In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

There is one night each year where every hour of worship counts as more than 83 years of worship. One night where the angels descend, where the mercy of Allah floods the earth, where the fate of the coming year is decreed.

That night is Laylatul Qadr โ€” the Night of Power.

And the specific dua the Prophet (peace be upon him) taught his beloved wife Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) for this night is not complicated. It is not long. It is four words that go directly to the heart of what every Muslim needs most.

The Dua for Laylatul Qadr

Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul-'afwa fa'fu 'anni.

"O Allah, You are the Pardoner and You love to pardon, so pardon me." โ€” (Al-Tirmidhi 3513, Ibn Majah 3850)

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "I asked the Prophet (peace be upon him): 'O Messenger of Allah, if I know which night is Laylatul Qadr, what should I say in it?' He said: 'Say: Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul-'afwa fa'fu 'anni.'"

This is the definitive dua for Laylatul Qadr. It comes directly from the Prophet. It was specifically requested by Aisha โ€” someone who spent more nights near the Prophet than almost anyone. And the dua she was given is about pardon.

Think about that. On the greatest night of the year โ€” the night of cosmic spiritual significance โ€” the best thing you can ask for is forgiveness.

Not wealth. Not success. Not health. Not even jannah directly.

Pardon me.

The Story Behind the Dua

Surah Al-Qadr โ€” the entire surah dedicated to this night โ€” describes it as a night "better than a thousand months" (97:3). The angels and the spirit descend with every matter by their Lord's permission. It is peace until the dawn.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) would intensify his worship dramatically in the last ten nights. Aisha reported: "When the last ten days of Ramadan came, the Prophet (peace be upon him) would stay up all night, wake up his family, and tighten his waist belt." (Sahih al-Bukhari 2024)

The choice to give Aisha the pardon dua specifically says something profound about Islamic spirituality. The greatest night of the year is not primarily about asking for things. It is about the relationship โ€” acknowledging that you are a servant who has failed, that Allah is a Lord who loves to forgive, and that the most important thing you can ask for is that your record be cleared.

When your record is cleared, everything else becomes possible.

How to Prepare for Laylatul Qadr

Laylatul Qadr does not just happen to you. You enter it prepared or you miss it while it passes.

Seek it on all odd nights:

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Seek Laylatul Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan." (Sahih al-Bukhari 2020) Odd nights: 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, 29th. Treat all five as potential. Do not gamble on just the 27th.

Build up before the last ten:

The last ten nights require stamina. If you have been skipping Tarawih, barely making Fajr, and exhausting yourself during the day, the last ten will be difficult to maximize. Use the first twenty days of Ramadan to build the habits โ€” consistent Tarawih, Fajr, Quran, and dhikr โ€” so you arrive at the last ten nights with spiritual momentum.

Night routine for the odd nights:

  1. After Isha and Tarawih, rest briefly if needed
  2. Wake for Tahajjud in the last third of the night (this is when Allah's special attention is most intense)
  3. Make sujood โ€” prostrate and repeat Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul-'afwa fa'fu 'anni repeatedly
  4. Make personal dua for yourself, your family, your community, the ummah
  5. Recite Quran โ€” even one page with reflection is better than twenty pages on autopilot
  6. Recite the morning adhkar as Fajr approaches
  7. Pray Fajr

This does not require staying awake from Isha to Fajr every night. Wake at 2 AM, pray tahajjud, make dua until Fajr, then sleep.

Additional Duas for the Last Ten Nights

Dua for forgiveness (the core dua to repeat):

The Laylatul Qadr dua itself is the primary supplication. Repeat it constantly throughout the night โ€” in sujood, in sitting, in your heart between recitations.

Dua to say in sujood (the closest a servant is to Allah):

Allahummaghfir li dhanbi kullahu, diqqahu wa jillahu, wa awwalahu wa akhirahu, wa 'alaniyyatahu wa sirrahu.

"O Allah, forgive all my sins โ€” small and large, the first and the last, the public and the private." โ€” (Sahih Muslim 483)

This is a comprehensive forgiveness dua that covers every category of sin. Say it in sujood where your request is closest to acceptance.

Protecting the Momentum After Ramadan

One of the most painful experiences for practicing Muslims is the spiritual cliff after Ramadan. The intensity of the last ten nights, followed by Eid, followed by a return to normal life โ€” and suddenly the connection feels distant.

The antidote is built during Laylatul Qadr itself. When you ask fa'fu 'anni (pardon me) with sincerity, you are also implicitly committing to the life that follows the pardon. A person who receives pardon and then immediately returns to the same sins has not really internalized the pardon.

Use Laylatul Qadr to set your intentions for the year ahead. What habit will you build? What sin will you leave? What relationship with Allah will you sustain?

The night is an opportunity. What you do with the morning after โ€” and the months after โ€” is where it becomes real.

Common Questions

What if I don't know the Arabic dua perfectly?

Start learning it now. The dua is 9 words of Arabic: Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul-'afwa fa'fu 'anni. Write it on a card. Put it on your phone. Say it in your prayers tonight. By the time Ramadan comes, you will know it by heart. And say it in your own language too โ€” Allah understands every language, and meaning matters more than perfect pronunciation.

Can I make dua for others on Laylatul Qadr?

Absolutely. Many scholars encourage comprehensive dua on this night โ€” for yourself, your parents, your family, your deceased loved ones, and the entire Muslim ummah. The night is vast and Allah's generosity is infinite. Do not limit your dua only to yourself.

I missed the last ten nights in previous years. Is it too late?

It is never too late. Each year brings a new Ramadan and a new Laylatul Qadr. The Prophet (peace be upon him) did not say "Seek it if you have been good all year." He said seek it โ€” full stop. Your past is between you and Allah. Show up this year with sincerity and let Allah handle the rest. That sincerity itself is a form of pardon.

What signs might indicate it is Laylatul Qadr?

The Prophet (peace be upon him) described it as a night that is peaceful, neither hot nor cold, and the next morning the sun rises without rays (like a disk). However, scholars advise against focusing on signs โ€” the practice of worship is not dependent on confirming the sign. Seek it on all five odd nights with full effort.

Closing

The Night of Power is coming. And the most important thing you can do when it arrives is not complicated.

Say four words with a full heart:

Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul-'afwa fa'fu 'anni.

You are the Pardoner. You love to pardon. Pardon me.

That is it. That is what the Prophet (peace be upon him) told his most beloved wife to say on the greatest night of the year.

Say it in sujood. Say it between rakats. Say it in the dark before Fajr. Say it until your heart means every word of it.

And then carry that sincerity into the year that follows.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the dua for Laylatul Qadr?

The specific dua for Laylatul Qadr is: Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul-'afwa fa'fu 'anni โ€” O Allah, You are the Pardoner and You love to pardon, so pardon me. This was the dua the Prophet (peace be upon him) specifically taught Aisha (RA) for Laylatul Qadr, recorded in Al-Tirmidhi 3513 and Ibn Majah 3850.

When is Laylatul Qadr?

Laylatul Qadr falls in the last 10 nights of Ramadan, most likely on odd nights (21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, 29th). The 27th night is most widely cited, though scholars emphasize seeking it throughout all odd nights. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to seek it in the last ten nights (Sahih al-Bukhari 2020).

What should I do on Laylatul Qadr?

The Prophet (peace be upon him) would intensify his worship in the last 10 nights: staying up for prayer (qiyam), increasing Quran recitation, making extended dua, giving charity, and doing itikaf (seclusion in the masjid). Start with what you can: pray extra rakats after Isha, recite Quran, and repeat the Laylatul Qadr dua.

How many times should I say the Laylatul Qadr dua?

Repeat it as many times as you wish throughout the night โ€” after Isha, between Tarawih, in Tahajjud, during sujood, and especially in the last third of the night when Allah descends and answers supplications. There is no fixed number. Say it with presence and meaning each time.

Is Laylatul Qadr only in Ramadan?

Yes. Laylatul Qadr is specific to Ramadan and occurs annually. Allah says in the Quran that this is the night when angels and the Spirit descend by their Lord's permission, and it is peace until the dawn (Surah Al-Qadr, 97:4-5). It is better than 1000 months of worship โ€” approximately 83 years.
