In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

There is a particular kind of heaviness that comes with missed prayers. Not just guilt โ something more specific. Like a debt you keep meaning to pay but the number keeps growing and you do not know where to start.
You have probably been there. Maybe it was one week during an illness. Maybe it was years when you were not practicing. Either way, the prayers are still there, waiting. And the good news โ the genuinely good news โ is that Islam gives you a path to pay back every single one.
This is how you do it.
Why This Matters
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
ู ููู ููุงู ู ุนููู ุตูููุงุฉู ุฃููู ููุณูููููุง ููููููุตููููููุง ุฅูุฐูุง ุฐูููุฑูููุง
Man nama 'an salatin aw nasiyaha falyusalliyaha idha dhakaraha.
"Whoever sleeps through a prayer or forgets it, let him pray it when he remembers it." โ (Sahih Muslim 684)
Notice the mercy in this hadith. The Prophet did not say "you are finished" or "you cannot make it up." He said: when you remember, pray it. That is the entire principle. Remembrance leads to action.
The obligation of salah is so serious that even if you are ill and cannot stand, you pray sitting down. If you cannot sit, you pray lying down. If you cannot pray lying down, you pray with your eyes. The point is: salah does not go away until it is fulfilled.
Who Needs to Pray Qada Salah
Qada (makeup) prayers apply when you:
- Missed a prayer by sleeping through it
- Forgot a prayer genuinely (not deliberately)
- Were traveling and missed prayers in a state of confusion
- Were unconscious or severely ill during prayer times
- Missed prayers during a period when you were not practicing Islam
If you deliberately skipped prayers knowing they were obligatory, you still need to make them up โ the sin of deliberately missing salah is separate from the obligation to make it up.
Women do not make up prayers missed during menstruation (hayd) or postnatal bleeding (nifas). This is a specific ruling based on the Sunnah.
Step-by-Step: How to Pray Qada Salah
Step 1: Make the Right Intention
Before every qada prayer, make a clear internal intention. You do not need to say it out loud, but your heart must be clear:
"I am praying the qada of [Fajr/Dhuhr/Asr/Maghrib/Isha] that I missed on [occasion]."
If you have many missed prayers and cannot remember the exact dates, you can intend "the first Fajr that I owe as qada" or "the oldest Maghrib I have outstanding." Scholars accept general intentions when the exact occasion is unknown.
Step 2: Know the Rakat Count
For qada, you only pray the fard (obligatory) rakats of each prayer. You do not need to add the sunnah prayers:
- Fajr: 2 rakats
- Dhuhr: 4 rakats
- Asr: 4 rakats
- Maghrib: 3 rakats
- Isha: 4 rakats
Step 3: Pray It Exactly Like the Original Prayer
Qada salah is performed in exactly the same way as the original prayer โ same standing, bowing, prostration, and tashahhud. The only difference is your intention. You pray aloud or silently based on the original prayer's rule (Fajr, Maghrib, Isha are aloud prayers; Dhuhr and Asr are silent).
If you are unclear on how to pray any of these correctly, see how to pray salah correctly for a step-by-step breakdown.
Step 4: Avoid the Forbidden Times
Do not pray qada during:
- Sunrise (approximately 15-20 minutes after the sun appears on the horizon)
- Solar noon (the few minutes when the sun is at its zenith)
- Sunset (until the sun fully sets)
Outside of these three windows, you can pray qada at any time โ including during other prayer times, and even if you have just prayed your current fard.
Step 5: Prioritize Order When Possible
The Prophet prayed missed prayers in order โ if he had missed Dhuhr and Asr, he would pray the qada of Dhuhr first. This order (tartib) is followed when it does not cause you to miss the current prayer's time. If following the order would make you miss the current prayer, pray the current prayer first.
Step 6: Build a System for Many Missed Prayers
If you have months or years of missed prayers, the approach is different from making up one prayer:
- First, stabilize your current prayers. Do not try to add qada while your current salah is inconsistent โ you will overwhelm yourself.
- Once your five daily prayers are stable, add one qada prayer before or after each current prayer.
- At five qada prayers per day, you make up approximately 150 prayers per month.
- Be patient. It is not a sprint; it is a commitment.

Making It a Habit โ The Hard Part
The mechanics of qada salah are straightforward. The hard part is consistency. Most people start strong and then the routine slips.
Here is what actually works:
Anchor qada to your current prayers. Decide that every time you pray Fajr, you will immediately pray one qada afterward. Do not deliberate โ just do it. Friction is what kills habits, so eliminate the decision point.
Track it visibly. Keep a simple count somewhere you can see it. Watching that number decrease day by day is genuinely motivating. The nafs responds well to visible progress.
Do not aim for perfection. If you miss a qada day, do not give up. That debt is still there, and so is the opportunity. Pick up where you left off.
Remember why. Every qada prayer you complete is a conversation you are having with Allah. You are saying: "I know I failed before. I am fixing it now." That honesty โ that return โ is itself a form of worship.
If you are rebuilding your prayer life more broadly, how to start praying again after years addresses the bigger picture of coming back to salah after a long absence. And how to pray on time consistently can help you prevent new prayers from being missed in the first place.
What Invalidates a Qada Prayer
The same things that invalidate your regular salah will invalidate qada salah:
- Loss of wudu (ablution)
- Speaking intentionally during the prayer
- Laughing aloud
- Moving excessively without need

Common Mistakes
Waiting until you have "enough time" to do it all at once. That moment never comes. One prayer made up today beats a thousand planned for later.
Not making a clear intention. A vague "I am praying" is not sufficient for qada. You need to identify which prayer you are making up.
Giving up after a missed day. One missed day does not erase progress. The debt is still there, and so is the path to pay it.
Thinking the sheer number makes it hopeless. The Prophet never told anyone their situation was too far gone. He said: when you remember, pray it.
The Deeper Lesson
There is something deeply Islamic about the concept of qada. It is built on the understanding that humans fail, that life interrupts, that obligations get missed โ and that Allah still gives you a path back. That path is not shame. It is action.
Every qada prayer you make up is a declaration: I am the person who fixes things, not just the person who regrets them. The nafs wants you to feel so guilty that you freeze. Islam tells you to pray.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is qada salah in Islam?
Qada salah refers to makeup prayers โ the obligatory prayers (fard) that were missed and must be made up later. The word qada (ูุถุงุก) means 'to fulfill an obligation.' If you missed Fajr because you overslept, that prayer remains a debt on you until you perform it as qada.
How do I pray qada salah for years of missed prayers?
If you have years of missed prayers, start by praying your current prayers on time first, then add qada prayers systematically. Many scholars suggest praying one or two extra prayers daily โ one before each current prayer is a common method. The goal is consistency: regular small steps rather than trying to do everything at once.
Do I pray qada salah the same way as regular salah?
Yes, mostly. You pray qada prayers with the same number of rakats as the original obligatory prayer (Fajr = 2 fard, Dhuhr = 4 fard, Asr = 4 fard, Maghrib = 3 fard, Isha = 4 fard). You do not need to pray the sunnah rakats for missed prayers โ only the fard. Make the intention (niyyah) as 'I am praying qada of [prayer name].'
Is there a time limit for making up missed prayers?
No, there is no expiry on qada prayers. A prayer debt stays with you until you make it up โ even if it takes years. The obligation does not disappear, but neither does the ability to fulfill it. Start today and be consistent.
Can I pray qada at any time of day?
Yes, with a few exceptions: you should avoid praying during the three forbidden times (at sunrise, at solar noon, and at sunset). Outside of these windows, you can pray qada at any time, including during other prayer times. If you have a lot of qada, you can pray multiple makeup prayers between your regular prayers.
