In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

A wooden front door slightly ajar with warm golden light spilling through, prayer beads hanging on the doorknob, lush green foliage outside

Your home is not just four walls and a roof. In Islam, it is a sanctuary โ€” a place where peace (salam), Allah's remembrance, and spiritual protection are meant to reside alongside everything else.

But peace does not happen automatically. It is invited in. And the invitation begins at the door.

Every time you cross your threshold and say the right words โ€” even in 10 seconds โ€” you are filling your home with something invisible but real: the barakah (blessing) of Allah's name, and the spiritual protection that follows it.

The Dua for Entering Home

Allahumma inni as'aluka khayral-mawliji wa khayral-mawlaj. Bismillahi walajna, wa bismillahi kharajna, wa 'alallahi rabbina tawakkalna.

"O Allah, I ask You for the best of entering and the best of leaving. In the name of Allah we enter, in the name of Allah we leave, and upon Allah our Lord we rely." โ€” (Abu Dawud 5096)

Then say salam to whoever is inside โ€” or to yourself and the angels, even if the house is empty:

ุงู„ุณูŽู‘ู„ูŽุงู…ู ุนูŽู„ูŽูŠู’ูƒูู…ู’ ูˆูŽุฑูŽุญู’ู…ูŽุฉู ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ู ูˆูŽุจูŽุฑูŽูƒูŽุงุชูู‡ู

As-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

When to say it: As you step into your home. At the door, while your key is still in hand or your shoes are coming off.

The Story Behind the Dua

The Prophet (peace be upon him) was deeply intentional about the spiritual atmosphere of the home. He taught that the home should be a place of worship, not just habitation.

In a powerful hadith, the Prophet (peace be upon him) described what happens when the name of Allah is mentioned or omitted at the threshold. He said: "When a man enters his home and mentions Allah's name when entering and when eating, Shaytan says: 'You have no place to sleep here and no dinner.' When he enters without mentioning Allah's name, Shaytan says: 'You have found your overnight accommodation.' And when he does not mention Allah's name when eating, Shaytan says: 'You have found dinner and accommodation.'" (Sahih Muslim 2018)

This is not superstition. It is a spiritual ecology. The home that vibrates with Allah's name โ€” when entering, when eating, when leaving, before sleep โ€” becomes inhospitable to negative spiritual influences. The home that does not is, by default, more vulnerable.

The dua for entering home is your daily act of claiming your household for Allah.

How to Build the Entering-Home Habit

This is one of the easiest habits to build because it has a clear trigger: the moment you enter your home. Same time, same place, every day. This is the perfect habit architecture.

Start with just Bismillah:

If the full dua is too much to remember right now, just say Bismillah โ€” "In the name of Allah" โ€” every time you walk through the door. This is the seed. The Prophet (peace be upon him) emphasized Bismillah as the foundation of every act.

Add the salam:

As soon as Bismillah is automatic (about 2 weeks), add the salam. Even if no one is home, say it. This honors the Quranic instruction (Surah An-Nur 24:61) and maintains the practice regardless of circumstances.

Then add the full dua:

Once Bismillah and salam are natural, add the full entering dua. It takes 10 seconds. Within a month, you will say it without thinking.

Physical trigger points:

  • The moment your hand touches the door
  • When you put your key in the lock
  • The instant your foot crosses the threshold

Pick one and anchor the dua to it. Consistency of trigger matters more than which trigger you choose.

Share it with your household:

If you live with family, teach them. A home where everyone says the dua and salam upon entering is a home that fills with remembrance multiple times a day without any single person having to carry all of it alone. This is how families build a shared spiritual culture.

The Spiritual Ecology of Your Home

The Prophet (peace be upon him) gave detailed guidance on making the home a place of light. Beyond the entering dua, he taught:

  • Pray voluntary prayers at home (not just the masjid) โ€” the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Do not make your homes like graves." (Sahih Muslim 778) The home that has no voluntary prayer in it is spiritually dead.
  • Recite Surah Al-Baqarah in the home โ€” the Prophet (peace be upon him) said Shaytan flees from the home in which it is recited. (Sahih Muslim 780)
  • Say the dua before eating and when entering
  • Say salam upon entering

Each of these practices alone is small. Together, they create an environment of barakah that affects every person living within it โ€” the parents, the children, the marriage, the relationships.

Your home reflects what you fill it with. Fill it with remembrance.

Dua when leaving home:

"In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, there is no power except with Allah." โ€” (Abu Dawud 5095)

This pairs with the entering dua. Your comings and goings become bookended with remembrance.

Dua for protection of the home:

A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq.

"I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created." โ€” (Sahih Muslim 2708)

Say this also when arriving at any place โ€” hotel, workplace, unfamiliar location. For a full guide on duas for protection, see our dedicated article.

Morning and evening adhkar protect the home too โ€” especially the three Quls blown toward the four corners. Incorporate these into your morning routine for complete coverage.

Common Questions

What if I come home very late and my family is asleep?

Say the dua and salam quietly. Scholars note that the salam upon entering applies even when people are sleeping โ€” you say it softly enough not to wake those asleep but loud enough to give salam to those who are awake. The Prophet (peace be upon him) used this practice himself.

Is there a special dua if I'm entering someone else's home?

Yes โ€” you ask permission (by knocking or calling) before entering, and the dua before entering changes slightly. The general dua still applies. When visiting, add: Allahumma barik lahum fi ma razaqtahum โ€” "O Allah, bless them in what You have provided for them."

My family does not practice. Am I the only one saying the dua?

Yes, and that is enough. Every time you say it, you are inviting blessing into your home. Your consistent practice may also gradually influence others. Do not wait for others to start โ€” be the first, and invite gently.

Do I say the dua every time I re-enter the home during the day?

Yes. Each entry is a new opportunity. If you go out to check the mail and come back in, say it again. The more times Allah's name is mentioned in your home, the more spiritually alive it becomes.

Closing

Your home is what you make it. Not with furniture or decor โ€” but with what fills the air when you enter.

Ten seconds at the door. That is all the dua for entering home requires. And in those ten seconds, you are doing something the Prophet (peace be upon him) modeled for us: making the threshold a point of conscious transition from the world into the place of peace.

Enter with Allah's name. Greet with salam. And let your home become what it is supposed to be.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the dua for entering home in Islam?

The dua for entering home is: Allahumma inni as'aluka khayral-mawliji wa khayral-mawlaj, bismillahi walajna wa bismillahi kharajna, wa 'alallahi rabbina tawakkalna โ€” O Allah, I ask You for the best of entering and the best of leaving. In the name of Allah we enter and in the name of Allah we leave, and upon Allah our Lord we rely. This is from Abu Dawud 5096.

Should I say salam when entering my own home?

Yes. Allah says in the Quran: When you enter homes, greet one another with a greeting from Allah, blessed and good (Surah An-Nur 24:61). The Prophet (peace be upon him) encouraged saying salam even when entering an empty home โ€” it is a blessing for you and for any angels present. Say As-salamu 'alaykum clearly when entering.

What happens if I forget to say the dua when entering home?

Say it when you remember. There is no penalty for forgetting, and the reminder to say it is itself beneficial. The goal is to build the habit until it is automatic โ€” which takes consistent repetition over 3-6 weeks. Forgetting is part of the process. Return to it without guilt.

Why is saying dua when entering the home important?

The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught that when a person mentions Allah's name upon entering, Shaytan says he has no place to stay or eat in that home. When the name is not mentioned, Shaytan announces to his companions that they have a place to stay. The dua sets the spiritual atmosphere of your home.

Is there a specific dua for leaving home too?

Yes. When leaving home, say: Bismillah, tawakkaltu 'alallahi, la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah โ€” In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, there is no power except with Allah (Abu Dawud 5095). This pairs with the entering dua, framing your comings and goings as acts of remembrance.
