In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

There is a specific window every night when the gates of answered supplication are most open. It is not Ramadan. It is not Hajj. It happens every single night โ in the final hours before Fajr.
This is the last third of the night, and it is the time the Prophet ๏ทบ described as the most receptive moment for dua in the entire day. Most people sleep through it. The few who wake for it discover something that is difficult to explain and impossible to forget.
The Dua for the Last Third of the Night
When the Prophet ๏ทบ woke for Tahajjud, he would begin with this comprehensive supplication:
ุงููููููู ูู ูููู ุงููุญูู ูุฏู ุฃูููุชู ูููุฑู ุงูุณููู ูุงููุงุชู ููุงูุฃูุฑูุถู ููู ููู ููููููููุ ูููููู ุงููุญูู ูุฏู ุฃูููุชู ูููููู ู ุงูุณููู ูุงููุงุชู ููุงูุฃูุฑูุถู ููู ููู ูููููููู
Allahumma lakal-hamd, anta nurus-samawati wal-ardi wa man fihinna, wa lakal-hamd anta qayyimus-samawati wal-ardi wa man fihinna
"O Allah, all praise belongs to You. You are the Light of the heavens and the earth and all who are in them. All praise belongs to You; You are the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all who are in them."
โ (Sahih Bukhari 1120)
This is the opening of the longer Tahajjud dua. It begins with praise before petition โ a profound structure. You start by acknowledging who Allah is before asking for anything. This orientation of the heart from want to gratitude is itself an act of worship, and it prepares the soul for the sincerity that the last third of the night calls for.
The Divine Invitation
Every night in the last third, Allah descends to the lowest heaven and calls out: "Is there anyone supplicating to Me so I may respond? Is there anyone asking of Me so I may give? Is there anyone seeking My forgiveness so I may forgive?" (Sahih Bukhari 1145)
This hadith is not metaphorical encouragement. It is a description of a real window of divine receptivity. The question "Is there anyone?" is not rhetorical โ it is an invitation, addressed to you, issued every single night.
The Story Behind This Sacred Time
The Prophet ๏ทบ guarded the last third of the night throughout his life. Aisha ุฑุถู ุงููู ุนููุง reported that he would sleep in the early part of the night, wake to pray in the last portion, then return to sleep briefly before Fajr. This was his consistent pattern.
When his feet became swollen from long Tahajjud prayers, Aisha asked him why he prayed so much when Allah had already forgiven him all his sins. He said: "Should I not be a grateful servant?" (Bukhari 4837)
The last third of the night is not only for those with urgent needs. It is for those who want to be grateful servants. For those who want to be present with Allah in the silence when the world is asleep. The Prophet's feet were swollen not because he feared punishment, but because this time was too precious to sleep through.
How to Wake Up and Make the Most of This Time
Waking for the last third requires preparation the night before:
Set the intention before sleeping. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Whoever goes to bed intending to wake up and pray but sleep overtakes him until morning โ his intention is recorded and he is given his reward." (Abu Dawud 1314 โ sahih) The intention matters even before your eyes close.
Sleep earlier. This is the simplest and most overlooked preparation. If you go to sleep at midnight and Fajr is at 5 AM, the last third begins around 3:20 AM โ giving you very little time and very little sleep before Fajr. An earlier bedtime is the most reliable path to waking for this prayer.
Set a specific alarm โ not a flexible one. One alarm, at the calculated start of the last third. Not a window of time, not "around 3 AM." A specific time creates a specific commitment.
Minimize the barrier to starting. Have your prayer mat ready. Perform ghusl or wudu before sleeping if possible, so you can begin immediately. The hardest moment is the transition from the pillow to standing. Make that transition as frictionless as possible.
Start with two rakaat, not twelve. The goal in the beginning is to build the habit of waking and beginning, not to replicate the Prophet's full Tahajjud session immediately. Two rakaat and a sincere dua is an excellent start. Build from there over months, not days.
Make your personal duas in sujood. The prostration in Tahajjud is among the closest moments to Allah available in this life. This is where you bring your specific needs, fears, hopes, and gratitude. No prepared text required โ just honest words in whatever language comes naturally.

For the full practice of Tahajjud, see dua for tahajjud and how to pray tahajjud consistently. The dua for qiyam ul layl covers additional supplications for this night prayer. For the challenge of waking up, how to wake up for Fajr every day provides the same habit-building framework applied to the earliest prayer.
Common Questions
What if I wake up but cannot focus โ my mind is scattered at 3 AM? Begin with dhikr rather than the full dua. Say subhanallah, alhamdulillah, allahu akbar slowly, thirty times each. This calms the scattered mind and brings you into a state of presence. Then transition to prayer or personal dua.
Is it better to wake for the last third or to sleep and pray Fajr on time? Fajr on time is obligatory; Tahajjud is sunnah. If you genuinely cannot do both, prioritize Fajr on time. But for most people this is a false choice โ with an earlier bedtime, both are entirely achievable.
Do women get the same reward for praying in the last third as men? Yes. The invitation in the hadith is universal. The description of Allah descending and calling out contains no restriction. Women, men, young, old โ everyone who wakes and asks in the last third of the night is responding to the same divine call.
What if I fall back asleep and miss Fajr? Set a second alarm for Fajr before you sleep. The purpose of the last third is to draw closer to Allah โ not to put Fajr at risk. Protect both.
The Most Important Appointment You Keep
Every night, Allah calls out to the empty space before Fajr.
Most people sleep through it. But if you wake โ even once, even for five minutes, even for two rakaat and a whispered request โ you have answered a divine invitation.
There is nothing quite like the silence of the last third of the night, when the world is at rest and you are alone with Allah. Start this week.

Frequently Asked Questions
What time exactly is the last third of the night?
Divide the time between Isha and Fajr into three equal parts. The last third begins at the start of the final portion and ends at Fajr. For example, if Isha is at 9 PM and Fajr is at 5 AM (8 hours), the last third begins around 2:20 AM. Many prayer time apps calculate this automatically.
Do I need to make wudu before dua in the last third of the night?
Wudu is required for salah but not strictly required for dua. However, if you are making tahajjud prayer alongside your dua, then wudu is necessary for the prayer. Being in a state of purity enhances the quality of your presence and is recommended when possible.
Is it worth waking up for just a few minutes if I cannot pray full rakaat?
Yes. The hadith does not say Allah only responds to those who pray full units. It says He calls out to anyone who asks. Two rakaat of prayer and a sincere dua take less than five minutes. The barrier to entry is low; the reward is immense.
What if I cannot wake up for the last third โ am I missing something irreplaceable?
Allah is merciful. If you make sincere effort and still cannot wake, ask for forgiveness and try the next night. The Companions who regularly woke for Tahajjud also had nights they slept through. What matters is the sincere intention and consistent effort over time.
