In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Your home is not just where you sleep. In Islam, it is a sanctuary โ a space that can either repel or invite barakah depending on what happens inside its walls. It can be a place where shaytan settles comfortably or a place he cannot stand to be.
The difference is not the size of the house, the neighborhood, or the decor. The difference is what you bring through the door when you enter: the name of Allah or something else.
The Dua When Entering Your Home

Bismillahi walajna, wa bismillahi kharajna, wa 'ala Allahi rabbina tawakkalna
"In the name of Allah we enter, in the name of Allah we leave, and upon Allah our Lord we rely."
โ (Abu Dawud 5096)
This is the prophetic dua for entering home. When the Prophet ๏ทบ entered his home, he began with the name of Allah โ and encouraged his household to do the same. The shaytan, upon hearing this, says to the other shayatin: "There is no place for you to sleep here and no dinner for you." (Muslim 2018)
That is not a metaphor. It is the actual narrated consequence of beginning your entry with bismillah and dhikr.
The Quranic Command to Greet With Salam
Allah says in the Quran: "When you enter houses, greet one another with a greeting from Allah, blessed and good." (Surah An-Nur, 24:61). This greeting โ Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh โ when said entering your own home, transforms the act of arriving from a mundane routine into an act of worship.
Say it when you enter, even if no one is home. The angels are.
The Story Behind Making the Home Sacred
The Prophet ๏ทบ specifically instructed Muslims to pray voluntary prayers (nafl) in their homes rather than always in the masjid. He said: "Pray some of your prayers in your homes, and do not make them like graves." (Muslim 778). A home where only obligatory prayers are performed but voluntary worship is done exclusively at the masjid becomes spiritually hollow โ a place just for sleeping and eating. But a home where voluntary dhikr, Quran, and nafl salah happen regularly becomes a living space consecrated by worship.
He also specifically recommended reciting Surah Al-Baqarah in the home: "Do not make your homes like graves. Shaytan flees from the house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited." (Muslim 780). This is one of the clearest Prophetic prescriptions for filling a home with protective barakah.
How to Build a Home Full of Barakah
Making your home a blessed space is a practice, not a one-time event. It is built through consistent small acts that layer protection and dhikr into the daily rhythm of the household.
Begin every entry with the prophetic dua. The dua from Abu Dawud 5096 takes five seconds. Make it a non-negotiable habit: you touch the door handle, you say the dua. This simple act โ repeated hundreds of times a year โ shifts the energy of the home at the threshold.
Recite Surah Al-Baqarah weekly. You do not have to recite the entire surah in one sitting. The Sunnah permits spreading it across the day. What matters is that it enters the house regularly. Play or recite it on Friday evenings or keep a daily schedule.
Designate a prayer spot. The Prophet ๏ทบ would pray in a specific area of his home regularly. Having a prayer mat in a dedicated corner โ away from screens and noise โ creates a physical space of dhikr that you return to daily. The space begins to feel sacred because of what you do there.
Replace haram sounds with Quran. Background music, haram content playing on screens, or constant noise crowds out barakah. Replace the default with Quran recitation as background โ softly, consistently. The home should be a place where the Quran lives, not just visits.
Say Bismillah before every action in the home. Before eating, before cooking, before beginning work from home, before the children start their homework. Bismillah is the Islamic consecration of ordinary acts โ it transforms them into moments of remembrance.

Ayat al-Kursi before sleeping:
The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi when he goes to bed, Allah will appoint a guardian over him and no shaytan will come near him until morning." (Bukhari 5010). Reciting it in your bedroom at night is one of the most powerful ways to consecrate that space.

If you have recently moved and want to bless a new home specifically, dua for a new home gives the full guidance. The dua for protection from shaytan covers the broader spiritual protection practices that complement making your home a dhikr space.
Common Questions
My home does not feel peaceful โ what can I do spiritually?
Start with the threshold: begin saying the entering dua consistently. Then add daily Quran recitation, even 10 minutes. Then look for sources of haram in the home โ content, relationships, income โ and gradually address them. Barakah flows in through specific doors; it also flows out through specific holes.
Can I make dua for my home in English?
Yes. All personal dua can be in any language. The Arabic duas above are prophetic narrations that carry their own weight, but your sincere personal supplication โ "Ya Allah, bless this home and fill it with peace" โ is valid and heard.
My family does not practice. Can I still bring barakah to the home?
Yes. The personal worship of one righteous household member benefits the entire family. Keep your own adhkar, recite Quran even quietly, and make dua for your family's hearts to open. One person's consistent dhikr can change the atmosphere of an entire household over time.
The Home as a Training Ground
Your home is where you practice Islam in private. It is where your children see you pray when no one is watching. It is where you choose the Quran over the screen. It is where you say bismillah before cooking a simple meal no one will praise.
These small, consistent acts of consecration accumulate. A home built on them becomes a sanctuary โ not because it is beautiful or large, but because Allah's name is present in every room, at every threshold, in every moment.

Frequently Asked Questions
What dua should I say when entering my home?
The Prophet taught: Bismillahi walajna, wa bismillahi kharajna, wa 'ala Allahi rabbina tawakkalna โ 'In the name of Allah we enter, in the name of Allah we leave, and upon Allah our Lord we rely.' (Abu Dawud 5096). This simple dua, said every time you enter, begins the process of making your home a space dedicated to Allah.
How do I bring barakah into my home?
The Prophet gave several clear practices: recite Surah Al-Baqarah regularly in the home (it drives away shaytan), pray voluntary prayers there (Bukhari 731), make dhikr frequently, avoid haram content and music, and greet with salam when entering even if alone. A home where the Quran is recited and salah is performed becomes a place Shaytan cannot easily settle.
Is there a specific dua for a new home?
The dua when entering home (Abu Dawud 5096) applies whether the home is new or established. For a new home specifically, scholars recommend performing two rakats of nafl prayer upon first entering, reciting Ayat al-Kursi, and making a personal dua for Allah to bless the dwelling and its inhabitants.
Why does the Quran say to greet your home with salam even when alone?
Allah says: 'When you enter houses, greet one another with a greeting from Allah, blessed and good.' (Surah An-Nur, 24:61). Scholars explain that the greeting is for yourself, for any family members present, and for the angels. Beginning each entry with the remembrance of Allah consecrates the space.
