In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

A person with hands raised in supplication at dawn, soft golden light streaming through, warm cream and green tones

You probably know the feeling. Things are going well โ€” a new job, a new relationship, good health, something you are quietly proud of โ€” and then, without warning, something shifts. It is hard to name, hard to explain, but something feels off.

Islam gives this a name: al-'ayn, the evil eye. And the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not dismiss it. He confirmed it, warned against it, and gave us specific words to protect ourselves from it.

The good news is that those words are not complicated. They are not reserved for scholars. They are for you, right now, today โ€” and they take less than five minutes to say.

The Dua

The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught a dua that covers all evil โ€” including al-'ayn:

ุฃูŽุนููˆุฐู ุจููƒูŽู„ูู…ูŽุงุชู ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ู ุงู„ุชูŽู‘ุงู…ูŽู‘ุงุชู ู…ูู†ู’ ุดูŽุฑูู‘ ู…ูŽุง ุฎูŽู„ูŽู‚ูŽ

A'udhu bi kalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq.

"I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created." โ€” (Sahih Muslim 2708)

When to say it: Every morning and evening, three times each. When you arrive at a new place. When something unsettles you. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said whoever says this will not be harmed by anything in that place until they leave.

He also taught a specific dua for seeking refuge for children โ€” the same one he recited for his grandsons Hasan and Husayn:

U'idhukuma bi kalimatillahit-tammah, min kulli shaytanin wa hammah, wa min kulli 'aynin lammah.

"I seek refuge for you both in the perfect words of Allah from every devil, every poisonous creature, and every evil eye that harms." โ€” (Sahih al-Bukhari 3371)

Source: This was the dua of Ibrahim (peace be upon him), which the Prophet (peace be upon him) revived for his family. Say it over your children every night before they sleep.

Finally, Surah Al-Falaq (113) and Surah An-Nas (114) โ€” known as the Mu'awwidhatayn, the two surahs of seeking refuge โ€” are your core daily protection against al-'ayn, envy (hasad), and all unseen harm. Recite them three times each morning and evening, blowing gently into your cupped hands and wiping over your body.

The Story Behind It

The Prophet (peace be upon him) was direct: "The evil eye is real, and if anything were to overtake the divine decree, it would be the evil eye" (Sahih Muslim 2188).

That statement is remarkable. In a religion that emphasizes that nothing happens outside of Allah's qadar, the evil eye is described as having a power so real that it comes closer to affecting destiny than almost anything else. That is not superstition. That is a serious spiritual reality that demands a serious response.

The Companions understood this. They knew that even unintentional admiration โ€” a glance without blessing โ€” could cause harm. The case of Sahl ibn Hunayf is well known: a man glanced at him while he was bathing, and Sahl fell gravely ill on the spot. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) was told, he instructed the man to perform ghusl (ritual washing) and pour the water over the afflicted person โ€” and Sahl recovered immediately.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) also practiced ruqyah โ€” Quranic recitation as healing โ€” for himself and his family. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that he would recite Al-Falaq and An-Nas, blow into his hands, and wipe over his body before sleeping. This was not a one-time emergency measure. It was a nightly habit.

How to Make This Dua Part of Your Daily Life

Protection from al-'ayn is not a crisis intervention. It is a daily practice โ€” like locking your door each night, not just when you hear a suspicious noise outside.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) maintained his morning and evening adhkar every single day without exception. That consistency was the shield. Here is how to build yours.

Morning routine (after Fajr):

  • Surah Al-Falaq and An-Nas โ€” three times each, blow into your hands and wipe over your body
  • A'udhu bi kalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq โ€” three times
  • Ayat al-Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:255) โ€” once

This takes roughly four minutes. Four minutes for a full day of spiritual armor.

Evening routine (after Asr or Maghrib):

  • The same as your morning routine
  • Add the dua specifically for protection from envy if you are going through a visible period of blessing โ€” a new job, a new home, a milestone people can see

For your children and family:

Say the dua of Hasan and Husayn over your children before they sleep. Place your hand on their head. Say: U'idhukuma bi kalimatillahit-tammah, min kulli shaytanin wa hammah, wa min kulli 'aynin lammah. It takes ten seconds and it is the same protection the Prophet (peace be upon him) gave to the people he loved most.

When you admire something:

Say Masha Allah โ€” "what Allah has willed" โ€” whenever you see something that impresses you, in yourself or someone else. This is not just a cultural expression. It is a prophetic instruction. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "If one of you sees something in himself or his brother that he admires, let him pray for blessing for it" (Ibn Majah 3509). Admiration without invoking Allah's blessing is how the evil eye is given, even by people who love you.

Build the streak. The hardest part of protection adhkar is not memorizing them. It is staying consistent when life is busy and nothing bad is happening. Track your morning and evening adhkar daily โ€” not because you are afraid, but because the Prophet (peace be upon him) did it as an act of gratitude and connection with Allah.

If you are building a practice of daily spiritual protection, these posts pair well with this one:

Dua for Protection โ€” the broader collection of prophetic protection duas, including Ayat al-Kursi, the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah, and the dua for leaving the house. Think of this as the complete spiritual security system.

Dua for anxiety โ€” when al-'ayn or hasad leaves you feeling unsettled, anxious, or spiritually depleted, the prophetic dua for anxiety and distress is what to reach for next. It addresses the emotional aftermath of harm directly.

Dua for Pain โ€” if you believe you have been affected and are experiencing physical or emotional harm, the Prophet's (peace be upon him) duas for pain and the practice of ruqyah are your next step. The Quran is both protection and healing.

The three work together: daily shields through adhkar, emotional relief through supplication, and healing through ruqyah. None of them require a scholar or a specialist โ€” just you, sincere intention, and the words the Prophet (peace be upon him) taught.

Common Questions

Can you give the evil eye to yourself?

Yes. Scholars explicitly mention this. If you look at yourself in the mirror with excessive self-admiration without saying Masha Allah, it is possible to give yourself the evil eye. This sounds strange to modern ears, but it makes sense theologically: the harm comes from a gaze of admiration disconnected from gratitude to Allah. The solution is the same โ€” say Masha Allah and make dua for blessing.

Is wearing blue beads or the hamsa hand permissible for protection?

No. Wearing any object โ€” a blue bead, a hamsa hand, a string, an amulet โ€” for the purpose of protection is prohibited in Islam. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever wears an amulet has committed shirk" (Musnad Ahmad 17440). Your protection comes from Allah alone, through the words He and His Prophet (peace be upon him) taught you. There is no barakah in an object โ€” only in the remembrance of Allah.

How many times should I recite the protection duas?

Follow the Sunnah amounts: Al-Falaq and An-Nas three times each in the morning and evening. A'udhu bi kalimatillahit-tammati three times morning and evening. Ayat al-Kursi once after each prayer and before sleep. Consistency at these amounts is worth more than occasional marathon sessions.

What is ruqyah and should I do it if I think I have been affected?

Ruqyah is the practice of reciting Quran and specific duas over oneself or another person for healing and protection. If you believe you have been affected by the evil eye, the scholars recommend: reciting Al-Fatihah, Ayat al-Kursi, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas over yourself while blowing into your cupped hands and wiping over your body. Do this consistently alongside your regular adhkar. You should also seek medical advice for any physical symptoms โ€” Islam encourages both.

Does the evil eye only come from enemies?

No. This is one of the most important things to understand. The evil eye can come from people who love you โ€” a parent, a friend, a spouse โ€” without any ill intent. The admiration itself, when not accompanied by invoking Allah's blessing, can cause harm. This is why the culture of saying Masha Allah and Allahumma barik matters so much. It is not about suspicion of others. It is about anchoring all admiration in gratitude to Allah.

Closing

The evil eye is real, and your protection from it is real too. It is not complicated, it is not reserved for the especially devout, and it does not require anything you do not already have access to.

Five minutes in the morning. Five minutes in the evening. The same words the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, over his family, every single day.

The goal is not to live in fear of the evil eye. The goal is to be so consistent with your adhkar that you simply do not need to worry about it โ€” because you are already protected. That kind of peace only comes from daily habit, not from a one-time emergency dua when something already feels wrong.

Start today. Say the words. Build the streak. Let Allah be your protection โ€” because He is the only one who actually can be.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the evil eye real in Islam?

Yes. The Prophet (peace be upon him) explicitly confirmed it: "The evil eye is real, and if anything were to overtake the divine decree, it would be the evil eye" (Sahih Muslim 2188). The evil eye โ€” al-ayn in Arabic โ€” is a real spiritual harm that can befall a person through the gaze of envy or admiration. Islam takes it seriously and provides specific duas for protection.

What is the best dua for protection from the evil eye?

The most comprehensive dua is: A'udhu bi kalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq โ€” "I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created" (Sahih Muslim 2708). Surah Al-Falaq (113) and An-Nas (114) are also specifically for seeking refuge from evil and envy. Reciting these morning and evening is your primary protection.

Can you give someone the evil eye without meaning to?

Yes, scholars agree that the evil eye can be given unintentionally โ€” even by someone who loves you. This is why the Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed: "If one of you sees something in himself or his brother that impresses him, let him pray for blessing for it" โ€” i.e., say Masha Allah and make dua. Admiration without blessing is the danger.

How do I know if I have been affected by the evil eye?

There is no definitive diagnosis, and you should not assume the evil eye is behind every hardship. However, if you experience sudden, unexplained illness, fatigue, or distress, scholars recommend performing ruqyah โ€” reciting Surah Al-Fatihah, Al-Falaq, An-Nas, and Ayat al-Kursi over yourself โ€” alongside seeking medical advice. The duas and consistent adhkar also serve as both prevention and healing.

What does 'Masha Allah' have to do with the evil eye?

Saying Masha Allah (what Allah has willed) when you see something you admire โ€” in yourself or others โ€” is a prophetic protection against giving the evil eye. It acknowledges that all good things are from Allah and invokes His blessing. It is a simple habit that can prevent harm. Many scholars also recommend saying Allahumma barik (O Allah, bless it) when admiring something.
