In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Folded white garments on a wooden surface, prayer beads nearby, warm cream and green tones, soft morning light

New clothes produce a specific kind of excitement. Something clean and unworn, chosen to look a certain way, to present yourself a certain way to the world. There is nothing wrong with that feeling. The Prophet (peace be upon him) liked beautiful clothes and wore them with care.

But there is a difference between wearing new clothes as a Muslim and wearing them as someone who has forgotten where provision comes from.

The dua for new clothes is the difference. It is short. It is specific. And it turns what could easily become a moment of kibr (pride) into a moment of shukr (gratitude) and a request for protection.

The Dua

Allahumma lakal-hamdu anta kasawtanihi, as'aluka khayrahu wa khayra ma suni'a lah, wa a'udhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma suni'a lah.

"O Allah, to You belongs all praise. You have clothed me with it. I ask You for its good and the good of what it was made for, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what it was made for." โ€” (Abu Dawud 4020, Tirmidhi 1767)

When to say it: When you first put on a new piece of clothing. The garment itself can also be mentioned by name if it has one (e.g., "a shirt," "a thobe").

The dua for blessing someone who wears new clothes (say this to others):

ุชูุจู’ู„ูŽู‰ ูˆูŽูŠูุฎู’ู„ููู ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ู

Tubla wa yukhliful-lah.

"May you wear it out and may Allah replace it for you." โ€” (Abu Dawud 4020)

This blessing means: may you use this garment fully and may Allah provide you with another when it is worn out โ€” a practical, generous wish for continued provision.

The Story Behind It

The Prophet (peace be upon him) was not indifferent to what he wore. He loved white clothing:

ุงู„ู’ุจูŽุณููˆุง ู…ูู†ู’ ุซููŠูŽุงุจููƒูู…ู ุงู„ู’ุจูŽูŠูŽุงุถูŽ ููŽุฅูู†ูŽู‘ู‡ูŽุง ู…ูู†ู’ ุฎูŽูŠู’ุฑู ุซููŠูŽุงุจููƒูู…ู’

"Wear white garments, for they are among the best of your garments." โ€” (Abu Dawud 4061)

He had a favorite green cloak. He named his turbans. He cared about appearance as a form of neatness and respect for others, while being completely free of the kibr that can attach to clothing.

The dua reflects this balance. It begins with lakal-hamdu โ€” "to You belongs all praise." Not "I bought this." Not "I look good in this." The first word is acknowledgment that the clothing came from Allah, filtered through causes but originating with Him.

Then it asks for khayr โ€” the good of the garment and the good of what it was made for. Clothing is made for covering, for protection, for honor, for practical use. The dua asks that all those purposes be fulfilled well.

Then the protection: wa a'udhu bika min sharrihi โ€” I seek refuge in You from its evil. Clothing can become a vehicle for riya' (showing off), for kibr (arrogance), for immodesty, for extravagance. The dua, said before wearing the garment, asks Allah to protect you from those uses.

How to Make This Dua Part of How You Dress

The challenge here is the same as most non-salah habits: the moment when the dua should be said is occupied by something else. You are getting dressed and thinking about the day.

Build the trigger: garment in hand, dua in mouth:

The moment you pick up a new piece of clothing to wear for the first time, that is the trigger. You do not need to be dressed yet โ€” say the dua as you are about to put it on, or just after it is on for the first time.

For new purchases:

Many people wear new clothing within a few days of buying it. When you first take it out of the bag and try it on at home, say the dua then. That way, the first wearing is always covered.

Teach it when gifting or receiving clothes:

When someone gives you clothing as a gift, say the dua when you first wear it. When you give clothing to someone, say Tubla wa yukhliful-lah to them โ€” you are passing on a prophetic blessing and reminding both of you about the Islamic relationship with provision.

The deeper habit: gratitude for what you have:

The dua for new clothes is one practice. The broader habit it points toward is gratitude for all provision. The Quran is direct:

ูŠูŽุง ุจูŽู†ููŠ ุขุฏูŽู…ูŽ ู‚ูŽุฏู’ ุฃูŽู†ุฒูŽู„ู’ู†ูŽุง ุนูŽู„ูŽูŠู’ูƒูู… ู„ูุจูŽุงุณู‹ุง ูŠููˆูŽุงุฑููŠ ุณูŽูˆู’ุกูŽุงุชููƒูู…ู’ ูˆูŽุฑููŠุดู‹ุง

"O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment." โ€” (Quran 7:26)

Clothing is provision from Allah โ€” mentioned alongside food, shelter, and family as a direct gift. The dua for new clothes is what turns wearing something new from a private vanity moment into an act of shukr.

Counter the nafs on fashion:

The nafs loves new clothes. It loves the attention they bring, the validation, the feeling of newness. None of that is haram in itself โ€” but when it drives excessive purchasing, debt, or kibr, it has become a problem. The dua for new clothes builds the habit of returning every piece of clothing to its rightful owner โ€” Allah โ€” the moment you wear it. That practice, done consistently, keeps the nafs from making clothes into identity.

Common Questions

Do I say this dua every time I wear the garment, or just the first time?

Just the first time you wear a new garment. After that, say Bismillah when dressing in general, but the specific new clothes dua is for the first wearing. Some scholars also recommend saying the dua the first time you wear the garment after washing it following a period of not wearing it, though the primary application is the first time it is worn.

What counts as "new"? What if I buy secondhand clothes?

The dua applies to clothes that are new to you โ€” whether brand new or secondhand. The key is that you are wearing this garment for the first time. The dua asks for the good of the garment and seeks refuge from its evil โ€” both are relevant regardless of whether the garment was worn by someone else before.

I have a lot of clothes and never say this dua. Is that bad?

It is a missed sunnah โ€” a lost opportunity for reward โ€” but not a sin. The way to address it is to start now: the next new clothing you wear, say the dua. Build from there. The past missed moments do not require making up. The Prophet did not burden his Companions with guilt over opportunities they missed โ€” he taught the practice going forward.

Closing

The next time you open a package or reach for something new to wear for the first time, pause for five seconds. Say the words. Allahumma lakal-hamdu. To You belongs all praise. You clothed me.

It takes almost no time. It costs nothing. And it quietly, consistently builds the habit of seeing every provision โ€” including what is on your back โ€” as a gift from the One who provides.

What did the Prophet say when wearing new clothes?

The Prophet (peace be upon him) would say this dua when wearing new clothing. He is also reported to have made dua for others when they wore new clothes, saying: Tubla wa yukhliful-lah โ€” May you wear it out and Allah replace it. (Abu Dawud 4020)

Is there anything else to do when wearing new clothes Islamically?

Name the garment. The Prophet (peace be upon him) named his clothes โ€” his turbans, cloaks, and shirts all had names. This practice builds mindfulness about what you wear and prevents the mindless consumption the nafs drives. Say Bismillah when starting to dress.

What is the connection between clothes and gratitude in Islam?

The Quran mentions clothing as a direct blessing from Allah: We have sent down upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment (Quran 7:26). Every piece of clothing is provision. The dua acknowledges that Allah is the One who clothed you โ€” redirecting what could be vanity into gratitude.
