In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

You have made the effort. You have prepared. You have worked toward it. And yet the door remains closed, or the path is unclear, or you cannot see how the pieces are supposed to come together.
This is one of the most difficult places the nafs can find itself in โ not the crisis of an acute problem, but the sustained uncertainty of not knowing what comes next. The question sits heavy: "Is anything going to open up for me?"
Islam has a precise answer to that question. And it comes in the form of a supplication that reframes the entire situation โ from "I need something to happen" to "Ya Allah, You are the one who makes things happen."
The Dua for New Opportunities
Allahumma la sahla illa ma ja'altahu sahlan wa anta taj'alul-hazna idha shi'ta sahla
"O Allah, there is no ease except what You make easy. And You make difficulty easy when You will."
โ (Ibn Hibban 2427, authenticated by Al-Arna'ut)
When to say it: Before any endeavor that requires doors to open โ a job application, an important meeting, a conversation you are nervous about, a project you are launching, a change you are hoping for. Also in the general morning adhkar as a daily orientation of tawakkul. And specifically in the moments of waiting, when the outcome is still unknown.
This dua does three things at once. It acknowledges the truth โ that ease is not something you create but something Allah grants. It declares trust โ that the same One who can make things hard can make them easy. And it removes the illusion of control that the nafs clings to โ "if I just figure out the right approach, I can make this work."
The Story Behind This Supplication
This dua appears in the tradition of the Prophet ๏ทบ as part of the broader teaching about tawakkul (tawakkul, ุชููู) โ complete trust and reliance on Allah after taking the necessary actions. It encapsulates the heart of what it means to be a believer in pursuit of any worldly goal.
The Quran contains a companion supplication from Prophet Musa ๏ทบ โ said at one of the most pivotal moments of his life, when he was about to confront Pharaoh with the message from Allah:
"My Lord, expand for me my chest and ease for me my task, and untie the knot from my tongue so that they may understand my speech." (Taf Haa, 20:25-28)
Musa ๏ทบ did not just ask for a good outcome. He asked for the internal capacity to handle what was coming (expand my chest), the external ease in the task itself (ease for me my task), and the ability to communicate effectively. This is the complete dua before a new opportunity โ addressing the internal, the external, and the relational dimensions.
The Prophet ๏ทบ also taught: "Know that if the entire creation gathered together to benefit you, they could not benefit you except with what Allah has written for you." (Tirmidhi 2516 โ hasan sahih) Every opportunity that comes to you comes because Allah caused it to open. Every door that closes, closes because Allah kept it closed.
How to Integrate This Dua Into Your Pursuit
Dua and effort are not opposing forces โ they are the two hands of the believer's action in the world:
Before an opportunity: make dua with specific intention. When you are about to apply for something, begin a conversation, or take a step toward a goal โ say this dua with full attention. Be specific in your personal additions: "O Allah, I am about to do X. Make this easy if it is good for me, and divert me from it with something better if it is not."
During the effort: maintain a state of continuous dua. The dua is not just a pre-effort ritual. It is an orientation of the heart that can be maintained throughout โ in the way you approach the task, in the internal awareness that the result is not in your hands.
After the result โ both outcomes require dua. If the opportunity opens: say Alhamdulillah, and ask Allah for barakah in what has been given. If it closes: say Alhamdulillah still, and ask Allah for what He has prepared as the better alternative. Both outcomes call for gratitude and continued asking.
Make istikhara before major decisions. When a significant opportunity presents itself and you are uncertain about it, the Sunnah prayer of istikhara (seeking guidance from Allah) combines this dua with formal supplication for divine direction. See dua for istikhara for the full practice.
Track your dua practice around goals. One of the ways the nafs undermines tawakkul is by making effort feel like the point and dua feel optional. Actively recording the duas you are making for specific goals reinforces that you are not pursuing these things on your own.

Common Questions
How do I avoid becoming passive while practicing tawakkul? True tawakkul is not passivity โ it is the combination of maximum effort with complete trust in the outcome. The Prophet ๏ทบ's metaphor was direct: "Tie your camel, then put your trust in Allah." (Tirmidhi 2517) You do your part fully and completely, and then surrender the result. Someone who makes dua without effort is not practicing tawakkul โ they are practicing laziness dressed in religious language.
Should I make dua for specific opportunities or just for "what is best for me"? Both are valid and both are Sunnah. Being specific is encouraged โ ask for the specific job, the specific meeting, the specific outcome. Then add: "or what is better for me." This mirrors the istikhara dua exactly: ask for what you want while acknowledging that Allah's knowledge of what is best is greater than yours.
How do I remain patient when I am waiting for doors to open? The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Know that victory comes with patience, relief comes with distress, and ease comes with hardship." (Attributed to the Prophet โ authentic in meaning) Patience in waiting is not passive endurance โ it is active trust that the timing is in Allah's hands and that He is aware of exactly where you are and what you need.
Every Door Is Allah's to Open
The nafs wants certainty. It wants to know that the application will succeed, that the conversation will go well, that the effort will be rewarded. What it cannot produce on its own is peace in the absence of that certainty.
This dua provides what the nafs cannot: the reminder that ease belongs to Allah, and He makes difficult things easy when He wills.
Say it before every effort. Trust the timing of every result. And keep going โ because a believer who combines action with dua is never truly without direction.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good dua for opening doors and new opportunities?
One of the most powerful duas for ease and open doors is: 'Allahumma la sahla illa ma ja'altahu sahlan wa anta taj'alul-hazna idha shi'ta sahla' โ 'O Allah, there is no ease except what You make easy, and You make difficulty easy when You will.' (Ibn Hibban 2427) This dua acknowledges that all opportunities and their opening are entirely in Allah's hands.
Is there a Quranic dua for opportunities and success?
The dua of Prophet Musa ๏ทบ before his mission is often cited: 'Rabbi ishrah li sadri wa yassir li amri' โ 'My Lord, expand for me my chest and ease for me my task.' (Quran, Taf Haa, 20:25-26) This dua asks for internal capacity (open chest) and external ease (smooth path) โ both of which are needed when facing new opportunities.
Should I make dua before or after making efforts toward an opportunity?
Both. The correct Islamic approach is tawakkul: you make the best effort you are capable of, and you make dua before, during, and after that effort. Dua without effort is passivity; effort without dua is arrogance. The Prophet ๏ทบ taught us to tie our camel and then trust Allah โ physical preparation and spiritual reliance together.
What if the opportunity I prayed for does not come?
The Prophet ๏ทบ said: 'There is no Muslim who makes dua to Allah with a supplication in which there is no sin or severing of family ties, except that Allah will give him one of three things: either He will hasten a response for him in this world, or He will store it for him in the Hereafter, or He will divert from him an equivalent harm.' (Ahmad 11133) A closed door is not a failed dua โ it is either protection or redirection.
