In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Every parent knows the feeling. You watch your child sleeping peacefully and feel a love so complete it is almost frightening โ because with it comes the weight of responsibility. What if something harms them when I am not there? What if the world takes from them what I cannot protect?
This is not a modern anxiety. It is the oldest parental feeling in human history. And the most successful parents in this deen โ the ones whose children we still speak about centuries later โ responded to it the same way.
They made dua.
Ibrahim (peace be upon him) made dua for his children. The mother of Maryam made dua for her daughter. The Prophet (peace be upon him) made dua for his grandchildren. The tradition of parents seeking Allah's protection for their children is as old as parenthood itself in Islam, and the dua is specific, powerful, and authenticated.
The Dua for Protection of Children
The dua the Prophet used for Hasan and Husain:
ุฃูุนููุฐูููู ูุง ุจูููููู ูุงุชู ุงูููู ุงูุชููุงู ููุฉู ู ููู ููููู ุดูููุทูุงูู ููููุงู ููุฉู ููู ููู ููููู ุนููููู ูุงูู ููุฉู
U'idhukuma bi kalimatillahi't-tammati min kulli shaytanin wa hammah, wa min kulli 'aynin lammah.
"I seek refuge for you both in the perfect words of Allah from every shaytan and every poisonous creature and from every evil eye." โ (Bukhari 3371)
For one child: U'idhuka (singular). For two or more: U'idhukuma or U'idhukum.
The dua of the mother of Maryam โ for a child and all their offspring:
ุฅููููู ุฃูุนููุฐูููุง ุจููู ููุฐูุฑูููููุชูููุง ู ููู ุงูุดููููุทูุงูู ุงูุฑููุฌููู ู
Inni u'idhuha bika wa dhurriyyataha min ash-shaytan ir-rajim.
"I seek refuge for her and her offspring in You from the outcast shaytan." โ (Quran 3:36)
This dua is remarkable because it covers not just the child but all their descendants โ a supplication whose effects extend across generations.
The Story Behind It
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated what the Prophet (peace be upon him) said when making this dua: "Your forefather Ibrahim (peace be upon him) used to seek protection for Ismail and Ishaq with these words." (Bukhari 3371)
Think about what this means. The exact same dua โ u'idhu bi kalimatillahi't-tammati โ was said by the father of the prophets for his children, and then by the Prophet for his grandchildren. It crossed centuries, cultures, and family lines. It was the same phrase because the same protection was needed: from shaytan, from harm, and from the evil eye.
The Prophet's care for Hasan and Husain was not merely the love of a grandfather. It was the love of a man who understood the spiritual dangers of the world and who knew exactly where to direct that concern: toward the perfect words of Allah, which alone are sufficient as a refuge.
When you say this dua for your child, you are joining a chain that includes Ibrahim, the prophets of the Banu Isra'il, and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). That is not a small thing.
How to Make This Dua Part of Your Daily Life
The most powerful parental act is not the school you choose or the activities you enroll your children in โ it is the consistency with which you seek Allah's protection for them. The dua for protection of children works best as a daily habit, not an occasional emergency prayer.
Say the dua every morning over your children. Before they leave for school, before you go to work, take thirty seconds and say U'idhuka bi kalimatillahi't-tammati min kulli shaytanin wa hammah, wa min kulli 'aynin lammah over each child. If they are old enough, say it to them directly. If they are asleep when you leave, say it quietly over them.
Say it at night before they sleep. The Prophet's household was one of the most protected in human history, and even in that household, specific duas were said over the children at bedtime. Add this protection to your children's sleep routine. Many parents also blow gently on their children after reciting it, following the Prophetic practice of blowing lightly after recitation of protection duas.
Teach it to your children as they grow. Children who know this dua can eventually say it for themselves. A child who has been taught to seek Allah's protection directly from a young age has a spiritual skill that will serve them their entire life. See the how to raise Muslim children article for how to build these Islamic foundations systematically.
Combine it with Surah Al-Falaq and An-Nas. The last two surahs specifically address protection from evil eye (hasad), harm, and shaytan's whispers. Reciting them over your children โ especially at night โ adds another layer of protection from the same sources the Prophet's dua addresses. The Related Duas section below covers this in more detail.
Make dua for your children's spiritual protection specifically. The dua above covers physical and spiritual harm, evil eye, and shaytan. Add personal duas for your children's faith, character, and future. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) did not just ask for his children's physical protection โ he asked: "My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and [also] from my descendants." (Quran 14:40) Physical protection and spiritual development belong in the same parental supplication.

Common Questions
Can I make this dua for children who are not mine?
Yes โ the dua is not restricted to biological parents. You can say it for nieces, nephews, students, the children of friends, or any child in your care. The Prophet's use of it for his grandchildren shows that the relationship of care โ not just biology โ is sufficient to make this dua appropriate.
What if I feel guilty that I have not been making these duas consistently?
Start now. The beauty of dua is that it has no statute of limitations. There is no point in the child's life at which it is too late for a parent to seek Allah's protection for them. Make the dua tonight. Tomorrow night. Build the habit from wherever you are.
Should I say this dua even when my children seem fine and safe?
Yes โ especially then. The dua for protection is preventive, not just reactive. The Prophet said it for Hasan and Husain as a regular practice, not only when they faced visible danger. Consistent, routine protection duas build a hedge that prevents harm from reaching them โ not a response after harm has already come.
Closing
You cannot be everywhere your child goes. You cannot see every threat, prevent every harm, or shield them from every difficulty they will face. This is the test of parenting: tremendous love, limited power.
But you can do what every prophet did for their children. You can make dua. You can seek their protection in the perfect words of Allah โ the only protection that is truly sufficient, because it comes from the only One with unlimited power and perfect knowledge.
Say the dua tonight. Make it a habit. And know that every morning you say it over your sleeping child, you are following a tradition that goes back to Ibrahim (peace be upon him).

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the dua for protection of children?
The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to seek protection for Hasan and Husain with: U'idhukuma bi kalimatillahi't-tammati min kulli shaytanin wa hammah, wa min kulli 'aynin lammah โ I seek refuge for you both in the perfect words of Allah from every shaytan and every poisonous creature and from every evil eye. (Bukhari 3371) He said Ibrahim used the same dua for Ismail and Ishaq.
Why did the Prophet use Allah's 'perfect words' in this dua?
The phrase 'kalimat Allah at-tammah' (the perfect words of Allah) refers to the Quran and the names and attributes of Allah โ the only things that are perfect and complete, free from any deficiency. By seeking refuge in the perfect words of Allah rather than any created means, the dua acknowledges that the only true protection for a child comes from their Creator.
What is the dua from the Quran for protecting children?
The mother of Maryam made a beautiful dua when her child was born: Inni u'idhuha bika wa dhurriyyataha min ash-shaytan ir-rajim โ I seek refuge for her and her offspring in You from the outcast shaytan. (Quran 3:36). This shows that seeking Allah's protection for children is a Prophetic tradition going back to the earliest generations.
When should parents make dua for their children?
The Prophet made protective duas for children regularly โ not just in times of danger. The ideal is to make it a daily practice: morning and evening are the natural times, along with before the children sleep. Parents can also say it when children go to school, travel, or are in any situation where they cannot be watched directly.
Does evil eye (ayn) affect children?
Yes โ the Prophet (peace be upon him) explicitly mentioned evil eye in this protective dua: 'and from every evil eye (ayn lammah).' He confirmed that evil eye is real: 'The evil eye is real' (Muslim 2188). Children are considered particularly vulnerable. The dua for protection of children specifically covers this, as does recitation of Surah Al-Falaq and An-Nas.
