In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

A traveler's silhouette seen from behind approaching a city at dawn, warm amber and green tones, mosque minarets in the distance

You land in a new city. You check into a hotel. You arrive at a new job, a new university campus, a new country. The unfamiliar surrounds you โ€” and with it, the quiet awareness that you are no longer on familiar ground.

The Prophet ๏ทบ understood this feeling. He traveled constantly โ€” to Madinah, to Mecca, to distant battlefields, to the homes of tribes he had never met. And he left us an exact supplication to say when we arrive somewhere new: a few words that, according to his promise, protect you until you leave.

The Dua When Arriving at a New Place

A'udhu bi kalimatillahi-tammati min sharri ma khalaq

"I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created."

โ€” (Muslim 2708)

The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Whoever alights somewhere and says: A'udhu bi kalimatillahi-tammati min sharri ma khalaq โ€” nothing will harm him until he departs from that place." (Muslim 2708).

This is a direct prophetic guarantee. The phrase kalimatillahi-tammati (the perfect words of Allah) refers to the Quran, to Allah's names, and to the totality of divine speech โ€” a protection that encompasses every kind of harm, seen and unseen, from the place itself, from its people, and from the shayatin it may harbor.

The Broader Travel Supplication

For the journey itself, the Prophet ๏ทบ taught a comprehensive dua when setting out:

Allahumma inna nas'aluka fi safarina hadha al-birra wat-taqwa, wa minal-'amali ma tarda

"O Allah, we ask You in this journey of ours for righteousness and taqwa, and for deeds that please You."

โ€” (Tirmidhi 3447)

The full travel dua continues, asking for ease, for the journey to be folded, and for safe return. Say it when you set out, and then say the arrival dua when you reach your destination.

The Story Behind This Dua

Khawlah bint Hakim ุฑุถูŠ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู†ู‡ุง reported that she heard the Prophet ๏ทบ teach this dua directly, explaining its specific protection. (Muslim 2708).

What makes this narration particularly striking is the specificity: "nothing will harm him until he departs." This is not a vague blessing โ€” it is a stated condition with a stated outcome. The Prophet ๏ทบ was not given to exaggeration. When he made a promise in the name of Allah's protection, the Companions took it seriously and practiced it consistently.

The Companions traveled extensively โ€” for trade, for Hajj, for jihad, for learning. They carried these duas with them the way we carry passports: as essential documents for navigating an unfamiliar world. The difference is that a passport opens borders; this dua opens divine protection.

How to Build This Dua Into Your Travel Routine

The challenge with this dua is that we tend to remember it when we are afraid โ€” in turbulent flights, in sketchy neighborhoods, in places that feel threatening. But the Sunnah teaches us to say it proactively, before anything goes wrong.

Say it the moment you arrive. When you step off a plane, get out of a car, check into a hotel room, or walk through the door of a new building โ€” say the dua. Not after you unpack, not after you settle in. The moment you arrive. This is when the protection begins.

Link it to your travel dhikr sequence. Good travel practice looks like: dua when leaving home, travel dua in the vehicle, the dua when arriving at your destination, and the entering dua when entering any specific building. These three duas chain together into a continuous spiritual protection from departure to arrival.

Make it automatic, not reactive. The nafs waits for danger to prompt supplication. The believer recalibrates to make dua the first response, not the last resort. Practice saying this dua in low-stakes situations โ€” arriving at the supermarket, checking into a gym, visiting a new shop โ€” until it becomes reflex.

Say it in hotels and temporary accommodation specifically. The Prophet's teaching about staying places applied directly to temporary lodging โ€” the exact situation of most travel. A hotel room is unknown space. Saying this dua upon entry, along with Ayat al-Kursi before sleep, transforms it from an anonymous commercial space into a place under Allah's protection.

Common Questions

Does this dua protect from all harm, including accidents and crime?

The hadith says "nothing will harm him" โ€” and scholars understand this to mean Allah creates conditions of protection when this dua is said sincerely. This does not mean the believer becomes invincible; it means Allah watches over them in a particular way. The believer still takes reasonable precautions โ€” the dua is not a substitute for good judgment.

I travel very frequently. Should I say this dua every time I check into a new hotel?

Yes, every time. "Until he departs from that place" suggests the protection is place-specific and resets with each new location. Make it as automatic as plugging in your phone when you arrive.

What if my journey involves multiple stops in one day?

Say the dua at each stop. If you are catching connecting flights and spending time in airports, say it upon arrival at each airport. If you are moving between multiple hotels in one trip, say it at each check-in. The protection covers each distinct place you alight.

Wherever You Go, You Are Never Alone

The believer who travels with these duas is never navigating an unfamiliar city alone. Every new street, every foreign city, every unknown neighborhood is territory where the same Allah who knows every tree and stone has been asked for protection. And He does not turn away that request.

Say it every time you arrive. Let it become the first thing you do when you step into somewhere new. The Prophet ๏ทบ made a promise โ€” and he kept all his promises.

Frequently Asked Questions

What dua should I say when entering a new city or place?

The Prophet taught: A'udhu bi kalimatillahi-tammati min sharri ma khalaq โ€” 'I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.' (Muslim 2708). Whoever says this upon arriving anywhere will not be harmed until they leave that place. This applies to hotels, new cities, unfamiliar neighborhoods, and anywhere you are stopping.

Is there a different dua for different types of new places?

The dua from Muslim 2708 covers all places. The Prophet also taught a broader travel dua (Tirmidhi 3447) that covers the journey itself. When entering a specific home or building, Bismillah and the home-entering dua (Abu Dawud 5096) are additional protections. All three together create a comprehensive spiritual shield.

Do I need to say this dua every time I enter a new neighborhood or just new cities?

The hadith says 'whoever alights (arrives) at a place' โ€” which scholars apply broadly to any unfamiliar or new location where you are staying, not just cities. Business trips, hotel rooms, visiting relatives in a new area, moving to a new flat: all qualify. The protection lasts until you depart from that specific place.

What if I forget to say the dua when I arrive? Can I say it later?

Say it as soon as you remember. The intent and sincerity of the supplication matter more than the precise moment. Allah does not withhold His protection from someone who forgot and remembered โ€” He is Al-Ghaffar, the Most Forgiving. Build the habit so forgetting becomes rare.
