ุจูุณูู ู ุงูููู ุงูุฑููุญูู ูฐูู ุงูุฑููุญูููู ู
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Every journey you take is a gift you did not earn. The car that starts, the plane that lifts off, the road that holds โ none of it is guaranteed, and all of it operates by Allah's permission.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) understood this with total clarity. He never left for a journey without specific words, specific remembrance, specific surrender to the One who controls every road, every sky, every return.
Travel strips away the familiar. It puts you in conditions you cannot fully control. That vulnerability โ when embraced through dua โ becomes a doorway to tawakkul.
The Dua for Travel
The primary dua when boarding any vehicle or beginning any journey:
ุณูุจูุญูุงูู ุงูููุฐูู ุณูุฎููุฑู ููููุง ููุฐูุง ููู ูุง ูููููุง ูููู ู ูููุฑูููููู ููุฅููููุง ุฅูููู ุฑูุจููููุง ููู ููููููุจูููู
Subhanalladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila rabbina lamunqalibun.
"Glory be to the One Who has subjected this to us, and we could never have subdued it ourselves. And to our Lord we will surely return." โ (Surah Az-Zukhruf, 43:13-14)
This verse carries profound weight. When you say wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin โ "we could never have subdued it ourselves" โ you are acknowledging that the vehicle you are in, however sophisticated, operates by divine permission. You did not make the engine work. You did not hold the laws of physics in place. Allah did.
And the ending โ wa inna ila rabbina lamunqalibun โ "to our Lord we will surely return" โ is a quiet acknowledgment that every journey, ultimately, points toward the final journey. This is not morbid. It is clarifying.
A second dua that is often said alongside it:
ุงููููููู ูู ุฅููููุง ููุณูุฃููููู ููู ุณูููุฑูููุง ููุฐูุง ุงููุจูุฑูู ููุงูุชููููููู ููู ููู ุงููุนูู ููู ู ูุง ุชูุฑูุถูู ุงููููููู ูู ููููููู ุนูููููููุง ุณูููุฑูููุง ููุฐูุง ููุงุทููู ุนููููุง ุจูุนูุฏููู
Allahumma inna nas'aluka fi safarina hadhal-birra wat-taqwa, wa minal-'amali ma tarda. Allahumma hawwin 'alayna safarana hadha watwi 'anna bu'dahu.
"O Allah, we ask You in this journey of ours for righteousness, taqwa, and deeds You are pleased with. O Allah, make this journey easy for us, and shorten its distance for us." โ (Sahih Muslim 1342)
This is the comprehensive travel dua โ asking for spiritual protection, ease, and a safe return.
The Story Behind the Travel Dua
The Companion Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported the Prophet's travel routine in detail. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) settled onto his mount, he would say Allahu Akbar three times, then recite the travel dua, then end with:
ุงููููููู ูู ุฃูููุชู ุงูุตููุงุญูุจู ููู ุงูุณููููุฑู ููุงููุฎููููููุฉู ููู ุงูุฃููููู
Allahumma antas-sahibu fis-safar, wal-khalifatu fil-ahl.
"O Allah, You are the Companion in travel and the Caretaker of the family." โ (Sahih Muslim 1342)
Notice what this dua acknowledges: Allah is your travel companion. Not just a protector watching from a distance โ but present with you. Every hour in the sky, every mile on the road, every moment of the journey.
This transforms travel from an anxious experience into an act of companionship with Allah.
How to Build a Travel Dua Habit
Knowing the dua is easy. Having it ready at the exact moment of boarding โ when you are distracted, busy, perhaps nervous โ is a different skill. It requires advance preparation and genuine habit formation.
Pre-departure sequence (before leaving home):
- Say Bismillah when leaving your home
- Say: Tawakkaltu 'alallahi, la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah โ "I put my trust in Allah; there is no power or strength except with Allah." (Abu Dawud 5095)
- Make a farewell dua for those you are leaving behind: Astawdi'ukumullaha alladhi la tadi'u wada'i'uh โ "I entrust you to Allah, whose trusts are never lost."
At the vehicle:
- Say Bismillah when getting in
- Recite the travel dua (Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:13-14)
- Follow with the comprehensive travel dua if you know it
During the journey:
- When ascending (stairs, hills, takeoff): say Allahu Akbar
- When descending: say Subhanallah
- During turbulence or fear: recite Hasbunallahu wa ni'malwakil โ "Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs."
Memorization tip:
The boarding dua is 18 Arabic words. If you learn one phrase a day, you can memorize it in three days. Write it on your phone's lock screen for your next trip. See it before you travel. Say it when you board.

Travel as a Spiritual Practice
Islam does not separate the physical from the spiritual. Travel is not just logistics โ it is an opportunity.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Travel is a piece of punishment." (Sahih al-Bukhari 1804) โ meaning it is difficult, uncomfortable, and strips away ease. But this difficulty is precisely what makes it spiritually valuable. Discomfort breaks routine. Broken routine creates awareness. Awareness is the door to taqwa.
When you are in an unfamiliar place, in a seat at 35,000 feet, or on a road in the dark โ the illusion of control evaporates. You cannot scroll your anxiety away. You cannot distract yourself out of vulnerability. That is the moment the dua becomes real, not performative.
Use your journeys to build genuine tawakkul. Not the kind you declare in comfortable moments โ the kind you live in uncomfortable ones.

Common Questions
Do I say this dua in Arabic even if I don't understand it?
Yes โ the Arabic text carries special blessing, especially for a verse of the Quran. However, while learning, keep the English meaning in front of you and reflect on it every time you say the Arabic. Understanding the meaning deepens the dua from a ritual into a genuine spiritual act.
Is there a special dua for flying specifically?
No separate dua for flying exists in the Sunnah โ the travel dua from Surah Az-Zukhruf covers all transportation. Some scholars note that "We could never have subdued it ourselves" applies especially powerfully to flight, which humans cannot do without extraordinary, Allah-given capability. Use the same dua with that meaning in mind.
What if I'm traveling for something wrong โ does the dua still apply?
The travel dua is a general protection. However, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said the angels do not travel with one who travels for haram purposes. If you are traveling for something questionable, that is the more important thing to address โ seeking forgiveness and correcting the intention before asking for travel protection.
Can I say the travel dua on public transport?
Absolutely. Bus, train, subway, taxi โ any mode of transport. You can say it silently in your mind or in a low voice. You do not need to announce it or make it visible. The dua is between you and Allah.
Closing
Every journey you take is borrowed time in a borrowed vehicle on a road you did not build. Allah has subjected all of it to you โ sakhkhara lana โ and He can unsub it at any moment.
That is not scary. That is clarifying.
Say the travel dua with that awareness. Not as a ritual, but as a genuine acknowledgment: "I could never have done this without You. And I am returning to You in the end."
Safe journeys begin with those words.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the dua for travel in Islam?
The dua for travel is: Subhanalladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila rabbina lamunqalibun โ Glory be to the One Who has subjected this to us, and we could never have subdued it ourselves. And to our Lord we will surely return. This is from Surah Az-Zukhruf (43:13-14) and is said when boarding a vehicle or beginning a journey.
When exactly should I say the travel dua?
Say it at the moment you board a vehicle or begin traveling โ when you step into a car, board a plane, mount an animal, or start any mode of transport. The Prophet (peace be upon him) would say it when getting onto his mount. Say it at the beginning of the journey, not at the end.
Is there a specific dua for flying on an airplane?
The same travel dua applies to all modes of transport including planes. The Quran verse mentions Allah subjecting things to us โ this includes the miracle of flight. Some scholars add specific supplication for fear during turbulence. The core dua for travel covers all journeys by air, sea, or land.
What other duas should I say when traveling?
In addition to the boarding dua, the Prophet (peace be upon him) taught a complete travel dua sequence: a farewell supplication when leaving home, Allahu Akbar three times while elevated, and a comprehensive travel supplication for protection, righteousness, and an easy return. These are all detailed in the full Sunnah travel adhkar.
Should I say dua throughout the journey or just at the start?
Both. Say the boarding dua at the start. During the journey, especially when frightened or at takeoff, repeat it or say Hasbunallahu wa ni'malwakil. The Prophet (peace be upon him) also recommended saying Allahu Akbar when ascending and Subhanallah when descending. Stay in a state of remembrance throughout.
