In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Warm hands held gently in another's hands in soft morning light, representing kindness and care for parents

You already know you should be good to your parents. Islam has told you this your whole life. The Quran repeats it so many times that you can quote it from memory.

Knowing it is not the problem. The problem is what happens when you are tired, when they say something that irritates you, when the relationship has years of complexity behind it โ€” and you still have to show up with kindness.

That is where the real practice is. Not in the knowledge of the ruling, but in the daily habit of actually doing it.

Why This Matters More Than You Think

The Quran places birr al-walidayn (ุจูุฑูู‘ ุงู„ู’ูˆูŽุงู„ูุฏูŽูŠู’ู†ู) โ€” goodness to parents โ€” directly alongside worshipping Allah alone. This pairing in Surah Al-Isra is not accidental:

ูˆูŽู‚ูŽุถูŽู‰ูฐ ุฑูŽุจูู‘ูƒูŽ ุฃูŽู„ูŽู‘ุง ุชูŽุนู’ุจูุฏููˆุง ุฅูู„ูŽู‘ุง ุฅููŠูŽู‘ุงู‡ู ูˆูŽุจูุงู„ู’ูˆูŽุงู„ูุฏูŽูŠู’ู†ู ุฅูุญู’ุณูŽุงู†ู‹ุง

Wa qada rabbuka alla ta'budu illa iyyahu wa bil-walidayni ihsana

"Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you show excellence (ihsan) to parents." โ€” (Surah Al-Isra, 17:23)

Notice: not just kindness (rifq), but ihsan โ€” excellence. The standard is high on purpose.

The Prophet ๏ทบ was asked which deed is most beloved to Allah. He said: "Prayer at its proper time." Then what? "Being dutiful to parents." Then what? "Jihad in the way of Allah." (Sahih Bukhari 527)

Birr al-walidayn outranks fighting in the path of Allah. If you need a measure of its weight, that is it.

Step-by-Step: Building Kindness as a Daily Practice

Good intentions are not enough. Kindness to parents โ€” especially when the relationship is complicated or you live far away โ€” requires intentional habits. Here is how to build them.

Step 1: Audit Your Current Practice

Before improving, be honest about where you are. Ask yourself:

  • How many times did I call or visit this week?
  • Was my tone respectful in our last conversation?
  • Did I help with something practical this month without being asked?
  • When did I last make dua specifically for them by name?

No judgment. Just baseline.

Step 2: Set a Non-Negotiable Communication Ritual

The most common failure in birr al-walidayn is not malice โ€” it is drift. Life gets busy. Weeks pass. Calls get postponed. And then suddenly you realize you have not spoken to a parent in three weeks.

Pick a day and time. Tuesday evening. Saturday morning. Whatever works. Put it in your calendar and treat it like a salah time โ€” non-negotiable unless genuinely unavoidable.

When you call, ask real questions. "How are you feeling? How is your knee? Did the appointment go well?" Presence, not just contact.

Step 3: Handle Your Reactions โ€” Before You React

The Quran forbids even saying "uff" (Surah Al-Isra, 17:23) โ€” the mildest verbal expression of displeasure. This is not because parents are always right. It is because the relationship calls for extraordinary self-control.

When something irritates you in a conversation with a parent:

  • Pause before responding (even three seconds changes what you say)
  • Lower your voice instead of raising it
  • Use "I understand" before disagreeing
  • If you need to end the conversation: "I'll call you back later, I need a moment." Then actually call back.

This is where how to control anger as a Muslim becomes directly relevant. The nafs wants to respond. The deen asks you to manage it.

Step 4: Help Without Being Asked

The Prophet ๏ทบ described a man who lived to serve his parents and then asked: "Will this person enter Jannah?" He was told: yes, but only if they died while he was still serving them. (Sahih Muslim 2549)

Proactive help is different from reactive help. Reactive help is what you do when asked. Proactive help is noticing needs before they are spoken.

Pay a bill before they mention it. Arrange a ride before they need one. Fix something around their house without them having to ask. This is the quality of birr the Prophet ๏ทบ demonstrated and described.

Step 5: Make Dua for Them Daily

The Quran gives you the dua:

ุฑูŽู‘ุจูู‘ ุงุฑู’ุญูŽู…ู’ู‡ูู…ูŽุง ูƒูŽู…ูŽุง ุฑูŽุจูŽู‘ูŠูŽุงู†ููŠ ุตูŽุบููŠุฑู‹ุง

Rabbi arhamhuma kama rabbayani saghira

"My Lord, have mercy on them both as they raised me when I was small." โ€” (Surah Al-Isra, 17:24)

Say this dua daily. After Fajr. After salah. Attach it to a specific time so it does not disappear into intention. The dua for parents covers this and related supplications in full.

Step 6: Spend Time โ€” Not Just Money

Financial support for parents is important, but the Prophet ๏ทบ warned that some people will give wealth but withhold presence. Both are part of birr. Sitting with an aging parent, watching something with them, eating a meal together โ€” these acts of presence carry enormous weight.

Make specific time โ€” not leftover time โ€” for your parents.

Making It Stick: The Habit Science

The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "The most beloved deeds to Allah are the most consistent ones, even if they are small." (Sahih Bukhari 6465)

Birr al-walidayn is not a single act. It is a lifelong practice of small, consistent kindnesses. The habit framework that works:

Anchor: Attach your weekly call to something you already do โ€” right after Jumu'ah salah, or before your Sunday meal. The anchor makes it automatic.

Start small: Even five minutes weekly is better than an annual grand gesture. Consistency over intensity.

Track it: When you can see your streak of regular contact, the nafs is less likely to rationalize skipping. What gets measured gets maintained.

The how to be humble in islam practice directly supports birr โ€” because humility is what makes sustained service possible without resentment.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Waiting for a "good moment." There is never a perfect time. Make contact consistently and let the relationship warm through regularity.

Performing birr only when watched. Sincere kindness to parents is a private act. The Prophet ๏ทบ said the pleasure of Allah is in the pleasure of parents โ€” not the pleasure of the community watching you help them.

Confusing birr with agreement. You can disagree with your parents respectfully. Birr does not mean saying yes to everything. It means maintaining your conduct even when your position differs from theirs.

Letting guilt replace action. Feeling guilty about neglecting parents is not the same as doing better. Convert guilt into a specific first step: make the call today.

Common Questions

Do my obligations to parents change if they are elderly or unwell? They intensify. The Quran specifically addresses the case of old age โ€” "Whether one or both of them reach old age in your care, do not say to them a word of contempt." (Al-Isra, 17:23) The harder it is to care for them, the greater the reward. The dua for ill parents is relevant here.

What if a parent has passed away? Birr to deceased parents includes making dua for them, giving sadaqah on their behalf, maintaining their friendships, honoring their debts, and seeking forgiveness on their behalf. The Prophet ๏ทบ confirmed these acts reach the deceased parent.

What if my parents are non-Muslim? The Quran explicitly says to accompany them with ma'ruf (appropriate goodness) even if you cannot follow them in their beliefs. Birr is not conditional on religion.

Start Today, Not When It Is Easier

The relationship with your parents will not get simpler over time. Their needs will increase. The nafs will find more reasons to delay. The time for birr al-walidayn is now, in whatever small form is available to you today.

Make one phone call. Send one message. Help with one task. Say one prayer for them. That is birr. Do it today.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Islam say about being kind to parents?

The Quran places kindness to parents immediately after worshipping Allah alone โ€” in Surah Al-Isra (17:23), Allah commands: 'Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you be kind to parents.' This pairing is deliberate. The Prophet ๏ทบ was asked which deed is most beloved to Allah, and responded: 'Prayer at its proper time, then being dutiful to parents, then jihad in the way of Allah.' (Sahih Bukhari 527)

What is birr al-walidayn in Islam?

Birr al-walidayn (ุจูุฑูู‘ ุงู„ู’ูˆูŽุงู„ูุฏูŽูŠู’ู†ู) means goodness, righteousness, and dutiful kindness toward one's parents. It is one of the most strongly emphasized obligations in Islam โ€” mentioned repeatedly in the Quran alongside Tawhid. Birr includes financial support, emotional care, respectful speech, spending time with them, and making dua for them.

What if my parents are non-Muslim โ€” do I still have to be kind to them?

Yes. The Quran explicitly addresses this in Surah Luqman (31:15): 'If they urge you to associate with Me something of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them โ€” but accompany them in this world with appropriate kindness.' You do not follow them in disbelief, but you maintain birr โ€” kindness, care, and respect โ€” regardless of their religion.

How do I be kind to parents when the relationship is difficult?

The Quran uses the word 'uff' โ€” the softest expression of displeasure โ€” as the example of what not to say to parents (Al-Isra, 17:23). This sets a high bar. When the relationship is genuinely difficult, birr means: lower your voice, do not argue, say the minimum necessary when tension is high, and return when you have calmed down. It does not mean tolerating abuse โ€” but it does mean managing your reactions with extraordinary care.

What are the benefits of being kind to parents in Islam?

The Prophet ๏ทบ said: 'The pleasure of Allah is in the pleasure of the parents, and the anger of Allah is in the anger of the parents.' (Tirmidhi 1899) Being dutiful to parents is connected to barakah in rizq, long life, and entrance to Jannah. The Prophet ๏ทบ specifically said whoever wants his rizq expanded and his lifespan lengthened should maintain ties of kinship โ€” starting with parents.
