3 Quls before lying down — make it part of your pre-sleep routine like brushing your teeth. If you do fall asleep mid-recitation from sincere exhaustion, that is understandable. The intention and the effort count.
How does reading the 3 Quls compare to reading Ayatul Kursi? They serve overlapping but distinct purposes. Ayatul Kursi is the single greatest verse for protection according to the Prophet ﷺ. Al-Falaq and An-Nas are specifically designed for refuge. Al-Ikhlas reinforces tawhid. Together they form a complete daily practice. See benefits of reciting Ayatul Kursi and benefits of reading the 3 Quls for the full evidence behind each.
What about the evil eye specifically? Al-Falaq specifically mentions hasid (the envious person) and their envy. Scholars widely recommend reciting the Mu'awwidhatayn when you fear envy. Additionally, saying Allahumma barik when you praise something beautiful in others helps prevent the evil eye from leaving you.
Start Tonight
The protection is available to you tonight. It costs five minutes before sleep and five minutes in the morning. The Prophet ﷺ never skipped this practice. That consistency — year after year, throughout his prophethood — tells you everything about how seriously he took it.
Begin with Ayatul Kursi tonight. Add the 3 Quls tomorrow morning. Build from there, one piece at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which surah is best for protection in Islam?
The Prophet ﷺ specifically identified Al-Falaq and An-Nas (together called the Mu'awwidhatayn) as unmatched protection surahs, saying nothing in creation can equal them for seeking refuge. Ayatul Kursi is also explicitly described as the greatest verse in the Quran for protection — whoever recites it at night is under Allah's protection until morning (Sahih Bukhari 2311).
When should I recite surahs for protection?
The Prophetic protocol: recite Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas three times each morning (after Fajr) and evening (after Asr or Maghrib), blowing onto your hands and wiping your face and chest. Recite Ayatul Kursi after every obligatory prayer and before sleep. Recite Al-Baqarah 2:285-286 before sleep for household protection.
Does Ayatul Kursi really protect you while you sleep?
Yes — this is established in a famous hadith from Sahih Bukhari. A figure (later identified as Shaytan) taught Abu Hurairah that whoever recites Ayatul Kursi before sleep will be under Allah's protection and no devil will approach them until morning. The Prophet ﷺ confirmed: 'He told you the truth, though he is a liar.' (Sahih Bukhari 2311)
How many times should I read the 3 Quls for protection?
The Sunnah is to recite each surah (Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas) three times in the morning and three times in the evening, blowing onto your hands and wiping your face and body. The Prophet ﷺ would do this and is described as saying it was sufficient for every protection. (Sunan Abu Dawud 5056)
Which surah protects from the evil eye?
Al-Falaq and An-Nas both mention protection from envy and from the evil of those who cast a grudge. Ayatul Kursi is also widely cited for protection from the evil eye. For children and household protection, Al-Baqarah recited in the home drives away Shaytan (Sahih Muslim 780). Many scholars also recommend Surah Al-Baqarah verses 285-286 before sleep.
