In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

An open Quran beside prayer beads in soft morning light, representing continued spiritual connection during menstruation

Women do not pray during their period in Islam. That is the ruling โ€” clear, unanimous across all four madhabs, and established directly from the Prophet ๏ทบ.

No qada (make-up prayers) are required either. The missed salah from menstruation simply do not need to be prayed later โ€” unlike missed fasting, which must be made up.

This is the baseline. What follows explains why, what is still open to you, and how to maintain spiritual momentum through a period when formal salah is paused.

The Evidence

The ruling traces directly to the Prophet ๏ทบ. He told Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh:

"When the menstrual period comes, leave prayer." โ€” (Sahih Bukhari 306)

And on the question of qada, the companion Muadha asked Aisha (ra): "Why does the menstruating woman make up fasts but not prayers?" Aisha replied: "Are you a Haruriyya (Kharijite)?" โ€” meaning this is not a matter for debate. She then said: "We used to have our period in the time of the Prophet ๏ทบ. We were commanded to make up fasts but were not commanded to make up prayers." (Sahih Muslim 335)

This is the definitive evidence on both questions: no prayer during hayd, no qada afterward.

The wisdom scholars mention: salah comes five times a day. Making it up over the course of years of menstruation would be an extreme burden. The Prophet ๏ทบ characterized his deen as one of ease (yusr), not hardship. This ruling is one of its most direct expressions of that.

The Details and Common Cases

Hayd versus Istihadha

Hayd: Regular menstrual bleeding. Prayer is not performed.

Istihadha: Irregular/abnormal bleeding that is not part of the menstrual cycle (e.g., bleeding from a medical condition, spotting between cycles). A woman with istihadha makes wudu for each prayer and prays normally. The Prophet ๏ทบ explicitly told Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh โ€” who had istihadha โ€” to leave prayer only for her regular period's days, and to pray the rest of the time. (Sahih Bukhari 228)

How to tell the difference: If you know your regular cycle, hayd is that period. Bleeding outside of it, or lasting beyond your normal cycle length (most scholars say beyond fifteen days), becomes istihadha. Consult a knowledgeable scholar if your situation is irregular.

When Does Hayd End?

Prayer resumes only after:

  1. The bleeding has completely stopped
  2. Ghusl has been performed properly

You cannot pray with just wudu after hayd โ€” the full ghusl is required. The dua for ghusl after periods walks through the complete purification.

Partial Days

If hayd ends during the day and you perform ghusl, the question arises: which prayers must you pray for that day? The majority position (Shafi'i, Hanbali) says you pray Dhuhr and Asr if purity is achieved before Asr time ends (since Asr's time encompasses both), and Maghrib and Isha similarly. Check with a scholar from your madhab for your specific situation.

What If Doubt Remains?

Treat brown or yellowish discharge that appears at the end of your period โ€” and within your normal cycle โ€” as part of hayd. The scholars generally say to wait for white discharge (qussah baydah) as the sign of complete purity before considering the period ended. When in genuine uncertainty, apply your best judgment and note that uncertainty does not suspend your obligation to pray once you believe purity has returned.

Do Not Let Doubt Win โ€” or Let the Break Break You

Here is the challenge this ruling creates for many Muslim women: the break in salah, repeated monthly, can become a break in overall routine and iman.

You stop salah during your period. You stop waking for Fajr. You drift from the rhythm. Then when your period ends and ghusl is done, restarting feels harder than it should.

This is a real pattern, and it is worth naming. Your nafs will use the permissible break as an excuse for a larger spiritual retreat. Do not let it.

The key is maintaining alternative worship throughout. Prayer is paused. Dhikr is not. Dua is not. Listening to Quran is not. The relationship with Allah is continuous โ€” only the formal ritual of salah is temporarily suspended.

Wa idha sa'alaka 'ibadi 'anni fa-inni qarib

"And when My servants ask you about Me โ€” indeed I am near." โ€” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:186)

Allah's nearness is not conditional on ritual purity. He is near during your period. Speak to Him. Make dua. Do dhikr. Keep the connection alive so that when salah returns, you slide back in rather than climbing back in.

Common Questions

Can I still do morning and evening adhkar during my period? Yes. The morning and evening adhkar are dhikr, not salah. There is no prohibition on them during menstruation. Keeping your how to do morning adhkar routine during your period is actively encouraged โ€” it maintains the rhythm.

Can I sit in the masjid during my period? There is scholarly difference. The Hanbali and some Shafi'i scholars permit sitting in the masjid during hayd as long as there is no fear of uncleanliness. The Hanafi and Maliki schools traditionally prohibit it. Know your madhab's position.

What about reading Quran on a phone? Many contemporary scholars โ€” including the Permanent Committee of Saudi Arabia and others โ€” permit reading Quran from a phone or tablet during hayd, as the phone is not considered a mushaf. This is the more widely adopted contemporary position.

Can I make dua in any language? Yes. Dua has no restriction by language or by state of ritual purity. You can make dua in English, Arabic, or any language, at any time, in any condition. The can you make dua in english article covers this fully.

The Ruling Is Mercy

The Islamic ruling on menstruation and prayer is a mercy โ€” not a stigma, not a punishment, not a sign of lesser status. The Prophet ๏ทบ interacted normally with his wives during their periods, shared meals, was gentle, and made no indication of spiritual diminishment.

Your relationship with Allah does not have a "closed" sign during your period. The formal ritual is paused. Everything else remains open.

Use that time well. Make dua. Do dhikr. Read. Listen to Quran. Return to salah at the first moment of purity and step back into the rhythm as if you never left โ€” because in the ways that matter most, you have not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can women pray during their period?

No. The scholarly consensus across all four madhabs is that salah is prohibited during menstruation (hayd). The ruling comes directly from authentic hadith โ€” the Prophet ๏ทบ told Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh to leave prayer during her period. Missed prayers during menstruation are not made up (no qada). This is a mercy, not a punishment.

Do women make up missed prayers from their period?

No. Unlike fasting (which must be made up after Ramadan), prayers missed during menstruation do not require qada. This is established by consensus based on the narration of Muadha: 'We used to have our period in the time of the Prophet ๏ทบ. Were we commanded to make up prayers? We were not commanded to make up prayers.' (Sahih Muslim 335)

Can women read Quran during their period?

There is scholarly difference on this. The majority view (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali) traditionally prohibits reciting Quran directly from a mushaf during hayd. However, many contemporary scholars permit recitation from memory or from a phone screen. Listening to Quran is agreed to be permissible. Many scholars advise that recitation from memory for learning/maintenance is permissible.

What can a woman do spiritually during her period?

Many acts of worship remain open during menstruation: making dua (supplication) โ€” no restriction at all, dhikr (remembrance of Allah), listening to Quran, reading Islamic books, attending circles of knowledge, making istighfar, sending salawat on the Prophet ๏ทบ, and sitting in the masjid (according to some scholars). Spiritual connection is not cut off.

When can a woman pray again after her period?

A woman may pray again after her menstrual bleeding has fully stopped and she has performed ghusl (full ritual purification). The ghusl must be complete โ€” washing the entire body with water reaching all areas including the scalp. After ghusl she is in a state of tahara and can pray, fast, and perform all acts of worship normally.
