بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) never abandoned witr prayer — not while traveling, not while sick, not in any condition of his life. In a faith built around five obligatory prayers, that kind of consistency about a non-obligatory prayer says something important.
Witr is the seal of the night. It is the last conversation before sleep. And for Muslims trying to build a real prayer life, learning to pray witr correctly — and making it a nightly habit — is one of the most meaningful steps you can take.
Why Witr Matters
The Prophet said:
أَوْتِرُوا يَا أَهْلَ الْقُرْآنِ
Aw-tiroo ya ahl al-Quran.
"Perform witr, O people of the Quran." — (Sunan Abi Dawud 1416)
He also said:
الْوِتْرُ حَقٌّ عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ
"Witr is a right upon every Muslim." — (Sunan Abi Dawud 1418)
The word witr (وتر) means "odd" — and the prayer ends on an odd number of rakats. This mirrors the nature of Allah: "Allah is Witr (odd/unique/one) and loves the odd" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6410).
Witr is your daily declaration that the night belongs to Allah. Even if you cannot do tahajjud. Even if your night prayer is minimal. This one prayer — done consistently — is an anchor.
How to Pray Witr: Step by Step
Option 1: Three Rakats with Two Tasleem (Recommended Method)
This is the method narrated from the Prophet (peace be upon him) in several hadith, and is a safe approach across all madhabs.
Rakat 1 and 2 — Standard Salah:
- Make intention for 2 rakats of witr
- Say Takbir (Allahu Akbar)
- Recite Al-Fatihah + a surah (e.g., Al-A'la in rakat 1, Al-Kafirun in rakat 2)
- Complete bow and prostration as normal
- After the second rakat, sit for Tashahhud and say Tasleem (Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi — both sides)
Rakat 3 — The Witr Rakat:
- Stand again and make intention for 1 rakat of witr
- Say Takbir
- Recite Al-Fatihah + a surah (Al-Ikhlas is strongly recommended for witr)
- After the surah, either:
- Perform ruku first, then rise and recite dua al-qunoot (Shafi'i/Maliki position)
- Or recite dua al-qunoot before ruku, while standing (Hanafi position)
- Complete the rakat normally and make final tasleem
Option 2: Three Rakats Connected (Hanafi Method)
- Make intention for 3 rakats of witr
- Pray 2 rakats normally with a full sitting (not tasleem) at the 2nd rakat
- Rise for the 3rd rakat, recite Al-Fatihah + surah
- After rising from ruku, recite dua al-qunoot
- Complete the prostrations and make final tasleem
The Surahs to Read in Witr
A specific Sunnah from the Prophet for the 3-rakat witr:
- First rakat: Surah Al-A'la (Surah 87)
- Second rakat: Surah Al-Kafirun (Surah 109)
- Third rakat: Surah Al-Ikhlas (Surah 112)
You can also add Surah Al-Falaq and An-Nas to the third rakat. This is the complete narrated practice.
Dua Al-Qunoot — The Heart of Witr
The qunoot dua taught by the Prophet to Al-Hasan ibn Ali:
Allahumma ihdini fiman hadayta, wa 'afini fiman 'afayta, wa tawallani fiman tawallayta, wa barik li fima a'tayta, wa qini sharra ma qadayta. Fa innaka taqdi wa la yuqda 'alayk. Wa innahu la yadhillu man walayta. Tabarakta Rabbana wa ta'alayt.
"O Allah, guide me among those You have guided, grant me wellbeing among those You have granted wellbeing, take me under Your care among those You have taken under Your care, bless me in what You have given, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed. Indeed You decree and none can decree over You. And none is humbled who You have befriended. Blessed are You, our Lord, and Exalted." — (Sunan Abi Dawud 1425)
You can also add personal dua at the end of qunoot before going into ruku. This is one of the best moments for personal supplication. For more supplications to make in witr, see duas for witr.

Making Witr a Habit — The Practical Part
The mechanics are simple. The discipline is the work. Here is how to make witr consistent:
Link it to Isha. The easiest approach is to pray witr immediately after Isha. You are already in prayer mode. Do not leave the prayer space — just add the 3 rakats. For most Muslims in their current season of life, this is the most realistic method.
Set a reminder. If you pray Isha and then get caught up in other things, witr will not happen. A simple phone reminder — "Time for Witr" — 15 minutes after your expected Isha time removes the friction.
If you have tahajjud aspirations. Then delay witr until after tahajjud. The Prophet's method was to pray tahajjud and seal it with witr just before Fajr. This is the highest practice. If you are not consistently doing tahajjud yet, pray witr after Isha until you are.
The "travel rule." The Prophet (peace be upon him) prayed witr on his camel while traveling. Whatever your situation, it can be done. See also how to make tahajjud a habit if you want to build the full night prayer practice.
What If You Already Prayed Witr, Then Want to Pray More?
If you prayed witr after Isha, then woke up later and wanted to pray tahajjud — you do not need to repeat witr. You can pray tahajjud (in pairs of 2 rakats) without re-doing witr. The Prophet was asked this and said: "There is no witr twice in one night" (Sunan Abi Dawud 1439).

Common Questions
Do I have to say qunoot in every witr?
Qunoot in witr is a confirmed Sunnah according to most scholars. The Hanafi school makes it wajib (mandatory). If you forget it, you perform Sajdat al-Sahw (prostration of forgetfulness) in the Hanafi view. In other schools, missing it does not invalidate the prayer. Learn the dua and make it a practice — but if you forget occasionally, your witr is still valid.
Can I use a different surah than Al-Ikhlas in the third rakat?
Yes. The Prophet recommended Al-Ikhlas, but you can recite other surahs. The narrated practice is specifically Al-A'la, Al-Kafirun, and Al-Ikhlas — following the Sunnah is always preferred if you have the choice.
What about 1-rakat witr? Is that valid?
Yes, 1 rakat of witr is valid according to the Shafi'i, Maliki, and Hanbali schools. The Hanafi school requires a minimum of 3 rakats (wajib). For those who want a minimal witr when very tired, 1 rakat after the 2-rakat salah is a valid option outside the Hanafi school.
Closing
The Prophet (peace be upon him) never gave up this prayer. Through every journey, every illness, every difficulty of his blessed life — the night ended with witr.
You do not have to be a scholar to build this habit. You do not need perfect conditions. You need the intention, the basic method, and the consistency to show up — even when you are tired, even when it feels like just one more thing.
Make witr your last prayer at night. Let the final word of your day be yours to Allah.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many rakats is witr prayer?
Witr can be prayed as 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9 rakats. The minimum is 1 rakat. The most common practice is 3 rakats. When praying 3 rakats, the majority of scholars say to pray 2 rakats, make tasleem, then pray 1 rakat separately — OR to pray all 3 consecutively with a sitting at the 2nd rakat (but no tasleem) then complete to 3. Both methods are narrated. The key is that witr ends on an odd number.
Is witr prayer obligatory or sunnah?
The majority of scholars (Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali) consider witr to be a confirmed sunnah (sunnah muakkadah) — highly recommended but not obligatory. The Hanafi school considers witr to be wajib (obligatory), which places it just below fard in importance. Either way, it should not be abandoned.
What is the dua of qunoot in witr?
Qunoot is a special dua recited in the last rakat of witr after rising from ruku (according to the Hanafi school) or before ruku (according to the Shafi'i school). The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught his grandson Al-Hasan the following dua: 'Allahumma ihdini fiman hadayta, wa 'afini fiman afayta...' (O Allah, guide me among those You have guided, grant me wellbeing among those You have granted wellbeing...) — (Sunan Abu Dawud 1425)
When should I pray witr?
Witr is prayed after Isha and before Fajr. The best time is the last third of the night (just before Fajr). However, if you are unsure you will wake up in time, it is better to pray it before sleeping. The Prophet said: 'Make witr your last prayer at night' (Sahih al-Bukhari 998), meaning it should be the final voluntary prayer you perform.
Can I pray witr after Fajr if I forgot?
If you missed witr due to sleep, you can make it up (as qada) during the day by praying it as an even number according to some scholars, or by praying it as normal according to others. The Hanafi school says to pray it even-numbered during the day (to distinguish qada from ada). The key point: do not abandon it just because you missed the night window.
