In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

There are people who stayed up at night so you could sleep. Who went hungry so you could eat. Who worried about you when you did not even know what worry meant. Your parents gave you everything before you could give anything back. And now โ whether they are sitting in the next room or resting in their graves โ there is one thing you can give them that costs you nothing but means everything.
Your dua.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught us that making dua for your parents is not just a nice thing to do. It is one of the most powerful acts of worship a Muslim can perform. And for those whose parents have passed away, it may be the only thing still reaching them.
The Dua
The most powerful dua for parents comes directly from the Quran:
ุฑููุจูู ุงุฑูุญูู ูููู ูุง ููู ูุง ุฑูุจููููุงููู ุตูุบููุฑูุง
Rabbi irhamhuma kama rabbayani saghira.
"My Lord, have mercy upon them as they raised me when I was small." โ (Surah Al-Isra, 17:24)
When to say it: After every salah. During sujood. In your morning adhkar. Before you sleep. There is no wrong time to make dua for the people who gave you life.
The full verse adds context: Allah commands you to lower the wing of humility to your parents and to make this dua from the depth of your mercy. The image of "lowering the wing" is stunning โ it means to be gentle, protective, and humble toward them, the way a bird shelters its young.
A second essential dua for parents:
ุฑูุจููููุง ุงุบูููุฑู ููู ููููููุงููุฏูููู ููููููู ูุคูู ูููููู ููููู ู ูููููู ู ุงููุญูุณูุงุจู
Rabbana ighfir li wa liwalidayya wa lilmu'mineena yawma yaqumul hisab.
"Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers on the Day the account is established." โ (Surah Ibrahim, 14:41)
This is the dua of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him). Notice that he included his parents alongside himself and all believers. That is the level of selflessness Islam teaches โ even in your most private prayers, your parents have a place.
The Story Behind It
The verse in Surah Al-Isra (17:23-24) comes in a passage where Allah lists the most important commandments โ right after commanding the worship of Allah alone. The second commandment? Kindness to parents. Not salah. Not charity. Not hajj. Parents.
ููููุถูููฐ ุฑูุจูููู ุฃููููุง ุชูุนูุจูุฏููุง ุฅููููุง ุฅููููุงูู ููุจูุงููููุงููุฏููููู ุฅูุญูุณูุงููุง
"And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you show ihsan (excellence) to your parents." โ (Surah Al-Isra, 17:23)
A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and asked who deserves the best companionship. The Prophet answered: "Your mother." The man asked: "Then who?" He said: "Your mother." Again: "Then who?" He said: "Your mother." Only on the fourth time did he say: "Your father" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5971).
Three times for your mother. This is not casual emphasis โ it reflects the weight of what she endured: pregnancy, childbirth, nursing, sleepless nights, years of selfless care. Your dua for her is the least you can offer in return.
How to Make This Dua Part of Your Daily Life
Making dua for your parents should not be something you do only when you feel guilty or when they are sick. It should be as automatic as breathing.
After every salah:
- Before you finish your dhikr after prayer, say Rabbi irhamhuma kama rabbayani saghira
- This takes five seconds and can be done five times a day
- That is 35 dedicated duas for your parents every week โ minimum
During sujood:
- The closest a servant is to Allah is when they are in sujood (Sahih Muslim 482)
- Use this closeness to ask Allah for mercy on your parents
- Even one sincere dua in sujood carries immense weight
At special times:
- The last third of the night, when Allah descends to the lowest heaven
- Between the adhan and iqamah
- On Fridays, especially the last hour before Maghrib
- While fasting, especially at the moment of breaking fast
If your parents have passed away:
- Your dua is still reaching them. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "When a person dies, their deeds are cut off except for three: ongoing charity, knowledge that is benefited from, and a righteous child who makes dua for them" (Sahih Muslim 1631)
- Give charity on their behalf
- Perform Hajj or Umrah on their behalf if possible
- Read Quran and dedicate the reward to them

Common Questions
What if my parents were not good to me?
This is a painful reality for some Muslims. Islam still commands kindness and respect โ but kindness does not mean accepting abuse. You can set healthy boundaries while still making dua for them. In fact, making dua for someone who hurt you is one of the most powerful acts of spiritual self-control. It heals your heart even as it benefits theirs.
Is it better to make dua for parents or give charity on their behalf?
Both are beneficial, and you should do both. The Prophet (peace be upon him) encouraged charity on behalf of deceased parents, and ongoing dua is one of the three deeds that never stop earning reward. Combine them: make dua daily and give charity regularly. Even a small amount counts.
My parents are alive and healthy. Do I still need to make dua for them?
Absolutely. Do not wait for illness or loss to start. The best time to build this habit is now โ when gratitude feels natural and the dua is one of happiness, not desperation. Your parents' well-being in this life and the next depends partly on your prayers for them.
Can children make dua for their parents too?
Yes, and teaching children to make dua for their parents is one of the best investments you can make. When a child says Rabbi irhamhuma kama rabbayani saghira, they are planting a seed that will grow into a lifelong habit. Start teaching this dua early โ it benefits the parents and builds the child's connection to daily worship.
Closing
Your parents gave you years of their lives. The least you can give them is seconds of your prayers. And those seconds โ sincere, consistent, offered to the One who controls all things โ can change their destiny in ways you cannot even imagine.
Whether your parents are in the room next to you or under the ground beneath you, your dua reaches them. Do not let a single day pass without raising your hands for the people who raised you.
Start after your next salah. Say the words. Mean them. And never stop.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best dua for parents in Islam?
The most well-known dua for parents is directly from the Quran: Rabbi irhamhuma kama rabbayani saghira โ My Lord, have mercy upon them as they raised me when I was small (Surah Al-Isra, 17:24). This dua acknowledges their sacrifice and asks Allah to repay them with His infinite mercy. It is recommended to say it daily, especially after every salah.
Can I make dua for my parents after they have passed away?
Yes, and it is one of the most important things you can do for them. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that when a person dies, their deeds are cut off except for three things, one of which is a righteous child who makes dua for them (Sahih Muslim 1631). Your dua continues to benefit them in their grave. This is a responsibility and a gift.
How often should I make dua for my parents?
There is no set limit, but making it a daily habit is ideal. Many scholars recommend saying the Quranic dua for parents after every obligatory prayer. You can also include them in your morning and evening adhkar, during sujood, and at special times like the last third of the night or on Fridays.
What if my relationship with my parents is difficult?
Islam still commands kindness to parents even if the relationship is strained. The only exception is if they command you to commit shirk โ even then, you must refuse the command but still treat them with kindness in worldly matters (Surah Luqman, 31:15). Making dua for their guidance and for the healing of your relationship is itself an act of worship that softens hearts.
Can I make dua for non-Muslim parents?
You can make dua for the guidance of living non-Muslim parents. However, making dua for forgiveness for deceased non-Muslims is not permissible according to the majority of scholars, based on Surah At-Tawbah 9:113. You can still honor their memory through charity and good deeds in their name while they are alive, and make dua for their guidance.
