In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

A person in formal clothing seen from behind, standing at a door with warm light ahead, symbolic threshold moment

You have prepared. You have researched the company. You have rehearsed answers. You know your resume.

And yet, the morning of the interview, your stomach is tight and your mind is running through every way this could go wrong.

This is the nafs at work โ€” creating scenarios of failure before anything has happened. And while preparation matters, preparation alone cannot give you what you actually need: sukun โ€” the deep calm that comes from knowing the outcome is in Allah's hands, not yours.

The duas before an interview are not a replacement for preparation. They are what you add on top of preparation to enter that room as a Muslim who trusts the One who controls every outcome.

The Duas

Dua of Musa (peace be upon him) โ€” for eloquence and clarity:

Rabbi ishrah li sadri, wa yassir li amri, wahlul uqdatan min lisani, yafqahu qawli.

"My Lord, expand my chest, ease my task, and untie the knot in my tongue, so they may understand my speech." โ€” (Quran 20:25-28)

This was the dua Musa (peace be upon him) made before walking into Pharaoh's palace. He was about to speak truth to the most powerful ruler on earth. He asked for three things: expanded chest (confidence and capacity), eased affairs (smooth proceedings), and untied tongue (clear communication).

Before any high-stakes conversation โ€” interview, presentation, difficult meeting โ€” this is the dua.

Dua for ease โ€” for when the task feels impossible:

Allahumma la sahla illa ma ja'altahu sahlan, wa anta taj'alul-hazna idha shi'ta sahlan.

"O Allah, there is no ease except in what You make easy, and You can make the difficult easy if You will." โ€” (Ibn Hibban 2427)

This dua is a complete theological reset. You are acknowledging that ease does not come from your skills or your preparation โ€” it comes from Allah making it easy. And He can do that whenever He wills, for any situation.

Dua before beginning anything important:

"In the name of Allah, I put my trust in Allah. There is no power and no strength except with Allah." โ€” (Abu Dawud 5095)

Say this as you enter the building. It hands the outcome to Allah before the conversation even starts.

The Story Behind It

Musa (peace be upon him) had every reason to be terrified. He had grown up in Pharaoh's palace, fled after killing a man, and spent years as a shepherd. Now Allah commanded him to go back and speak to the most powerful man alive, demanding the release of an entire enslaved people.

He did not say "I cannot do this." He asked for what he needed.

Rabbi ishrah li sadri โ€” expand my chest. He knew the task would require capacity beyond his natural state. He asked Allah to expand him for it.

Yafqahu qawli โ€” so they may understand my speech. He was not just asking to speak clearly. He was asking for his words to be received โ€” for hearts to open on the other side of the conversation. In an interview, you are asking the same thing: that your words land well, that you are understood as you intend to be understood.

Allah answered that dua. Musa walked into Pharaoh's presence and delivered one of the most consequential speeches in human history. He did it because the help he asked for was granted.

The same Lord is available to you before your interview.

How to Prepare Spiritually for an Interview

The night before:

  • Pray Isha, read your evening adhkar, and make dua in sujood specifically about the interview
  • Ask Allah to make you the best candidate if this job is good for you, and to protect you from it if it is not
  • Go to sleep early โ€” rest is part of preparation, and the Prophet emphasized the importance of taking care of the body

The morning of:

  • Pray Fajr on time. Start the most important day with the most important prayer.
  • After Fajr, pray two rakahs of Salat al-Hajah (the prayer for a specific need) and make specific dua about the interview
  • While getting dressed and ready, say Allahumma la sahla illa ma ja'altahu sahlan repeatedly
  • When you leave the house, say the leaving-the-house dua and then Bismillahi tawakkaltu 'alallah

On the way and before entering:

  • Use the commute for Salawat on the Prophet and for Musa's dua (Quran 20:25-28)
  • Before entering the building or the room, pause for three seconds, breathe, and say Bismillahi tawakkaltu 'alallah

During the interview:

  • If your mind goes blank or you feel flustered, pause briefly and say internally La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah โ€” it is a reset for the nafs in moments of pressure
  • Answer honestly โ€” the Prophet said: "Honesty leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Jannah." (Bukhari 6094) An interview won through impression management alone is not a foundation you want to build on.

Dua for success: The interview is a step toward a goal. Pair the pre-interview dua with the dua for success โ€” covering the broader supplications for your efforts to bear fruit.

Dua for ease: After the interview, if you are waiting on a result and the anxiety is building, use the dua for health and ease to manage the uncertainty while waiting.

Dua for rizq: Ultimately, a job is about provision. Deepen your practice with the dua for rizq โ€” reminding yourself that provision comes from Ar-Razzaq, not from any employer.

Common Questions

Should I pray Salat al-Istikhara before an interview?

Salat al-Istikhara is for decisions you are uncertain about โ€” whether to take a job, whether to pursue an opportunity. If you have already decided you want this job and you are simply preparing for the interview, Istikhara is not the prayer for this moment. Use it when you receive an offer and need clarity on whether to accept. For the interview itself, use Salat al-Hajah (prayer for a need).

What if I still feel nervous even after making dua?

Nervousness is not the opposite of tawakkul. It is a human response to uncertainty and high stakes. The Prophet (peace be upon him) and his Companions felt fear โ€” what tawakkul does is not remove the feeling but it changes your relationship to it. You can be nervous and still trust Allah. The dua is not asking for the absence of nerves โ€” it is asking for expanded capacity to handle what you face. Both can be true at once.

I did not pray before my last interview and I got the job. Is dua even necessary?

Your rizq is from Allah regardless of whether you acknowledged it. Getting the job without dua does not mean dua was unnecessary โ€” it means Allah provided even without being formally asked. But the point of dua is not only to receive what you want. It is to maintain connection, develop tawakkul, and acknowledge your dependence on Allah. That relationship has long-term value that a single interview outcome cannot measure.

Closing

You are as ready as you are going to be. You have done the preparation. What is left is to hand it over.

Say the duas. Walk in with bismillah. Speak honestly. Then trust that the One who controls every human heart โ€” including those of the interviewers โ€” has already decided the outcome.

Your job was never to guarantee a result. Your job was to prepare, show up, and trust.

Frequently Asked Questions

What dua should I read before a job interview?

Read the dua of Musa (peace be upon him) before speaking: Rabbi ishrah li sadri wa yassir li amri wahlul uqdatan min lisani yafqahu qawli (Quran 20:25-28) โ€” O my Lord, expand my chest, ease my affairs, and untie the knot in my tongue so they may understand my speech.

Is there a dua for confidence before an interview?

Yes: Allahumma la sahla illa ma ja'altahu sahlan wa anta taj'alus-sa'ba idha shi'ta sahlan โ€” O Allah, nothing is easy except what You make easy, and You can make the difficult easy if You will. (Ibn Hibban 2427) Say this while getting ready for your interview.

What dua did Prophet Musa say before speaking to Pharaoh?

Rabbi ishrah li sadri, wa yassir li amri, wahlul uqdatan min lisani, yafqahu qawli (Quran 20:25-28) โ€” My Lord, expand my chest, ease my task, and untie the knot in my tongue, so they may understand my speech. This is the most powerful dua for clarity and eloquence before any high-stakes conversation.

What should I do spiritually to prepare for an interview?

Pray two rakahs of voluntary prayer (Salat al-Hajah) before leaving for the interview. Make dua in sujood. Recite the ease dua and Musa's dua. Then make wudu, dress well, and leave with tawakkul โ€” you have done your part, Allah controls the outcome.

What if I prepare well but do not get the job?

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Wonderful is the affair of the believer โ€” if good comes he is grateful, if harm comes he is patient, and both are good for him. (Sahih Muslim 2999) If you do not get a job you prepared for, that result is from Allah. He may be protecting you from something or directing you toward something better. Keep making dua and keep trying.
