In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Once a year, a night arrives in the middle of Shaban that carries the weight of something important โ something many Muslims feel but struggle to articulate. You may have grown up hearing about Laylatul Baraat. You may have seen families light up homes or prepare specific foods in celebration.
But what does the tradition actually say? And more importantly: what should you do?
What Is Laylatul Baraat
Laylatul Baraat (ููููููุฉู ุงููุจูุฑูุงุกูุฉ) means "the Night of Innocence" or "Night of Forgiveness." It falls on the 15th night of Shaban โ the night between the 14th and 15th of the month โ which puts it approximately one month before Ramadan.
It is also known by other names: the Night of Records, Shab-e-Barat (in South Asian tradition), or Nisf Sha'ban.
The most significant hadith about this night comes from Ibn Majah:
"Allah looks down on the night of the 15th of Shaban and forgives all His creation except one who associates partners with Him or one who has enmity in their heart." โ (Ibn Majah 1390)
This hadith has been classified as hasan (acceptable) by some scholars, including Albani in one of his earlier positions, while others have classified it as weak. The scholarly discussion is ongoing, but many classical scholars accepted similar narrations and considered the night significant.
What all scholars agree on: the general virtue of istighfar, dua, and voluntary worship on any night is never in question. If some narrations indicate a night of mercy, there is wisdom in treating it as an opportunity.
What the Nafs Does With This Night
Here is where it gets honest. Your nafs has a consistent strategy when it comes to special nights: make a grand plan, fall asleep by 11pm, and feel guilty in the morning.
It also does something subtler. It lets you attend an event, eat halwa, enjoy the atmosphere โ and call that worship. The social dimension of Laylatul Baraat in many cultures is warm and meaningful. But spending the night eating and socializing while missing the actual spiritual practice is not what the hadith point toward.
There is also the issue of enmity. The very hadith about this night excludes people who carry hatred toward other Muslims. If you have a broken relationship โ with a family member, a friend, someone you wronged or who wronged you โ your nafs will ignore this detail. But it is arguably the most actionable part of the hadith.
What to Actually Do on Laylatul Baraat
Resolve any enmity before the night arrives
The hadith is specific: the person excluded from forgiveness is the one who carries enmity toward their Muslim brother or sister. This is not the time to wait for the other person to apologize first.
Make a list if you need to. Send a text. Make a call. Or at minimum, make a sincere dua asking Allah to remove the bitterness from your heart.

Allahumma aslih dhata baynina
"O Allah, rectify what is between us." โ (Abu Dawud 1510)
Spend part of the night in prayer
There is no specific prayer prescribed for Laylatul Baraat โ no special rakat count, no specific surah combination. What is recommended is what is always recommended: tahajjud, voluntary prayers, and prostration.
Pray as much as you comfortably can in the second half of the night. Even two additional rakat with a long sujood of dua is significant.
Make extended dua and istighfar
This is the night, according to narrations, when decrees for the coming year may be distributed. Whether or not the specific hadith about Laylatul Baraat is fully authenticated, making dua about your year ahead โ your health, your family, your deen, your provision โ is never wrong.
Make sincere istighfar:

Astaghfirullaha alladhi la ilaha illa huwa al-Hayyu al-Qayyumu wa atubu ilayh
"I seek forgiveness of Allah, beside Whom there is no god โ the Ever-Living, the Sustainer โ and I repent to Him." โ (Abu Dawud 1517)

Fast the 15th of Shaban
Fasting the white days of every month โ the 13th, 14th, and 15th โ is a consistent sunnah of the Prophet ๏ทบ. The 15th of Shaban falls within this practice regardless of any specific virtue assigned to Laylatul Baraat. Fasting it is appropriate and well-grounded.
Read our guide on fasting six days of Shawwal to understand how voluntary fasting fits into the Islamic year.
Recite Quran for the departed
Many scholars have considered it appropriate to recite Quran and send the reward to deceased parents or loved ones on significant nights. If this practice is part of your tradition, Laylatul Baraat is a meaningful occasion for it.
Signs You Used the Night Well
- You resolved or began to resolve at least one damaged relationship
- You made prostrations that were longer and more present than usual
- Your dua went beyond requests โ you included gratitude, praise, and repentance
- You fasted the next day
- You woke up with a lighter feeling โ the release that comes from having genuinely asked for forgiveness
The signs of a well-spent night are not dramatic. They are the quiet sense of having come close.
Common Questions
Is celebrating Laylatul Baraat with lights or sweets an innovation? Scholars differ. Many advise against cultural additions that have no prophetic basis โ lights, fireworks, specific foods โ not because they are necessarily haram in themselves, but because they can shift the focus from worship to festivity. Keep your focus on prayer, dua, and istighfar.
What if I missed the night and did not know it was happening? Seek forgiveness today. Allah's mercy is not limited to one night a year. The significance of Laylatul Baraat is an invitation to intensify worship โ not a deadline that closes Allah's door.
Can I recite Surah Yaseen three times on this night? This practice circulates widely but has no authentic source in the Prophet's sunnah or that of his companions. You are free to recite Surah Yaseen โ its virtues are real โ but assigning a specific number to this specific night without evidence is not recommended. Read about benefits of Surah Yaseen to understand what is authentically narrated about this surah.
Does Laylatul Baraat conflict with Laylatul Qadr? They are separate. Laylatul Qadr is in the last 10 nights of Ramadan and is explicitly mentioned in the Quran as greater than a thousand months. Laylatul Baraat is in Shaban. If you prepare well for Laylatul Baraat, you are one month closer to being ready for Laylatul Qadr.
Should I worry if I cannot stay awake all night? No. The Prophet ๏ทบ cautioned against exhausting yourself. Pray the evening prayer with attention, add some tahajjud after a short sleep, and make sincere dua. Quality beats duration.
This Night Is an Invitation
Laylatul Baraat is a gift wrapped in mercy. The narrations point to a night when Allah looks at His creation and asks: "Is there anyone seeking forgiveness so I may forgive them?"
That question is aimed at you personally. It is not asking for a perfect record or a grand performance. It is asking whether you are willing to turn.
Come to this night with an honest heart. Resolve what you have been avoiding. Pray what you can. Ask for what you need. And trust that the One who opens the door of forgiveness every night opens it especially wide on a night named for innocence.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Laylatul Baraat?
Laylatul Baraat is the 15th night of the month of Shaban, one month before Ramadan. It is also called the Night of Forgiveness or the Night of Records. Some hadith mention it as a night when Allah looks upon His creation with mercy and forgives many.
Is Laylatul Baraat mentioned in the Quran?
Scholars differ. Some traditional scholars link it to Surah Ad-Dukhan (44:3), which mentions a blessed night when matters are decreed. The majority opinion, however, is that Surah Ad-Dukhan refers to Laylatul Qadr in Ramadan, not the 15th of Shaban.
How should I worship on Laylatul Baraat?
There is no specific prescribed prayer for this night. The most appropriate acts are: sincere dua and istighfar, voluntary prayer (tahajjud), Quran recitation, and removing enmity from your heart toward fellow Muslims.
Is fasting on the 15th of Shaban recommended?
Some scholars recommend fasting the 15th of Shaban based on general hadith about fasting the white days (13th, 14th, 15th of every month) and the virtue of fasting in Shaban overall.
What sins prevent forgiveness on Laylatul Baraat?
The hadith from Ibn Majah mentions two categories excluded from the general forgiveness: those who commit shirk (associating partners with Allah) and those who carry enmity and hatred toward other Muslims. The second category is a serious reminder to settle disputes before this night.
