In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

A winding path ascending through layers of soft golden clouds at night, evoking the ascension of the Prophet during Miraj and the closeness to Allah that this sacred journey represents

Of all the revelations, all the commands, all the guidance that came to the Prophet ๏ทบ over twenty-three years, only one was not delivered on earth.

Every verse of the Quran came through Jibreel ๏ทบ. Every hadith was spoken on the ground of this world, among people and communities. Every command of Islam was given in the ordinary conditions of prophetic life.

Except salah.

Salah was given in the presence of Allah Himself, at the highest point of the ascension, during the most extraordinary night in human history: Laylat al-Isra wal-Miraj. The Night Journey and the Ascension.

If there is a lesson in that distinction, it is this: the prayer is not ordinary. It never was.

The Dua Connected to This Night

The Prophet ๏ทบ taught a specific dua to Mu'adh ibn Jabal, telling him to say it after every salah. Given that salah is itself the gift of Isra and Miraj, this dua is the most fitting companion to the occasion:

ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ูู…ูŽู‘ ุฃูŽุนูู†ูู‘ูŠ ุนูŽู„ูŽู‰ ุฐููƒู’ุฑููƒูŽ ูˆูŽุดููƒู’ุฑููƒูŽ ูˆูŽุญูุณู’ู†ู ุนูุจูŽุงุฏูŽุชููƒูŽ

Allahumma a'ini 'ala dhikrika wa-shukrika wa-husni 'ibadatika.

"O Allah, help me to remember You, to thank You, and to worship You well." โ€” (Abu Dawud 1522, Ahmad 22119)

Three requests that form the complete arc of sincere worship:

Dhikr โ€” remembrance. Not just saying words but keeping Allah present in consciousness. The problem with modern life is not that we reject Allah โ€” it is that we forget Him constantly. This dua asks for help with the forgetting.

Shukr โ€” gratitude. Every blessing requires acknowledgment. Salah itself is a blessing. The dua for gratitude that flows naturally after prayer is the proper response to receiving something extraordinary.

Husn al-ibadah โ€” the excellence of worship. Not just performing acts but performing them well. The Prophet ๏ทบ described ihsan in worship as "to worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you cannot see Him, know that He sees you." (Bukhari 50). This dua asks for exactly that quality.

The Story of That Night

The Prophet ๏ทบ was in one of the hardest periods of his life. The year before is called 'Am al-Huzn โ€” the Year of Grief. His wife Khadijah ุฑุถูŠ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู†ู‡ุง had died. His uncle Abu Talib โ€” his protection โ€” had died. He had gone to Ta'if to call its people to Islam and been driven away with stones, bleeding, humiliated.

In this state, the Isra and Miraj occurred.

He was carried from Makkah to Jerusalem on the Buraq, where he led all the prophets in prayer โ€” a symbol that he was their imam, their seal, their completion. Then the ascension began. Level by level through the seven heavens. At each level, another prophet: Adam, Yahya, Isa, Yusuf, Idris, Harun, Musa, and finally Ibrahim ๏ทบ.

Then the final ascension to a point where even Jibreel could not accompany him.

Allah spoke directly to the Prophet ๏ทบ and prescribed fifty prayers per day. On the way back down, Musa โ€” who had led the Children of Israel and knew how difficult sustained worship is for human beings โ€” urged him to return and ask for a reduction. The Prophet went back multiple times until the prayers were reduced to five, carrying the reward of fifty.

This back-and-forth โ€” the Prophet returning to Allah again and again through Musa's counsel โ€” is itself a model. Come back. Keep asking. The door is open.

How to Connect to Isra and Miraj Through Practice

The Sunnah prescribes no specific ritual for the night traditionally associated with the Night Journey. What it prescribes is salah โ€” five times, every day, regardless of what night it is. But the occasion of Isra and Miraj can serve as an annual moment to reconnect with what salah actually is.

Pray with the remembrance of the origin. When you stand for salah today, remember that this command came from the presence of Allah Himself. It was not sent down through an angel. It was given directly. That changes the weight of each rak'ah.

Say the dua of Mu'adh after every salah. Allahumma a'ini 'ala dhikrika wa-shukrika wa-husni 'ibadatika. Begin this practice today. The scholars who explain this hadith note that the Prophet ๏ทบ told Mu'adh to say it after every single prayer โ€” not occasionally, not on special nights, but every time. Build this into your morning adhkar and evening practice.

Work on the quality of your salah. Isra and Miraj is the annual reminder that you received something extraordinary and have been praying it five times daily since you were a child. Ask yourself honestly: has it become routine? The dua for khushu in prayer addresses exactly this โ€” the inner quality of your salah, not just its outer form.

Reflect on the salah as your personal Miraj. The scholars say that every salah is a mi'raj for the believer โ€” an ascension from the ordinary world into the presence of Allah. The opening Allahu Akbar of takbir is the beginning of that ascension. Treat it that way.

Dua for khushu in prayer: The dua for khushu in prayer goes directly to the heart of what the night of Miraj calls you toward โ€” presence, not performance. If your salah has become mechanical, this is the dua and practice to change that.

Dua for spiritual growth: Isra and Miraj is a story of ascension โ€” literal and spiritual. The dua for spiritual growth carries the intention of that upward movement into your daily practice.

Dua for increase in iman: The night of the journey strengthened the faith of those who believed and tested those who could not accept it. The dua for increase in iman is the practical response to wanting more of what Isra and Miraj represents.

Common Questions

How should I explain Isra and Miraj to children?

Focus on the love story: Allah invited His most beloved Prophet to come close during the hardest period of his life. He did not send this invitation when everything was going well โ€” He sent it when the Prophet was most in need of reassurance. For children, this is the most important part: when you are struggling, Allah's closeness increases, not decreases.

What is the significance of the Prophet leading all the prophets in prayer in Jerusalem?

It was the definitive statement of prophetic succession. The imam of all the prophets was Muhammad ๏ทบ โ€” meaning he brought the completion and summation of every prophet's message. It also connected Masjid al-Aqsa, the first qiblah, to the unbroken chain of prophetic Islam. This is why Masjid al-Aqsa holds such deep significance for Muslims everywhere.

Is it permissible to hold special lectures or events on this night?

Organizing educational events that teach about the story of Isra and Miraj and draw lessons for practice is fine. What is not prescribed is treating this night as a special night of worship equivalent to Laylat al-Qadr, with specific acts of worship attributed to it that the Prophet himself did not observe. Education and reflection: yes. Invented rituals: avoid.

Closing

The Prophet ๏ทบ came back from the direct presence of Allah with one gift for his ummah: five prayers a day.

Not a verse, not a sermon, not a book. Five moments of deliberate turning toward Allah, spread through every waking hour of every day.

Isra and Miraj is your annual reminder of what you hold in your hands every day. The salah is not a chore to get through. It is what came from the presence of the Most High, brought back for you at cost, and offered freely five times every day.

Say the dua of Mu'adh after each one. Pray with presence. Let the ascension happen.

Frequently Asked Questions

What dua should I say on the night of Isra and Miraj?

There is no specific dua prescribed exclusively for the night of Isra and Miraj in the authentic Sunnah. The appropriate acts are sincere supplication, increased salah, Quran recitation, and reflection on the gift of salah that was given during this journey. A fitting dua from the Sunnah is: Allahumma a'ini 'ala dhikrika wa-shukrika wa-husni 'ibadatika โ€” O Allah, help me remember You, thank You, and worship You well. (Abu Dawud 1522)

Is the 27th of Rajab specifically prescribed for worship?

No specific worship is prescribed for the 27th of Rajab in authentic hadith. The exact date of the Night Journey is not definitively established in the Sunnah, and no special prayer or fast was prescribed by the Prophet for this occasion. Scholars like Ibn Taymiyyah noted this. However, using any occasion to increase sincere worship, reflection, and dua is always encouraged.

What happened during Isra and Miraj?

The Night Journey (Isra) took the Prophet from Masjid al-Haram in Makkah to Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem in a single night, where he led all the prophets in prayer. The Ascension (Miraj) then took him through the seven heavens, where he met multiple prophets and ultimately was in the presence of Allah, receiving the command of fifty daily prayers. After the intercession of Musa, the prayers were reduced to five, with the reward of fifty.

Why is salah called the gift of Isra and Miraj?

Every other command in Islam was delivered to the Prophet through Jibreel on earth. Salah alone was given to the Prophet directly, in Allah's presence, during the ascension to the highest heavens. This makes salah unique โ€” it is not a command mediated through revelation, but one received face to face. The scholars say this is why salah is described as the mi'raj (ascension) of the believer โ€” a direct connection with Allah that echoes the original night.

How can Isra and Miraj improve my relationship with salah?

Reflect on the fact that the Prophet returned from the direct presence of Allah with salah as the gift he brought back for the ummah. Every time you stand for salah, you are responding to something that came from the highest point of creation. This is why salah should not feel like a burden โ€” it is an invitation. The dua taught to Muadh (Abu Dawud 1522) for being helped to worship well is the perfect dua to build this relationship.
