In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

A vast open plain at golden hour, pilgrims as silhouettes on a hilltop with hands raised, warm amber and deep green sky

There is one day in the entire Islamic year when the doors of dua open wider than any other. One day when the Prophet (peace be upon him) said the best thing to say — the best thing he and every prophet before him said — is a single declaration. One day when Allah descends and boasts to the angels about those who are standing and asking.

That day is Arafah — the 9th of Dhul Hijjah.

If you knew a door to your most important meeting would only open for one day this year, you would not waste that day. You would prepare. You would bring everything you needed. You would stay until the door closed.

This is that day.

The Dua

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

"The best dua is the dua of the Day of Arafah. And the best thing I and the prophets before me have said is: La ilaha ill-Allah, wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir." — (Tirmidhi 3585)

"There is no god but Allah, alone, with no partner. To Him belongs all sovereignty and all praise, and He is over all things capable."

This is the best dua the Prophet and every prophet before him ever said. Say it as much as possible on this day.

For personal requests, use this framework:

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَارْحَمْنِي وَاهْدِنِي وَعَافِنِي وَارْزُقْنِي

Allahumma ighfir li warhamni wahdin-ni wa 'afin-i warzuqni.

"O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, grant me well-being, and provide for me." — (Muslim 2697)

The Story Behind It

On the Day of Arafah, the Prophet (peace be upon him) gave his farewell sermon to 100,000 Companions. After the sermon, this verse was revealed:

الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِي وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ الْإِسْلَامَ دِينًا

"Today I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and have chosen Islam as your religion." — (Quran 5:3)

Arafah is where Islam was completed. It is where the Prophet made his last major public address. And it is the site where, the Prophet said, Allah descends to the lowest heaven and says:

مَا شَأْنُ هَؤُلَاءِ؟ انْظُرُوا إِلَى عِبَادِي، أَتَوْنِي شُعْثًا غُبْرًا

"What is the state of these people? Look at My servants — they came to Me disheveled and dusty." — (Musnad Ahmad 14504)

He boasts about you — about the fact that you showed up, that you asked, that you came. The One who has no need of your worship still notices and mentions you to the angels when you stand and ask on this day.

How to Use Arafah If You Are Not on Hajj

Not everyone can stand at Arafah physically. But the blessing of the day is not limited to those who are there. The Prophet made this clear:

1. Fast if you are not on Hajj:

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said fasting on Arafah expiates two years of sins — the year before and the year after. (Muslim 1162) This is one of the most rewarding single-day fasts in Islam.

2. Spend the day in dhikr and dua:

From after Fajr until Maghrib, the goal is to maximize La ilaha ill-Allah, personal dua, Quran recitation, and istighfar. You do not need to stand at a mountain to receive the mercy of this day — you need to show up spiritually.

3. Make a dua list before the day arrives:

Write down the 10-15 things you most want to ask for. Forgiveness for specific sins. Health for specific people. Guidance for decisions you are facing. Ease for specific difficulties. When the day comes, you will not be scrambling to think of what to ask — you will be asking with intention and focus.

4. Ask for the ummah:

Do not make Arafah a day only for personal requests. The Muslim ummah is carrying heavy burdens. Ask for Palestine, for oppressed Muslims everywhere, for those in poverty and illness. The Prophet's Companions understood that the ummah's wellbeing was tied to each individual's dua.

Common Questions

What if I have to work on the Day of Arafah?

Fast if you can — that is the minimum. Between tasks, say La ilaha ill-Allah as much as possible. Use lunch breaks or commute time for personal dua. On this day, even busy dua is better than no dua. The intention to honor the day counts, and every moment you turn your heart to Allah while managing your responsibilities is rewarded.

Is it true that duas are definitely accepted on Arafah?

The hadith says khayr ud-du'a — the best dua, the highest-value dua. It is an opportunity, not an automatic guarantee. Every dua is subject to Allah's wisdom: He may grant it immediately, grant it later, or substitute it with something better. But the probability of acceptance is at its highest on this day. Treat it accordingly.

I made dua on Arafah last year and did not see results. Should I bother?

Yes. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "There is no Muslim who makes dua without sin or severing family ties but that Allah gives him one of three things: either He answers his dua immediately, or He stores it for him in the Hereafter, or He removes from him an equivalent of evil." (Ahmad 10749) Your dua was not wasted. It went somewhere. Keep asking.

Closing

The Day of Arafah comes once a year. It has come and gone for 1,400 years. Every year it arrives, and the question is the same: will you show up for it?

You do not need to be in Saudi Arabia to stand before Allah on this day. You need intention, fasting, dhikr, and dua. Prepare your list. Say La ilaha ill-Allah as many times as your tongue allows. Ask for everything. Then trust that the One who notices the disheveled pilgrim at Arafah also notices you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best dua for Arafah?

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The best dua is the dua of the Day of Arafah, and the best thing I and the prophets before me have said is: La ilaha ill-Allah, wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa ala kulli shayin qadir. (Tirmidhi 3585)

When is the Day of Arafah and when should I make dua?

The Day of Arafah is the 9th of Dhul Hijjah. Those on Hajj stand at Arafah from Dhuhr until sunset. Those not on Hajj should spend the entire day in dua, dhikr, fasting, and reciting La ilaha ill-Allah — especially between Dhuhr and Maghrib, which is the peak time.

Is fasting on Arafah required?

Fasting on the Day of Arafah is sunnah for those not performing Hajj. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Fasting on the Day of Arafah — I hope that Allah will accept it as expiation for the year before it and the year after it. (Sahih Muslim 1162)

What should I ask for on Arafah?

Ask for everything — this is the day when dua is most likely to be accepted. Prioritize: forgiveness, guidance, protection from the Fire, ease in this life, good death, Jannah. Ask for your family, your ummah, and for Muslims who are suffering. Do not hold back.

Can I make dua on Arafah if I am not performing Hajj?

Yes — and you should. The special status of the Day of Arafah applies to all Muslims, not just those on Hajj. Stay home, fast, make lots of dua, and say La ilaha ill-Allah as much as possible. This day is a gift for the whole ummah.
