In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

A peaceful bedroom scene with dawn light streaming through a window onto a prayer mat, warm cream and golden tones

Every morning, something miraculous happens. Your soul returns to your body. Your eyes open. Your heart beats. Your lungs fill with air. You are alive โ€” again. And most of us miss it completely because the first thing we reach for is our phone.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) did something different. The very first words on his tongue โ€” before moving, before standing, before anything โ€” were words of gratitude to the One who gave him another day. That single habit, taking less than five seconds, changed the entire trajectory of his morning.

It can change yours too.

The Dua

"All praise is to Allah who gave us life after having taken it from us, and to Him is the resurrection." โ€” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6324)

When to say it: The instant you wake up. Before your feet touch the floor. Before your hand reaches for your phone. Make it the very first conscious thought of your day.

An additional dua the Prophet (peace be upon him) would say upon waking:

"There is no god but Allah alone with no partner; to Him belongs dominion and to Him belongs praise, and He is able to do all things. Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, there is no god but Allah, Allah is the Greatest, and there is no might or power except with Allah." โ€” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1154)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that whoever wakes at night and says this, then says Allahummaghfir li (O Allah, forgive me), their dua will be answered. And if they make wudu and pray, their prayer will be accepted.

The Story Behind It

The Quran makes a profound connection between sleep and death:

"Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that have not died, during their sleep." โ€” (Surah Az-Zumar, 39:42)

Every time you fall asleep, your soul leaves your body. And every time you wake up, Allah returns it. This is not poetry โ€” this is Islamic theology. Sleep is a minor death. Waking up is a minor resurrection.

That is why the dua says ahyana ba'da ma amatana โ€” "He gave us life after death." You are not just waking up from a nap. You are being given another chance. Another day. Another opportunity to pray, to repent, to do good, to draw closer to Allah.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) understood this deeply. He treated every morning as a gift, not a guarantee. And that awareness โ€” that today might be your last โ€” is what makes the waking dua so powerful. It is not just gratitude. It is a reminder that you are on borrowed time, and every moment matters.

How to Make This Dua Part of Your Daily Life

The waking dua is the easiest Sunnah to implement. It takes five seconds. You do not need wudu. You do not need to be standing. You do not even need to be fully awake. Just say the words.

The challenge is not difficulty โ€” it is consistency. Here is how to make it automatic.

Anchor it to the moment of waking:

  • Put a small card or sticky note on your bedside table or nightstand with the dua written on it
  • For the first two weeks, seeing it will remind you
  • After two weeks, you will not need the card โ€” your brain will have linked waking up with the dua

Phone discipline:

  • The biggest obstacle to this dua is your phone
  • Most people reach for their phone within seconds of waking โ€” and the dua gets lost in notifications
  • Rule: dua BEFORE phone. No exceptions
  • If you charge your phone across the room, you remove the temptation to grab it instantly

Build a morning sequence:

  1. Eyes open โ†’ waking dua (5 seconds)
  2. Sit up โ†’ say Bismillah (1 second)
  3. Wash hands three times (Sunnah โ€” the Prophet advised this because you do not know where your hands were during sleep)
  4. Use the bathroom
  5. Wudu
  6. Fajr prayer
  7. Morning adhkar and protection duas

This entire sequence takes 15-20 minutes and sets you up for a day that begins with Allah on your mind โ€” not your inbox.

Track your streak:

  • Every morning you say the dua, mark it
  • Build a 7-day streak. Then 30. Then 90
  • Missing one day is not failure โ€” it is feedback. Get back to it tomorrow

The night before matters:

  • Going to bed late almost guarantees you will skip the waking dua because you will be groggy and reach for your phone on autopilot
  • The Prophet (peace be upon him) disliked conversations after Isha (Sahih al-Bukhari 568) โ€” he went to bed early
  • Sleeping early is not boring. It is strategic. Your morning begins with your bedtime

Dua before sleeping (pairs with the waking dua):

ุจูุงุณู’ู…ููƒูŽ ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ูู…ูŽู‘ ุฃูŽู…ููˆุชู ูˆูŽุฃูŽุญู’ูŠูŽุง

Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya.

"In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live." โ€” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6324)

Notice the mirror structure: before sleep you acknowledge death, and upon waking you acknowledge life. Together, these two duas frame your sleep as a conscious, spiritual act.

Morning adhkar dua:

Asbahna wa asbahal-mulku lillahi wal-hamdu lillah.

"We have entered the morning, and the dominion belongs to Allah, and all praise is to Allah." โ€” (Sahih Muslim 2723)

This is part of the full morning adhkar. After your waking dua and Fajr prayer, complete the set with your morning supplications for full spiritual coverage.

Dua when looking in the mirror:

ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ูู…ูŽู‘ ุฃูŽู†ู’ุชูŽ ุญูŽุณูŽู‘ู†ู’ุชูŽ ุฎูŽู„ู’ู‚ููŠ ููŽุญูŽุณูู‘ู†ู’ ุฎูู„ูู‚ููŠ

"O Allah, You have made my appearance beautiful, so make my character beautiful." โ€” (Musnad Ahmad 3823)

A perfect addition to your morning routine โ€” said after wudu when you catch your reflection.

Common Questions

What if I wake up multiple times during the night?

Say the dua each time you wake. There is no limit. If you wake briefly and fall back asleep, you can say the shorter version (Alhamdulillah) and save the full dua for your final waking. The key principle is: every return to consciousness is a gift worth acknowledging.

I always forget the dua because I wake up groggy. How do I fix this?

This is normal and it gets better with practice. Two strategies: first, put a physical reminder where you will see it (sticky note, card, phone wallpaper). Second, say the dua even if you are half-asleep โ€” your tongue will learn the habit even before your brain is fully engaged. After a few weeks, it becomes automatic.

Should I say the dua before or after my alarm?

After. The alarm wakes you โ€” the dua is your first conscious response. Whether you wake naturally, from an alarm, or because someone woke you, the dua applies. It is about the moment of consciousness returning, not the mechanism that triggers it.

Can I say it in English?

The Arabic carries special reward because it is the exact words of the Prophet (peace be upon him). But if you do not have it memorized yet, saying "All praise is to Allah who gave me life after death, and to Him is the return" in English while you learn the Arabic is perfectly acceptable. Do not let imperfect Arabic stop you from building the habit.

Closing

Your morning does not start when your alarm rings. It does not start when you check your phone. It does not start when you drink your coffee. Your morning starts with your first words โ€” and those words either connect you to Allah or disconnect you from Him.

Five seconds. That is all the waking dua takes. Five seconds to acknowledge that your soul was returned, that you are alive by Allah's permission, and that this day โ€” however long or short โ€” is a gift you did not earn.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) never wasted those first five seconds. Do not waste yours.

Start tomorrow morning. Say the words. Mean them. And build the streak that changes everything.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the dua for waking up in Islam?

The primary dua for waking up is: Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi ahyana ba da ma amatana wa ilayhin-nushur โ€” All praise is to Allah who gave us life after having taken it from us, and to Him is the resurrection (Sahih al-Bukhari 6324). This dua acknowledges that sleep is a minor death and waking up is a gift from Allah.

When exactly should I say the waking up dua?

Say it as the very first thing when you open your eyes and regain consciousness. Before checking your phone, before getting out of bed, before anything else. The Prophet (peace be upon him) would say it immediately upon waking. Making it the first words on your tongue sets the tone for your entire day.

Is there more than one dua for waking up?

Yes. The primary dua is Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi ahyana, but there are additional supplications the Prophet (peace be upon him) would say upon waking, including La ilaha illAllah wahdahu la sharika lah (there is no god but Allah alone with no partner). He would also recite the last ten verses of Surah Ali Imran (3:190-200) upon waking for night prayer.

What should I do after saying the waking up dua?

After the dua, the Sunnah sequence is: say Bismillah, wash your hands three times (the Prophet advised this before putting hands in water after sleep), use the bathroom, perform wudu, and then pray โ€” either Fajr if it is time, or tahajjud if you wake before Fajr. Follow this with your morning adhkar for a complete spiritual start to your day.

Does the dua for waking up apply to naps as well?

Yes. Since the dua acknowledges that Allah has returned your soul after taking it during sleep, it applies to any sleep โ€” whether a full night or a short nap. Any time you wake from sleep, it is appropriate to thank Allah for returning your consciousness. The habit of saying it after naps reinforces the practice for morning wake-ups too.
