In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Moving into a new home is one of those moments that feels significant even before you understand why. The empty rooms. The smell of fresh paint or old wood. The strange echo of your own footsteps in spaces that have not yet learned your rhythms.
There is something deeply human about wanting to bless a new dwelling โ to mark the beginning of life in a new space with something more than just boxes and furniture. In Islam, this instinct is not only understood but guided. Your home is not just a physical shelter. It is a spiritual space โ one that can be filled with barakah, protected from harm, and established as a place where Allah is remembered.
Here is how to begin that well.
The Dua for Entering Your New Home
Every time you enter your home, the Prophet ๏ทบ taught a specific supplication. On the first time you cross the threshold of your new home, say it with particular intention and presence:
ุจูุณูู ู ุงูููููู ููููุฌูููุง ููุจูุณูู ู ุงูููููู ุฎูุฑูุฌูููุง ููุนูููู ุงูููููู ุฑูุจููููุง ุชููููููููููุง
Bismillahi walajna wa-bismillahi kharajna wa-'ala Allahi rabbina tawakkalna.
"In the name of Allah we enter, in the name of Allah we leave, and upon our Lord we rely." โ (Abu Dawud 5096)
The narration continues that the Prophet ๏ทบ said when you say this, Shaytan says to his companions: "You have no place to stay here tonight." This is the power of establishing your home's entry with the name of Allah from the very first moment.
For the blessing of the home itself, make a personal, sincere dua in your own words โ asking Allah specifically for what you want this home to be. Ask for peace (sakina), for health for everyone who lives within it, for it to be a place where salah is prayed and Quran is recited and family relationships are nurtured. Make it specific to your situation.
The Story and Wisdom Behind It
The concept of a home in Islam goes beyond four walls and a roof. The Quran uses the home as a metaphor for protection, belonging, and sanctity. Allah says: "And Allah has made for you from your homes a place of rest." (Quran 16:80). Sukun โ rest, tranquility, stillness โ is the intended state of a home. It is the same root as sakina, the divine tranquility that descends in moments of worship and remembrance.
The Prophet ๏ทบ's guidance on the home is comprehensive:
He taught the dua for entering, the dua for leaving, the specific recitations for protection at night, and the central practice that drives away evil: the recitation of Surah Al-Baqarah.
"Recite Surah Al-Baqarah in your houses, for indeed Shaytan does not enter a house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited." (Muslim 780)
A home where Surah Al-Baqarah is regularly recited is described as a home where Shaytan cannot comfortably dwell. Beginning this practice from your first week in a new home โ before bad habits and spiritual neglect can take root โ is one of the most powerful investments you can make in your household.
How to Establish Your New Home Islamically
Moving into a new home is a fresh start. Here is how to use it:
On the first day, pray two rak'ahs of shukr. Before unpacking, before arranging furniture, establish that this home is a place where salah happens. Two rak'ahs of gratitude โ for the blessing of shelter, for the blessing of a new beginning โ mark the space as one where Allah is first.
Recite Surah Al-Baqarah in the first days. This does not have to be a single continuous recitation. Over the course of several sittings or days, complete it in your new home. Some families do it together, taking turns reading. Others play a recitation recording. The scholars differ on whether an audio recording fulfills the prescription โ to be safe, make the effort to recite it yourself or with family.
Establish the daily protective recitations as household habits. The dua for protection covers the morning and evening adhkar that protect you and your home. Build these into the household rhythm early, before other habits fill those time slots.
Say the entering dua every single time. The effect of the home protection comes not from a one-time blessing ceremony but from the ongoing practice of remembering Allah every time you cross the threshold. Make it a rule: no one enters without bismillah.
Pray salah in every room if possible. The Prophet ๏ทบ recommended praying voluntary prayers in the home. A home where salah is prayed in its corners is spiritually alive. If you pray sunnah prayers at home, this practice will naturally spread through the rooms.

Common Questions
Should I do a special Islamic ceremony when moving in?
There is no specific prescribed ceremony for moving into a new home in the Sunnah. The practices are straightforward: pray, make dua, recite Quran, and establish the entering dua as a household habit. Some families gather for a meal and communal dua โ this is fine and in keeping with the Islamic encouragement of gathering for good. Just avoid any innovated rituals that have no basis in the Sunnah.
What if my new home had bad energy from previous occupants?
Islam does not recognize "energy" as a fixed property of physical spaces. Shaytan can have presence in a home โ that is addressed through Surah Al-Baqarah and ongoing remembrance of Allah. Begin the recitation practices immediately, pray in the home, and make dua. The spiritual atmosphere of a home is determined by what happens in it now, not what happened before.
Do I need to have a scholar come to make dua?
This is a cultural practice in some communities, not a religious prescription. Having any Muslim who is knowledgeable and righteous make dua for your home is fine. But you do not need a scholar or an imam. You can make the dua yourself. Allah hears the dua of every believer equally.
Closing
Your new home is not just a change of address. It is an opportunity โ a clean space to establish new habits, new rhythms, a new relationship between your household and Allah.
Start with the dua when you enter. Recite Surah Al-Baqarah. Pray in its rooms. Gather with your family in remembrance. A home filled with the remembrance of Allah is the best kind of home there is.
May Allah fill your new home with peace, health, and His blessing.

Frequently Asked Questions
What dua should I say when entering a new home for the first time?
Say the general dua for entering any home: Bismillahi walajna wa-bismillahi kharajna wa-'ala Allahi rabbina tawakkalna โ In the name of Allah we enter, in the name of Allah we leave, and upon our Lord we rely. (Abu Dawud 5096). This should be said every time you enter your home, but saying it with special intention on the first entry into a new home sets a spiritual tone for the dwelling.
How do I seek barakah for a new home in Islam?
The most powerful practice for bringing barakah to a new home is to recite Surah Al-Baqarah. The Prophet said: Recite Surah Al-Baqarah in your homes, for indeed Shaytan does not enter a house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited. (Muslim 780). Begin doing this in your new home as early as possible. Also make personal dua for barakah in the home specifically.
Should I do anything special on the first night in a new home?
Pray two rak'ahs of thanksgiving for the blessing of a new home. Make sincere dua for the home to be filled with peace, health, and obedience to Allah. Recite Ayat al-Kursi (Quran 2:255) before sleeping as the Prophet prescribed for protection. (Bukhari 2311). Reciting Surah Al-Baqarah on the first night is also recommended by many scholars.
Can I have people make dua in my new home?
Yes โ inviting people to your home and sharing food is Sunnah, and asking for their dua is encouraged. You may have them recite Surah Al-Baqarah together, or simply gather and make dua for barakah, protection, and goodness in the home. The gathering of believers for remembrance of Allah brings its own blessing.
Is there a dua to protect the home from harm?
Yes. Reciting Ayat al-Kursi every night before sleeping, reciting the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah, and reciting the three Quls (Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas) three times morning and evening all provide protection for the home. The Prophet said these surahs protect against all evil. (Abu Dawud 1463). Making them a household routine protects everyone living there.
