ุจูุณูู ู ุงูููู ุงูุฑููุญูู ูฐูู ุงูุฑููุญูููู ู
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Shaytan made a promise when he was expelled: "I will sit in wait for them on Your straight path. Then I will come at them from in front of them, from behind them, from their right, from their left, and You will not find most of them grateful." (Quran 7:16-17)
He has been working on that promise ever since. He does not take days off, and he does not run out of patience. He knows your specific weaknesses better than most people in your life do. He targets you at your most vulnerable moments โ when you are tired, angry, lonely, or tempted.
But Allah has not left us unprotected. For every angle shaytan attacks from, there is a protection Allah has given โ in the Quran, in the Sunnah, in the morning and evening adhkar that the Prophet (peace be upon him) taught. The question is whether we actually use them.
The Duas for Protection from Shaytan
The primary refuge โ said throughout the day:
ุฃูุนููุฐู ุจูุงูููู ู ููู ุงูุดููููุทูุงูู ุงูุฑููุฌููู ู
A'udhu billahi min ash-shaytan ir-rajim.
"I seek refuge in Allah from the outcast shaytan." โ (Quran 16:98)
This is the foundational protection โ the door you close before shaytan can enter. It is commanded before Quran recitation, but the Sunnah extends it to any moment of temptation, anger, or perceived attack.
Ayat al-Kursi โ the most powerful bedtime protection:
ุงูููููู ูุงู ุฅููููู ุฅููุงูู ูููู ุงููุญูููู ุงููููููููู ู...
Allahu la ilaha illa Huwal-Hayy ul-Qayyum...
"Allah โ there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence..." โ (Quran 2:255)
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi when going to bed, Allah will appoint a guardian for him and shaytan will not come near him until morning." (Bukhari 5010)
The dua for entering the home โ closing the door on shaytan literally:
ุจูุณูู ู ุงูููู ููููุฌูููุง ููุจูุณูู ู ุงูููู ุฎูุฑูุฌูููุง ููุนูููู ุงูููู ุฑูุจููููุง ุชููููููููููุง
Bismillahi walajna wa bismillahi kharajna wa 'ala Allahi Rabbina tawakkalna.
"In the name of Allah we enter, in the name of Allah we leave, and upon Allah our Lord we rely." โ (Abu Dawud 5096)
The Prophet said that when a person says this upon entering, shaytan says: "There is no place for us to spend the night here." If the person also mentions Allah's name before eating, shaytan says: "There is no dinner or night's lodging for us."
The Story Behind It
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) was appointed by the Prophet (peace be upon him) to guard the charity collected in Ramadan. Three nights in a row, a man appeared and began stealing from the food.
On the third night, Abu Hurairah caught him and threatened to take him to the Prophet. The man pleaded and offered something in exchange for his release: "When you go to your bed, recite Ayat al-Kursi. Allah will appoint a guardian for you and shaytan will not come near you until morning."
Abu Hurairah let him go and reported the incident to the Prophet. The Prophet smiled and said: "He told you the truth, though he is a liar. Do you know who you were speaking with for three nights, Abu Hurairah? That was shaytan." (Bukhari 3275)
Even shaytan testified to the power of Ayat al-Kursi. This is not coincidence. This is divine design โ Allah placed the most powerful protection against shaytan in the same book He revealed to guide humanity. The protection and the guidance come from the same source.
How to Make This Dua Part of Your Daily Life
Protection from shaytan is not a single dua said once โ it is a daily practice with multiple touch points. Think of it as closing different doors throughout the day so that shaytan has no entry point.
Build Ayat al-Kursi into your bedtime routine. This is the highest-impact single practice you can add tonight. Before you sleep, sit up, recite Ayat al-Kursi once, and then your sleeping dua. The Prophet's guarantee of protection until morning is as clear as any promise in the hadith literature. The complete bedtime sequence the Prophet recommended is covered in the Related Duas section below.
Recite the last three surahs morning and evening. Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas โ recited three times each in the morning and evening โ are a comprehensive daily protection. Al-Falaq protects from external harms; An-Nas protects from the internal whispering of shaytan. Together, they cover both threats. Make this part of your morning and evening adhkar โ consistently, every single day.
Say bismillah before every action. The most underrated protection from shaytan is one of the simplest: beginning every act with Allah's name. The Prophet taught that shaytan cannot accompany a person in their food, their entering the home, or their intercourse if the person remembers Allah's name. Bismillah is shaytan's exit cue.
When angry โ seek refuge immediately. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked about a man who should say when angry. He said: "Let him say: A'udhu billahi min ash-shaytan ir-rajim." (Bukhari 6115) Anger is one of shaytan's primary entry points. Seeking refuge in Allah interrupts the pattern before it escalates.
Keep the salah on time. Every prayer is an act of protection. The Prophet said that the heart of the person who keeps their salah is protected. Neglecting prayer opens gaps in the shield. This is not superstition โ it is the pattern the Prophet described consistently.

Common Questions
If I forget to say the dua, am I unprotected?
Allah's mercy is vast, and forgetting does not leave you without all protection. What the duas do is consciously invite Allah's protection and close the doors shaytan tries to use. Consistency in these practices matters more than any single missed instance. If you forget and then remember, say the relevant dua when you recall it.
Can shaytan affect people who regularly do adhkar?
The Sunnah suggests that consistent adhkar significantly reduces shaytan's access and influence. However, no Muslim is completely immune to shaytan's whispers in this life โ that is the nature of the test. What consistent adhkar does is make shaytan's influence weaker and shorter-lived, and it makes you quicker to recognize and reject his suggestions.
Is it true that Surah Al-Baqarah in the home keeps shaytan away?
Yes โ the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Do not turn your homes into graveyards. Indeed, shaytan flees from the home in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited." (Muslim 780) Regular recitation of Surah Al-Baqarah in the home creates an environment of protection and barakah.
Closing
Shaytan's attacks are real, consistent, and specific to your weaknesses. But Allah's protection is also real, accessible, and sufficient โ if you actually use it.
Every morning dua is armor. Every Ayat al-Kursi before sleep is a locked door. Every bismillah is a barrier. The question is not whether the protection works โ the Prophet confirmed that it does. The question is whether you will build the daily habit of using it.
Start tonight. Recite Ayat al-Kursi before you sleep. Then build from there, one practice at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the dua for protection from shaytan?
The primary dua is: A'udhu billahi min ash-shaytan ir-rajim โ I seek refuge in Allah from the outcast shaytan (Quran 16:98). For sleep protection, Ayat al-Kursi (2:255) is the most powerful. The Prophet said whoever recites it before sleeping will be protected by Allah and shaytan will not come near him until morning. (Bukhari 5010)
When should I seek refuge from shaytan?
Before reciting Quran (Quran 16:98), when entering the bathroom, when feeling angry, when a waswas (whisper) enters the mind, before sleeping, upon entering the home, and before any major act of worship. The Prophet taught a specific dua for each of these situations โ building protection into every transition point of the day.
Does Ayat al-Kursi really protect from shaytan?
Yes โ this is confirmed by multiple authentic narrations. The most famous is the story of Abu Hurairah catching shaytan stealing from the charity of Ramadan. Shaytan revealed that reciting Ayat al-Kursi before sleeping provides protection until morning. The Prophet confirmed: 'He told you the truth, though he is a liar.' (Bukhari 3275)
How does shaytan's influence work on a Muslim?
Shaytan works through whispers (waswas) in the heart, making wrong things seem attractive and right things seem burdensome. He is described in the Quran as your clear enemy (36:60) and as one who whispers in the breasts of mankind (114:5). His influence weakens when a person consistently remembers Allah โ which is why adhkar and dua are the primary defenses.
What is the strongest protection from shaytan in Islam?
The comprehensive protection comes from: daily morning and evening adhkar (including Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas, and Ayat al-Kursi), salah on time, avoiding major sins, and maintaining the remembrance of Allah throughout the day. No single dua provides complete protection โ it is the consistent daily practice that builds a spiritual shield.
