In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

There is a particular kind of worry that comes with loving a child. You can wrap them in warmth, keep them fed, stay present โ€” and still feel the weight of all the things that are beyond your control. The evil eye, the spiritual harm, the world they will eventually walk out into on their own.

The Prophet ๏ทบ understood this. He did not leave parents without a tool. He gave us the exact words โ€” rooted in the complete words of Allah โ€” to seek protection for those we love most. And then he used those words himself, every day, for Hasan and Husayn.

The Dua for Protecting Children from Evil

U'idhukuma bi kalimatillahit-tammati min kulli shaytanin wa hammatin wa min kulli 'aynin lammah

"I seek protection for you both in the complete words of Allah from every devil and every poisonous creature, and from every striking evil eye."

โ€” (Bukhari 3371)

When to say it: Morning and evening, placing your hand gently on the child's head if they are present with you. Also when the child is leaving for school, when visitors are present and admiring the child, when the child is unwell, and before sleep. The Prophet ๏ทบ recited this for his grandsons regularly, not only when trouble was apparent.

For one child, use the singular form: U'idhuka (to a boy) or U'idhuki (to a girl) instead of U'idhukuma.

The Story Behind This Supplication

Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ๏ทบ used to seek protection for Hasan and Husayn with these words, and then he ๏ทบ said: "Your forefather (Ibrahim) used to seek protection with them for Ismail and Ishaq." (Bukhari 3371)

This is remarkable. The same formula spans generations โ€” from Prophet Ibrahim ๏ทบ protecting his sons, to the Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ protecting his grandsons. This is not a custom invented in one era. It is a protection passed down through prophethood itself.

The phrase "kalimatillahit-tammah" โ€” the complete words of Allah โ€” refers to words that are perfect and complete in their impact, not deficient in any way. Some scholars explain that the complete words of Allah include the entire Quran, which contains the ultimate truth and against which no falsehood can stand. Seeking refuge in them is seeking refuge in the full power of divine speech.

The Prophet ๏ทบ also said: "Whoever says in the morning and evening: 'Bismillahil-ladhi la yadurru ma'asmihi shay'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i wa huwas-Sami'ul-'Alim' three times โ€” nothing will harm him." (Abu Dawud 5088) Protection through Allah's words is woven throughout the Sunnah.

How to Make This Dua a Daily Practice

The gap between knowing a dua and actually saying it every day for your child is a gap of habit, not knowledge. Here is how to close it:

Add it to the morning adhkar immediately. Right after your own morning duas, place your hand on your child's head and say this protection formula. If they are asleep, you can say it over them quietly. This does not require the child to be awake or to understand โ€” your supplication for them is a gift from you to them, accepted by Allah regardless of whether they know you are saying it.

Say it at the school door. Many parents develop an instinct to say something as their child leaves for the day โ€” a reminder, a goodbye, a blessing. Replace or supplement that with this dua. Over time, the child begins to associate the home threshold with protection and blessing.

Use it when others admire your child. The evil eye typically follows intense admiration. When someone says "mashallah, how beautiful" or similar, follow the social interaction with a quiet supplication for protection. The habit of mentally linking admiration with the protection dua makes it automatic in exactly the situations where it matters most.

Teach your older children to say it for themselves. Children old enough to memorize Surah Al-Fatiha are old enough to learn this protection formula. Teaching them to seek Allah's protection for themselves builds their own relationship with dua and gives them a tool they carry everywhere.

Pair it with the three Quls. Many parents already recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas over their children before sleep โ€” as the Prophet ๏ทบ taught (Bukhari 5017). The protection dua pairs naturally with this evening practice, creating a brief but complete nightly shield.

Common Questions

Can I say this dua if I am not physically with my children? Yes. Dua is not limited by physical distance. If your child is at school, with family, or far away, saying this dua with intention toward them is valid and spiritually meaningful. Allah hears every supplication regardless of where the person being prayed for is located.

What is the evil eye and should I really worry about it? The evil eye (al-'ayn) is confirmed in authentic hadith. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "The evil eye is true" (Bukhari 5740) and that it can cause illness and harm. This does not mean becoming paranoid or suspicious of people who admire your child. It means taking the simple, consistent Sunnah-based precautions โ€” this dua, not displaying children excessively, saying "Mashallah" when expressing admiration โ€” and then trusting Allah with the rest.

Is it superstition to believe in spiritual protection through dua? Completely the opposite. It is trusting in what the Prophet ๏ทบ taught and what the Quran confirms. Superstition places trust in objects, rituals, or practices with no basis in revelation. Seeking protection through authentic duas is placing trust in the words that Allah Himself has described as "complete" โ€” words that contain no falsehood and carry the full weight of divine truth.

The Shield You Can Give Every Morning

You cannot protect your children from everything. But you can place them, every single morning, under the protection of the complete words of Allah โ€” the same words Ibrahim used for Ismail and Ishaq, the same words the Prophet used for Hasan and Husayn.

That is not a small thing. That is a gift with a lineage.

Say it today. Say it tomorrow. Make it as automatic as kissing them goodbye.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the dua for protecting children from evil?

The Prophet ๏ทบ would say for his grandsons Hasan and Husayn: 'U'idhukuma bi kalimatillahit-tammati min kulli shaytanin wa hammatin wa min kulli 'aynin lammah' โ€” 'I seek protection for you both in the complete words of Allah from every devil and every poisonous creature, and from every evil eye.' (Bukhari 3371)

Can I say this dua for one child instead of two?

Yes. The dua is narrated for two children (Hasan and Husayn), but the protection formula can be adapted to singular: 'U'idhuka bi kalimatillahit-tammati...' for one child. The essence of the supplication โ€” seeking refuge in Allah's complete words โ€” applies to any number of people.

When should I say the protection dua for my children?

Morning and evening, as part of the daily adhkar. Also: when the child is leaving home, when they are unwell, when they are going to a new environment (first day of school, traveling), and whenever you sense a need for protection. The Prophet ๏ทบ practiced this regularly, not only in specific circumstances.

Does this dua protect against the evil eye (nazar)?

Yes. The dua specifically mentions protection from 'kulli 'aynin lammah' โ€” every striking evil eye. The Prophet ๏ทบ also said: 'The evil eye is real' (Bukhari 5740). Using this dua regularly is the Sunnah-based protection. It does not contradict taking worldly precautions, such as not displaying children excessively on social media.
