In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Another year has passed. Your spouse deserves to be honored, your marriage deserves acknowledgment, and somewhere in the back of your mind, the question you have been pushing away has come back: is celebrating a wedding anniversary haram?
You are not asking because you want to find a loophole. You are asking because you are trying to build a marriage โ and a life โ that actually pleases Allah. That discomfort you feel when the question surfaces is not weakness. It is your taqwa at work.
This article gives you the honest answer and, more importantly, shows you how to truly honor your marriage in a way that will outlast any annual celebration.
The Quick Answer
The majority scholarly position is that formal wedding anniversary celebrations โ treated as recurring annual rituals โ are impermissible due to bid'ah (religious innovation) and tashabbuh (imitation of non-Islamic customs). A smaller group of scholars permits simple, halal expressions of love on that day.
What is clear: expressing gratitude to Allah for your marriage, loving your spouse deeply, and honoring your relationship is not only permissible โ it is highly encouraged.

"And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy." โ (Surah Ar-Rum, 30:21)
The blessing of a good marriage is from Allah. Directing your gratitude to Him โ rather than to a cultural ritual โ is the Islamic response to that blessing.
What the Quran and Sunnah Say
The key principles at play are bid'ah and tashabbuh. Wedding anniversary celebrations as practiced in the modern world originate in Western, non-Islamic culture. They have no basis in the practice of the Prophet ๏ทบ, his companions, or the early generations of Islam.
The Prophet ๏ทบ said:
"Every innovation is going astray, and every going astray is in the Fire." โ (Sahih Muslim 867)
He also said:
"Whoever imitates a people is one of them." โ (Abu Dawud 4031)
The concern is not that loving your spouse is wrong โ quite the opposite. The concern is modeling the form of that love on practices that did not come from Islamic guidance. The Sunnah is full of ways to express love in marriage: the Prophet ๏ทบ would race with Aisha, eat from the same plate, call her by a loving nickname. None of it was structured around an anniversary.

Why This Is Actually Hard
Your nafs knows exactly how to argue here: "It is just dinner. It is just a gift. Marriage is already halal โ what could be wrong with celebrating it?"
And here is the challenge: the argument is not entirely wrong in isolation. The dinner is halal. The gift is halal. The love is not only halal but encouraged. The issue is the pattern โ the ritual of annually marking a specific date as a required celebration, borrowed wholesale from a cultural tradition that did not come from the Sunnah.
The social pressure is also real. Your family expects it. Instagram shows you everyone else's anniversary posts. Non-Muslim colleagues talk about their celebrations. And beneath all of this is a genuine desire to feel that your marriage is being honored, that your years together matter, that you and your spouse are seen.
That desire is beautiful. The question is where you direct it.
What to Do Instead โ Practical Steps
The Islamic tradition does not leave a vacuum. There are powerful, Sunnah-grounded ways to honor your marriage that will mean far more in the long run than any annual ritual.
1. Make a special dua together on that date
The Prophet ๏ทบ taught a dua for after the wedding night that asks Allah for blessing in the marriage. Return to that dua on meaningful dates. Sit together, make dua for each other, thank Allah for the years you have shared. This is more powerful than any restaurant reservation.
ุงููููููู ูู ุจูุงุฑููู ููููุง ูููู ูุง ุฑูุฒูููุชูููุง ููุจูุงุฑููู ููููุง ููููู
"Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana wa barik lana fih"
"O Allah, bless us in what You have provided for us and bless us in it."
2. Give sadaqah together
On the date of your wedding, give charity together. Ask Allah to bless your marriage through that act of worship. This transforms a cultural milestone into an act of ibadah โ and the reward goes to both of you.
3. Express your love consistently, not just annually
The Prophet ๏ทบ did not wait for a special date to show love to his wives. He showed it daily โ in small acts, kind words, and genuine attention. Building that culture in your marriage is worth infinitely more than one annual celebration.
4. Write a private letter of gratitude
Writing to your spouse about what you are grateful for โ specific moments, ways they have supported you, duas you have made for them โ is deeply Islamic in spirit. It costs nothing, requires no ritual, and speaks directly to the heart.
5. Strengthen your daily Islamic practice together
Couples who pray together, do dhikr together, and read Quran together build something that no anniversary celebration can provide: a shared spiritual life that carries the marriage through every difficulty.

A Dua for Your Marriage
This dua was taught by the Prophet ๏ทบ for someone who marries:
ุจูุงุฑููู ุงูููููู ูููู ููุจูุงุฑููู ุนููููููู ููุฌูู ูุนู ุจูููููููู ูุง ููู ุฎูููุฑู
"Barakallahu laka wa baraka alayka wa jama'a baynakuma fi khayr"
"May Allah bless you and shower His blessings upon you and join you together in goodness." โ (Abu Dawud 2130)
Return to this dua whenever you want to honor your marriage. It is better than any toast.
Common Questions
What if my spouse really wants to celebrate our anniversary?
This is a real tension in many marriages, especially when one spouse is more observant or has come to Islam at a different stage of life. The answer is not to shut down your spouse's desire to feel honored โ it is to find halal ways to meet that need. A special halal meal, a meaningful gift, a private evening together โ none of this requires treating the date as a formal ritual. Wisdom here matters more than a fatwa.
Is it different if both husband and wife are fine with a simple celebration?
The question is not just whether both parties consent โ it is whether the practice itself aligns with Islamic principles. Mutual agreement does not make bid'ah permissible. What it does mean is that you can find creative, halal ways to acknowledge the milestone without formalising it as an annual ritual modeled on non-Islamic custom.
Are all scholars in agreement on this?
No. A minority of contemporary scholars take a more permissive view, arguing that a simple halal gathering to honor a marriage is not the kind of bid'ah that was prohibited, since it is not a religious ritual. You will find this position among some modern scholars who distinguish between religious innovation and cultural practice. The majority, however, lean toward caution. For similar discussions, see is celebrating birthdays haram and is celebrating Christmas haram.
What about the children โ is it confusing for them to not celebrate?
Be honest and age-appropriate with your children. "We honor our marriage every day by loving each other and thanking Allah โ not by marking one specific date." Then live that out. Children who see their parents make dua together, treat each other with kindness, and express genuine gratitude grow up with a far richer model of marriage than one anniversary dinner a year could provide.
Moving Forward
Whether celebrating a wedding anniversary is haram has a nuanced answer โ the majority scholarly view leans toward impermissibility for formal, ritualistic celebrations, while expressing love and gratitude in your marriage any day is not only permitted but encouraged.
The more important question is: what kind of marriage are you building? An Islamic marriage is one anchored in daily gratitude to Allah, daily kindness to your spouse, and shared worship that carries you both through life.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is celebrating a wedding anniversary haram in Islam?
Most scholars consider formal wedding anniversary celebrations impermissible due to bid'ah (religious innovation) and imitation of non-Islamic customs. However, honoring the marriage itself through gratitude to Allah, a halal family meal, or a heartfelt gift is not prohibited. The concern is with marking the date as a recurring ritual โ not with expressing love and gratitude in your marriage.
Can I take my spouse out to dinner on our anniversary?
A halal meal with your spouse is permissible any day of the year, including your anniversary. The issue scholars point to is treating a specific date as a prescribed annual celebration โ especially when that custom originates outside of Islamic tradition. Going out for dinner as an expression of love and appreciation, without framing it as a formal anniversary ritual, is a different matter.
Is giving a gift on a wedding anniversary permissible?
Giving gifts to your spouse is encouraged in Islam at any time โ the Prophet encouraged gift-giving to build love. The concern is not the gift itself but treating the anniversary as a ritualised occasion modeled on non-Islamic customs. If you choose to give a gift, do so as an act of appreciation to Allah for your marriage, not as a ritual marking of a date.
How do we honor marriage milestones in an Islamic way?
Express gratitude to Allah for your marriage through dua, give sadaqah together, renew your commitment to one another in private, and make special du'a for your children if you have them. You can acknowledge the blessing of your years together without framing it as a formal anniversary celebration.
Is having a wedding anniversary party haram?
A formal wedding anniversary party โ with the explicit purpose of marking the anniversary date as an annual celebration โ falls under what most scholars consider impermissible, due to its origins in non-Islamic customs and its resemblance to bid'ah. A gathering of family and friends for a halal occasion that happens to coincide with an anniversary is a different situation.
