In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

There is a moment on every long journey โ€” usually around hour three of a flight, or somewhere on a motorway in the dark โ€” when you feel very small. Far from home. Disconnected from your routine. Alone with your thoughts in a way that rarely happens in the busyness of daily life.

That feeling is not accidental. Travel is designed to loosen you from the familiar so that what you carry inside becomes visible. For a Muslim, that moment of smallness is an invitation. It is when the dua for travelling stops being a formality and becomes something real.

The Sunnah Duas for Travelling

The Prophet ๏ทบ taught a layered system of remembrance for travel โ€” not just one dua, but a sequence that covers every stage of the journey.

Step 1 โ€” Before leaving home, recite Ayat al-Kursi:

ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ู ู„ูŽุง ุฅูู„ูŽูฐู‡ูŽ ุฅูู„ูŽู‘ุง ู‡ููˆูŽ ุงู„ู’ุญูŽูŠูู‘ ุงู„ู’ู‚ูŽูŠูู‘ูˆู…ู

"Allah โ€” there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence." โ€” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:255)

The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi when leaving his house, Allah assigns for him seventy thousand angels who pray for his forgiveness until he returns." (Ibn Hibban 793, graded hasan)

Step 2 โ€” When boarding your vehicle, say:

Bismillah, Alhamdulillah, subhanalladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila rabbina lamunqalibun

"In the name of Allah, all praise be to Allah. Glory to the One who has subjected this for us, and we could never have subdued it ourselves. Indeed, to our Lord we shall return." โ€” (Surah Az-Zukhruf, 43:13-14)

Step 3 โ€” At the start of the road, the full protection supplication:

Allahumma antas-sahibu fis-safar, wal-khalifatu fil-ahl. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min wa'tha'is-safar, wa ka'abatil-manzar

"O Allah, You are the Companion in travel and the Guardian of the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of travel and from seeing anything distressing." โ€” (Sahih Muslim 1342)

Staying Spiritually Protected During the Journey

The Prophet ๏ทบ knew the reality of travel: it wears you down. The Arabic phrase wa'tha' al-safar โ€” the hardships of travel โ€” is mentioned specifically in the dua because the Prophet ๏ทบ named what his companions actually experienced.

Modern travel has its own form of wa'tha': twelve-hour flights, delayed connections, jet lag that disrupts your salah times, hotel rooms that feel spiritually hollow. The dua does not change. But here is how to apply it in the modern context:

On the plane โ€” when turbulence hits: Do not reach for the armrest first. Reach for the dua. Hasbunallahu wa ni'malwakil โ€” "Allah is sufficient for me and He is the best Guardian" โ€” is the dua of Ibrahim ๏ทบ when he was thrown into fire. Turbulence is manageable in comparison.

Navigating salah while travelling: The Prophet ๏ทบ shortened prayers on journeys โ€” this is mercy, not laziness. Dhuhr and Asr can be combined; Maghrib and Isha can be combined. You do not need to find a prayer room for every salah. Salah on a plane in your seat, facing the approximate qibla, is valid. Keep your prayers.

When you feel homesick or anxious: Recite the dua for anxiety:

ุญูŽุณู’ุจูู†ูŽุง ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ู ูˆูŽู†ูุนู’ู…ูŽ ุงู„ู’ูˆูŽูƒููŠู„ู

"Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs." โ€” (Surah Al-Imran, 3:173)

The nafs during travel whispers: "You're unmoored, unprotected, alone." The dua answers: "I am with Allah, wherever I am."

Protecting Your Family While You Are Away

One of the most moving aspects of the Sunnah travel dua is the phrase: Allahumma antal-khalifatu fil-ahl โ€” "O Allah, You are the Guardian of my family."

When you travel, you leave people behind. Children. A spouse. Parents. The helplessness of being far away โ€” unable to protect or respond quickly โ€” is real. The Sunnah response is not to suppress that feeling. It is to transfer guardianship consciously and explicitly to Allah.

Before you leave:

  1. Recite Ayat al-Kursi over your home and family
  2. Recite the dua for protection and ask Allah specifically to guard those you leave behind
  3. Make the explicit intention: "I am placing my family under Your care, Ya Allah"

This is not superstition. It is surrender โ€” the highest form of tawakkul.

The Dua When You Return

The journey is not complete until you return and close the loop with remembrance. When the Prophet ๏ทบ would return from a journey, he would say at each elevated point:

ุขูŠูุจููˆู†ูŽ ุชูŽุงุฆูุจููˆู†ูŽ ุนูŽุงุจูุฏููˆู†ูŽ ู„ูุฑูŽุจูู‘ู†ูŽุง ุญูŽุงู…ูุฏููˆู†ูŽ

Ayibun, ta'ibun, abidun, li-rabbina hamidun

"Returning, repenting, worshipping, and praising our Lord." โ€” (Sahih Muslim 1342)

Then, upon entering your home, say the dua for entering home to complete the spiritual circle of the journey.

Common Questions

I missed some prayers while travelling because of scheduling difficulties. What do I do?

Make up the missed prayers (qada) as soon as possible. Allah knows the difficulty of travel. Tawbah is always open. Do not let one missed salah become two โ€” break the chain immediately.

Can I listen to the Quran during travel instead of reading it?

Yes. Listening to Quran with attention and reflection carries reward. Many scholars consider it a form of worship even when you cannot physically hold a mushaf. Use travel time for Quran audio.

My fellow travellers are non-Muslim. Should I say the duas silently?

Yes, silently or in a very quiet voice. You are not required to display your worship. The dua is between you and Allah, and it is equally powerful spoken inwardly.

What if I do not have wudu when I want to make dua during travel?

Dua does not require wudu. You can make dua in any state. Wudu is preferred for formal supplication but not obligatory for dua in general.

Every Journey Ends at Home

Travel is temporary. Every road eventually leads back. The Muslim who travels with dua on their lips and tawakkul in their heart arrives changed โ€” not just in location, but in closeness to Allah.

Say the duas at every stage. Let each boarding, each ascent, each uncertain moment be a chance to remember that you are never truly alone on the road.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the dua for travelling in Islam?

The main Sunnah dua for travelling includes the boarding dua from Surah Az-Zukhruf and a comprehensive supplication asking Allah for safety, ease, and the protection of your family. The Prophet (peace be upon him) also taught specific adhkar for ascending, descending, and returning home.

Is there a dua for safety during a long flight?

Yes. Say Allahu Akbar three times when boarding and ascending, recite Ayat al-Kursi for protection, and repeat Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal wakeel when feeling anxious. These are all established Sunnah practices applicable to all forms of travel including air travel.

What dua protects your family while you are away travelling?

The comprehensive travel dua from Sahih Muslim includes asking Allah to be the Khalifah (Guardian) of your family in your absence. You can also recite Ayat al-Kursi before leaving, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) described it as protecting those who recite it.

Should I say the dua out loud or silently when travelling in public?

You can say it silently or in a whisper. Dua does not require being spoken aloud. Moving your lips quietly is fine and helps maintain focus on the meaning even in busy public spaces like airports.

Is it permissible to shorten prayers while travelling?

Yes. When travelling a qualifying distance (approximately 80km or more), you may shorten the four-rakah prayers to two. This is a mercy from Allah and an established Sunnah. You may also combine Dhuhr with Asr and Maghrib with Isha when travelling.
