In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

The day has not started yet. Your phone has not been checked. The news has not hit. The obligations have not begun.
This is the window โ the few minutes after Fajr when you can set the frame of your entire day before the world fills it in. The Prophet (peace be upon him) understood this. He did not leave the morning to chance. He had a set of duas, adhkar, and practices that he did every morning with consistency โ and he told his Companions they were missing out on something enormous if they skipped them.
The morning dua is not a ritual to get through before the real day starts. It is the real day, starting right.
The Duas
The morning declaration โ said immediately after waking or after Fajr:
ุงููููููู ูู ุจููู ุฃูุตูุจูุญูููุง ููุจููู ุฃูู ูุณูููููุง ููุจููู ููุญูููุง ููุจููู ููู ููุชู ููุฅููููููู ุงููููุดููุฑู
Allahumma bika asbahna wa bika amsayna wa bika nahya wa bika namutu wa ilayka an-nushur.
"O Allah, by You we enter the morning and by You we enter the evening, by You we live and by You we die, and to You is the resurrection." โ (Abu Dawud 5068)
Sayyidul Istighfar โ the master supplication for forgiveness:
"O Allah, You are my Lord, there is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant, and I am upon Your covenant and promise to the best of my ability. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge before You Your favor upon me, and I acknowledge my sin, so forgive me โ for none forgives sins except You." โ (Bukhari 6306)
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever says this in the morning with certainty, and dies that day before evening, will enter Jannah."
The morning provision dua โ from the Prophet's post-Fajr practice:
ุงููููููู ูู ุฅููููู ุฃูุณูุฃููููู ุนูููู ูุง ููุงููุนูุงุ ููุฑูุฒูููุง ุทููููุจูุงุ ููุนูู ูููุง ู ูุชูููุจููููุง
Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.
"O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and accepted deeds." โ (Ibn Majah 925)
Recite the three Quls three times each โ Surah Al-Ikhlas (112), Al-Falaq (113), An-Nas (114). The Prophet said doing this is sufficient to protect you from everything. (Abu Dawud 5082)
The Story Behind It
The Prophet (peace be upon him) once said to his Companions about the morning and evening adhkar: "There is not a servant who says [these] in the morning and evening but that they protect him from everything that harms him." (Tirmidhi 3388)
There is also this: the Companions understood that missing the morning adhkar had a real spiritual cost. The morning was when you set your reliance. When you declared bika asbahna โ "by You we enter the morning" โ you were starting the day in surrender, not in self-reliance. Starting without that acknowledgment meant starting the day thinking the day belonged to you.
The Prophet also consistently prayed two Fajr sunnah rakahs even when traveling โ a practice he rarely skipped despite the general exemption for travel. The morning was that important to him. He would not begin the day without it.
How to Build a Morning Dua Routine
Most Muslims know they should do morning adhkar. Few do them consistently. The reason is almost always the same: there is no clear starting point, and life fills the gap before you get to them.
The framework: Fajr to street:
Morning adhkar are meant to be said between Fajr prayer and leaving the house โ or at minimum, before picking up your phone. That time window, however short, is the protected slot. Guard it.
Start with just three things:
If you currently do nothing, adding everything at once will not stick. Start with:
- Allahumma bika asbahna โ the morning declaration (one time)
- Sayyidul Istighfar โ once, slowly, meaning every word
- The three Quls โ once each (build to three each over time)
Total time: under three minutes. Do this for two weeks before adding anything else.
Add the provision dua next:
After two weeks, add Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an โ the morning provision dua the Prophet said after every Fajr. Now you have four elements and still only 5-7 minutes.
Protect the time physically:
Put your phone face-down or in another room until the adhkar are done. The morning adhkar and social media scrolling occupy the same slot in your morning โ one of them will win. Choose deliberately.
Track your streak:
The Prophet said: "The most beloved deeds to Allah are the most consistent ones, even if they are small." (Bukhari 6464) Your morning adhkar streak โ 7 days, 30 days, 90 days โ is not just discipline. It is evidence of what kind of mornings you have chosen. The longer the streak, the more identity-forming the habit becomes.

Related Duas
Dua for waking up: The morning dua pairs with the dua for waking up โ together they cover the transition from sleep to the start of the day as a complete spiritual handoff.
Dua for rizq: The Prophet's Fajr provision dua is covered in full in the dua for rizq guide โ understanding why that specific post-Fajr moment was his chosen time for it.
Dua for studying: If your mornings are for learning, pair the morning adhkar with the dua for studying โ starting the day spiritually and then asking for the knowledge that fills it.
Common Questions
Can I say morning adhkar after the sun has risen if I missed Fajr?
The morning adhkar window closes with the rising of the sun (Shuruq). If you missed Fajr, pray it as soon as you wake, then say the morning adhkar โ even if the technical window has passed, you can still say them as a qada (make-up) with the intention of following the sunnah. The key is to not just skip them because you are "late."
How long does the full morning adhkar routine take?
The complete routine from authentic sources takes about 10-15 minutes. For someone starting out, 5 minutes with the basics described above is sufficient and sustainable. Many Muslims find that as the habit forms, 10-15 minutes feels natural and they often add more.
What is the difference between morning adhkar and dua?
Adhkar are set formulas from the Quran and Sunnah โ you say specific words in specific forms. Dua is personal supplication โ you ask Allah in your own words for your own specific needs. A complete morning routine has both: the prophetic adhkar first (to set protection and gratitude), then personal dua (to ask for what is specific to your life). Together they are a full conversation with Allah.
Closing
Every morning is a new allocation of time and capacity from Allah. You did not earn it. You woke up because He permitted it.
The morning dua is the right response to that gift โ not the only right response, but the most important one. It takes less time than checking your news feed. It gives more than a news feed ever will.
Start tomorrow morning. Before the phone. Before the news. Just you and a few minutes of the Prophet's words.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the morning dua in Islam?
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said every morning: Allahumma bika asbahna wa bika amsayna wa bika nahya wa bika namutu wa ilayka an-nushur โ O Allah, by You we enter the morning and by You we enter the evening, by You we live and by You we die, and to You is the resurrection. (Abu Dawud 5068)
What are the best morning adhkar to recite?
The core morning adhkar include: Ayatul Kursi (once), Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas (three times each), Sayyidul Istighfar, and the morning dua: Allahumma bika asbahna. The full set takes 5-10 minutes and covers protection, gratitude, and connection to Allah.
When should I say the morning duas?
Morning adhkar are said after Fajr prayer, before leaving for the day. The ideal time is immediately after the Fajr sunnah prayer. The window extends until the sun fully rises (Shuruq), but the closer to Fajr the better.
What is Sayyidul Istighfar and why is it important in the morning?
Sayyidul Istighfar is the master supplication for forgiveness. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Whoever says it in the morning with certainty, and dies that day before evening, will enter Jannah. And the same applies in the evening. (Bukhari 6306)
Is there a short morning dua I can start with?
Yes: start with just Allahumma bika asbahna (Abu Dawud 5068) and the three Quls (Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas) three times each. That is five minutes maximum and covers the core bases: morning declaration, protection, and Quran. Build from there.
