In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Imagine spending your entire life building something for Allah. Leaving your family in a barren valley. Nearly sacrificing your son. Constructing the first House of Allah on earth, stone by stone, with your own hands. And then finishing and immediately saying: "O Allah โ€” please accept it."

This is what Ibrahim ๏ทบ and his son Isma'il ๏ทบ did while building the Ka'bah. In the middle of one of the greatest acts of worship in all of Islamic history, they feared it would not be accepted.

If two prophets of Allah, performing a deed commanded directly by Allah, still made dua for acceptance โ€” what does that tell you about your own prayers, fasts, and charity?

It tells you that acceptance is never something to assume. It is always something to ask for.

The Dua for Acceptance of Deeds

The dua of Ibrahim and Isma'il โ€” while building the Ka'bah:

ุฑูŽุจูŽู‘ู†ูŽุง ุชูŽู‚ูŽุจูŽู‘ู„ู’ ู…ูู†ูŽู‘ุง ุฅูู†ูŽู‘ูƒูŽ ุฃูŽู†ุชูŽ ุงู„ุณูŽู‘ู…ููŠุนู ุงู„ู’ุนูŽู„ููŠู…ู

Rabbana taqabbal minna innaka anta as-sami'ul 'alim.

"Our Lord, accept from us. Indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing." โ€” (Quran 2:127)

The dua of Sulayman ๏ทบ โ€” asking for deeds that please Allah:

Rabbi awzi'ni an ashkura ni'mataka allati an'amta 'alayya wa 'ala walidayya wa an a'mala salihan tardah.

"My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to do righteousness of which You will approve." โ€” (Quran 27:19)

The first dua is the raw, essential request: accept from us. No elaborate qualification. No list of credentials. Just a recognition that acceptance belongs entirely to Allah, and a direct request for it.

The second goes further: not just asking for acceptance of past deeds, but asking for the capacity to do deeds that will be acceptable in the future.

The Story Behind It

The verse in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:127) is one of the most quietly devastating passages in the Quran when you sit with it long enough. Here is the scene:

Ibrahim ๏ทบ and Isma'il ๏ทบ are raising the foundations of the Ka'bah โ€” the house that billions of Muslims face in prayer to this day. This is not an optional extra. This is one of the defining acts of the entire religion. They are doing it because Allah commanded it. They are doing it with sincerity and sacrifice beyond what most humans will ever be called to.

And the entire time they are doing it, they are saying: Rabbana taqabbal minna.

The scholars note something important about this verse. The Arabic root qabila (to accept) implies more than acknowledgment โ€” it means to receive something with approval and pleasure. Ibrahim and Isma'il were not just asking Allah to receive the action. They were asking Him to be pleased with it.

This is the level of concern the greatest Muslims had about their deeds. Not arrogance. Not assumption. Constant, hopeful, humble asking.

'Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) once asked the Prophet ๏ทบ about the verse in Surah Al-Mu'minun: "those who give what they give while their hearts are fearful" (23:60). She asked: are these the people who commit sins while fearing the punishment? He said no โ€” they are the people who fast, pray, and give charity while fearing it will not be accepted. (Tirmidhi 3175)

This is the attitude of the sincere Muslim: performing worship diligently and still making dua for acceptance.

How to Make This Dua Part of Your Practice

The dua for acceptance of deeds should not only appear after major events. It belongs in your regular daily practice.

Say it after every prayer. The post-prayer moment โ€” before you rise from your prayer mat โ€” is the perfect time for Rabbana taqabbal minna. You have just completed an act of worship. The immediate follow-up is to ask Allah to accept it. This takes five seconds and transforms how you relate to Salah over time.

Say it after any significant act of worship. After you finish your morning adhkar, after you complete a fast, after you give sadaqah, after you finish reading Quran โ€” say Rabbana taqabbal minna. This habit makes every act of worship feel like a transaction completed with Allah, not a task checked off a list.

Make it your post-Ramadan dua. The first days of Shawwal โ€” right after Ramadan โ€” are when this dua is most commonly emphasized. You have just completed a month of fasting, prayer, and charity. The question is not whether you completed it, but whether it was accepted. This dua is how you submit that question to Allah.

Use Sulayman's dua as a forward-looking practice. Rabbi awzi'ni an a'mala salihan tardah โ€” asking for the capacity to do deeds that will please Allah โ€” is a dua you can make at the start of any new period: a new week, a new month, a new year. It frames your intention and invites Allah's enablement before you begin.

Pair it with istighfar. The scholars explain that deeds can be prevented from acceptance by sins. Consistent seeking of forgiveness clears the spiritual obstructions that can block acceptance. Rabbana taqabbal minna and Astaghfirullah work together as a pair.

Dua for forgiveness: Sins are one of the main barriers to acceptance. The dua for forgiveness covers the Prophet's supplications for seeking Allah's pardon โ€” a necessary companion to the dua for acceptance.

Dua for ikhlas: The primary condition for acceptance is sincerity. The dua for ikhlas covers how to ask Allah to purify your intention so your deeds have the inner quality that makes acceptance possible.

Dua for the last 10 days of Ramadan: The duas for the last 10 nights of Ramadan include specific supplications for these highest-value nights โ€” a natural moment to intensify your dua for acceptance.

Common Questions

Does asking for acceptance mean my deeds might be rejected?

It means you understand that acceptance is Allah's to give, not yours to assume. This is not pessimism โ€” it is tawadu' (humility). The scholars say the sign of a deed being accepted is that it is followed by more good deeds. If your Ramadan leads to a better daily practice afterward, that is a sign of acceptance. If it leaves no trace by Shawwal, that is a sign to reflect.

How do I know if my deeds have been accepted?

There is no guaranteed indicator in this life. The Prophet ๏ทบ said that one of the signs of an accepted deed is that Allah makes you forget the deed โ€” you do not keep mentally reviewing it for validation. Another sign: the deed leads to more good deeds. A third: a feeling of humility and smallness rather than pride after performing worship.

What sins prevent deeds from being accepted?

The scholars mention: consuming haram wealth or food, harboring grudges against fellow Muslims, cutting family ties, and persistent sin while making dua. The Prophet ๏ทบ mentioned the man who makes dua with hands raised to heaven but whose food, drink, and clothing are haram โ€” how can such a person's dua be accepted? (Muslim 1015). Addressing these spiritual blockages is part of making dua for acceptance meaningful.

Closing

Ibrahim ๏ทบ built the Ka'bah and said: accept from us. Sulayman ๏ทบ, given a kingdom unmatched in history, asked Allah to enable him to do deeds that please Him. These are the men whose deeds we still speak about thousands of years later.

And they still asked for acceptance.

You should too. Not with fear that paralyzes, but with humility that keeps you honest about who you are and who Allah is. Say this dua. Say it after every prayer. Say it after Ramadan, after charity, after any good you do.

Leave the acceptance with Allah. Your job is to ask โ€” sincerely, consistently, and without assuming.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the dua for acceptance of deeds?

The most powerful dua for acceptance of deeds is from the Quran: Rabbana taqabbal minna innaka anta as-sami'ul 'alim โ€” Our Lord, accept from us. Indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. (Quran 2:127). Ibrahim and Isma'il said this while building the Ka'bah โ€” they feared their deeds would not be accepted even as they performed one of the greatest acts in Islamic history.

Should I worry about whether my deeds are accepted?

Yes โ€” this is actually a sign of faith, not anxiety. Allah says in the Quran that those who give what they give while their hearts are fearful because they are returning to their Lord โ€” these are the ones racing toward good deeds. (Quran 23:60-61). The Companions used to worry deeply about acceptance. This concern pushes you toward sincerity and consistency, which are the main conditions for acceptance.

What are the conditions for deeds being accepted?

Scholars identify two main conditions: ikhlas (sincerity โ€” doing the deed purely for Allah) and ittiba' (following the Prophet's method โ€” doing it correctly). A deed that lacks either condition is at risk of not being accepted. This is why the dua for acceptance is so important: you acknowledge that the conditions are your responsibility, but the acceptance itself is Allah's gift.

Is there a special time to make the dua for acceptance of deeds?

Yes โ€” the period right after Ramadan is particularly emphasized. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Prophet ๏ทบ would stand in prayer all night and fast during the last ten days of Ramadan more than any other time, driven by concern for acceptance. (Tirmidhi 3175). After any major act of worship โ€” Hajj, Ramadan, or a significant charity โ€” making this dua is especially fitting.

Why did Ibrahim and Isma'il worry about acceptance while building the Ka'bah?

This is one of the most profound lessons in the Quran. Ibrahim and Isma'il were two of the greatest prophets, performing one of the greatest acts of worship in history, at Allah's direct command. And they still feared the deed might not be accepted. This teaches that status and outward correctness are not sufficient โ€” acceptance is always in Allah's hands, not ours to assume.
