بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

There is a unique kind of quiet that settles over you when you step into the mosque with intention for Itikaf and know you are not leaving until Ramadan ends. The phone is mostly down. The outside world continues without you. For 10 days and nights, your world is reduced to prayer, Quran, dhikr, and sleep.
The Prophet ﷺ observed Itikaf every Ramadan without exception — and the year he passed away, he completed 20 days. Understanding the rules of Itikaf is the first step toward actually doing it.
What Itikaf Is — The Islamic Foundation
Itikaf (اعتكاف) means to seclude oneself in the mosque with the specific intention of worship and drawing near to Allah. It is rooted in the Quran:
وَلَا تُبَاشِرُوهُنَّ وَأَنتُمْ عَاكِفُونَ فِي الْمَسَاجِدِ
Wa la tubashiruhunna wa antum akifoona fil masajid
"And do not have relations with them while you are in seclusion in the mosques."
— (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:187)
The Prophet ﷺ observed Itikaf in the last 10 nights of Ramadan seeking Laylatul Qadr:
كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَعْتَكِفُ الْعَشْرَ الْأَوَاخِرَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ حَتَّى تَوَفَّاهُ اللَّهُ
"The Prophet would observe Itikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan until Allah took him."
— (Sahih Bukhari 2026)
Itikaf in the last 10 nights is sunnah muakkadah — a confirmed Sunnah that the Prophet never abandoned in his life.
The Core Rules of Itikaf
Who Can Do Itikaf
Itikaf is valid for:
- Muslim men and women — the Prophet's wives performed Itikaf after him (Sahih Bukhari 2033)
- Those who are in a state of ritual purity — Ghusl is required to begin; Wudu is maintained
- Women — provided they are not in their menstrual period or post-birth bleeding (nifas), which restricts entry to the mosque
Where Itikaf Is Done
Itikaf must be performed in a mosque. The general scholarly position is:
- Any mosque — for women, many scholars also permit a designated prayer area within the home
- Masjid Al-Haram, Masjid An-Nabawi, and Masjid Al-Aqsa — carry greater merit, but Itikaf in your local mosque is fully valid
The Intention
Intention (niyyah) is what distinguishes Itikaf from simply sitting in the mosque. Make the intention clearly in your heart before entering. You do not need to verbalize it aloud.
Duration
- Full Sunnah Itikaf: 10 days and nights, entering before the 21st night of Ramadan begins and exiting at sunset on Eid
- Shorter Itikaf: Any duration is valid. Even one night, or a few hours, with intention is a form of Itikaf
- Minimum: Most scholars say there is no fixed minimum — intention plus time in the mosque

What Breaks Itikaf
Understanding what invalidates Itikaf is as important as understanding what it is.
Itikaf is broken by:
- Leaving the mosque without necessity — stepping outside the mosque boundaries without a valid reason immediately ends Itikaf
- Sexual intercourse — explicitly prohibited by the Quran verse above (2:187)
- Apostasy — leaving Islam, though this is a general nullifier of all acts of worship
- Menstruation or post-birth bleeding for women — this requires leaving the mosque and ends the Itikaf
Itikaf is NOT broken by:
- Using the bathroom (a necessity)
- Making Wudu or Ghusl outside the mosque if the mosque has no facilities
- Attending Jummah prayer at a different mosque if your mosque does not hold Jummah
- Eating and drinking inside the mosque area
- Brief, unavoidable conversation
- Sleeping
The "Necessity" Rule
Going outside for what Islam considers a necessity (hajah) does not break Itikaf. Scholars include:
- Answering the call of nature (bathroom)
- Making Wudu when the mosque has no facilities
- Seeking medical treatment for a serious illness
- Jummah prayer at a mosque that holds it (if yours does not)
What does NOT qualify as necessity:
- Going home to eat or rest in comfort
- Social visits
- Work (unless the Itikaf is a shorter, non-consecutive type agreed upon by some scholars)
What to Do During Itikaf
Itikaf is not just about staying in the mosque — it is about filling that time with worship. The best Itikaf is structured:
Morning through Dhuhr: Quran recitation and memorization — the mind is clearest then. Review what you read the previous day before adding new portions.
Dhuhr through Asr: Rest if needed (the Prophet napped during the day in Ramadan), followed by more Quran or written dhikr.
After Asr: Personal dua, reflection, and connection with those also doing Itikaf through beneficial conversation.
After Iftar through Taraweeh: The heart of Itikaf's night — the Taraweeh prayer with the congregation, followed by personal night prayer.
Last third of the night: The most valuable window. This is when you make your most personal and desperate duas, seeking Laylatul Qadr. Read the last 10 nights of ramadan guide to understand what to expect.
The Spiritual Purpose Beyond the Rules
Rules prevent Itikaf from being invalidated — but the spirit of Itikaf is something else entirely. It is voluntary spiritual poverty: you remove yourself from every distraction, every social obligation, every comfort zone, and you become entirely dependent on Allah.
The nafs hates this. It will whisper: "You are missing out. Your family needs you. You are being irresponsible." These whispers are precisely why Itikaf is so valuable. Every time you sit in the mosque and choose prayer over comfort, you are winning a small battle against the lower self.
The what is itikaf article covers the deeper spiritual dimension of this practice and why the Prophet never missed it.
Common Questions
Can I use my phone during Itikaf? There is no explicit prohibition. But if you are checking social media and news throughout the day, you have defeated the purpose. Most serious practitioners of Itikaf minimize phone use to genuinely necessary communication.
What if my mosque does not allow Itikaf? Find a mosque that does. Many larger mosques in Muslim communities organize Itikaf accommodations — food, sleeping arrangements, separate areas for men and women. Check your local Islamic center.
Can I do Itikaf for fewer than 10 nights? Yes. Even one night of Itikaf with sincere intention is a noble act. You can do a weekend Itikaf, or the last 3 nights. See the how to do itikaf guide for practical preparation.
Can I work remotely during Itikaf? The majority position is no — work is not a necessity that justifies leaving or being distracted. Arrange to take leave, if possible. If you genuinely cannot take 10 days off, consider a shorter Itikaf on days you can fully commit.
The Decision That Makes Ramadan Real
Most Muslims spend Ramadan improving — better prayer, more Quran, less wasted time. Itikaf is for those who want to make Ramadan transformative, not just better.
The last 10 nights contain Laylatul Qadr — a night worth more than 83 years of worship. Most Muslims spend those nights hoping they happen to be awake for the right one. Itikaf means you are awake, in the mosque, in worship, every single one of them.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Itikaf?
Itikaf is a voluntary act of worship where a person secludes themselves in the mosque with the intention of drawing closer to Allah. It is most commonly practiced in the last 10 nights of Ramadan, following the Sunnah of the Prophet who observed it every year until his death.
Is Itikaf obligatory?
No. Itikaf during the last 10 nights of Ramadan is a confirmed Sunnah (sunnah muakkadah), not an obligation. It is one of the most elevated voluntary acts of worship in Islam, but missing it is not a sin.
What breaks Itikaf?
Itikaf is broken by leaving the mosque without a valid necessity, sexual intercourse, or losing sanity. Stepping outside for a necessary reason such as using the bathroom, making wudu, or attending Jummah prayer does not break it.
Can women do Itikaf?
Yes. Women can perform Itikaf in the mosque or, according to some scholars, in a designated prayer area at home. A woman in her menses cannot do Itikaf during that time, as the mosque is restricted during menstruation.
How long does Itikaf last?
For the last 10 nights of Ramadan, the standard Itikaf begins after Fajr on the 20th of Ramadan (entering the mosque before the 21st night begins) and ends at sunset on Eid. Shorter Itikaf of any duration is also valid — even a few hours of seclusion with intention is beneficial.
