Why This Dua Matters
You already know the feeling.
That moment after you did something you said you would not do again — checked what you were not supposed to check, said what you should have kept quiet, let the hours slip by without prayer or remembrance. The heaviness that settles in is real. What you do with that heaviness determines everything.
Some people let it become shame, and shame becomes distance from Allah. Others turn it into istighfar, and istighfar becomes closeness.
Istighfar — seeking forgiveness — is not a formality. It is one of the most active and powerful practices in Islam, one the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed 100 times every single day despite being already forgiven. That fact alone tells you something important: this is not about guilt management. It is a spiritual practice that keeps the heart clean and the connection to Allah alive.
The Dua — Sayyid al-Istighfar
The Prophet (peace be upon him) called this "the master of all supplications for forgiveness":
A'udhu bika min sharri ma sana't. Abu'u laka bi-ni'matika 'alayya wa abu'u laka bi-dhanbi. Faghfir li fa-innahu la yaghfirudh-dhunuba illa ant.
"O Allah, You are my Lord. There is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant. I am upon Your covenant and promise as best I can. I seek refuge with You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favor upon me, and I acknowledge my sin — so forgive me, for indeed no one forgives sins except You." — (Sahih Bukhari 6306)
The Prophet's promise: "Whoever says this in the morning with firm belief in it, and then dies before evening, will enter Paradise. And whoever says this in the evening with firm belief in it, and then dies before morning, will enter Paradise." (Sahih Bukhari 6306)
This is one dua, said once with sincerity, that the Prophet attached a promise of Paradise to. Say it every morning. Say it every evening. Let it be the bookmarks of your day.
For constant istighfar throughout the day:
أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ
Astaghfirullah.
"I seek forgiveness from Allah."
Simple. Immediate. Infinite in availability. This is what the Prophet returned to 70-100 times daily — not in long sittings but throughout the day, between conversations, after prayers, in moments of stillness.
The Story Behind It
The narration from Agharr al-Muzani is one of the most striking in the hadith literature: "The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: My heart is sometimes covered, and I seek forgiveness from Allah 100 times a day." (Sahih Muslim 2702)
"My heart is sometimes covered." The Prophet — who was protected from major sins, who received revelation, who was closest to Allah of all creation — described a state of spiritual cloudiness in himself. And his response to that cloudiness was not self-criticism or paralysis. It was istighfar. Immediately, consistently, 100 times.
This is the most important thing to understand about the dua for istighfar: it is not evidence that you are far from Allah. It is the practice of staying close.
The Prophet Nuh (AS) called his entire people to istighfar and promised them worldly abundance as a consequence — rain, wealth, children, gardens, rivers. (Surah Nuh, 71:10-12). Scholars explain this by noting that sins create rankha — a spiritual obstruction — between a person and their sustenance. Istighfar removes the obstruction. It is not merely spiritual: it affects the material conditions of your life.
How to Build the Istighfar Habit
The Prophet's practice was not 100 istighfars in one dedicated sitting — it was woven throughout the day. Here is how to replicate that:
After each prayer: Add 33 Astaghfirullah to your post-prayer dhikr. Three prayers give you almost 100 automatically. This is the most natural anchor point — you are already stopping for salah, already in a state of spiritual attention.
Morning and evening: Say the Sayyid al-Istighfar once in the morning and once in the evening. These two recitations, said with genuine presence, carry the full prophetic promise of Paradise.
As a walking practice: Astaghfirullah requires no preparation, no wudu, no particular place. Say it in the car, while walking, while waiting. The nafs generates small wrong thoughts and dispositions constantly — istighfar is the ongoing cleansing practice.
After moments of weakness: When you slip — when the anger comes out, when you check what you should not, when a prayer is missed — say Astaghfirullah immediately. Do not delay it to a "proper" time. The faster you return, the shorter the distance you have traveled from Allah.
The 100-day challenge: Commit to 100 Astaghfirullah per day for 100 days. Track it. Notice what changes — in your heart, in your ease, in your circumstances.

Common Questions
Is there a difference between istighfar and tawbah?
Yes. Astaghfirullah — istighfar — is asking Allah for forgiveness and covering of sins. Tawbah is the full act of repentance: acknowledging the sin, feeling genuine remorse, stopping the sin, and intending not to return. Tawbah is more complete. Istighfar can be said constantly throughout the day without each repetition necessarily meeting the conditions of tawbah. Both are important and work together.
Can I say istighfar for sins I cannot remember?
Yes — this is one of the functions of the Sayyid al-Istighfar specifically. The phrase Abu'u laka bi-dhanbi (I acknowledge my sin) is general enough to cover sins you have forgotten, did not recognize at the time, or are not fully aware of. The Prophet's 100 daily repetitions covered all such categories.
What if istighfar feels mechanical and not sincere?
Sincerity is a practice, not a permanent state. Start with the words even when you do not fully feel them — the Prophet said actions form the heart as much as the heart forms actions. Over time, presence grows within the practice. If you are finding it completely mechanical, try saying it fewer times with genuine attention rather than many times on autopilot. Quality and quantity can both be adjusted.
Does istighfar remove the need to make amends with people I have wronged?
No. If you have wronged someone, making amends — returning property, apologizing, settling debts — is a separate obligation that istighfar to Allah does not replace. The Prophet (peace be upon him) distinguished between rights owed to Allah (which tawbah and istighfar can address) and rights owed to people (which require direct redress).
Closing
The Prophet (peace be upon him) was the most spiritually elevated human being who ever lived, and he made istighfar 100 times a day.
If he did it, there is no discussion to be had about whether you need it. The question is only whether you will build the practice — or keep meaning to start tomorrow.
Start today. Say the Sayyid al-Istighfar this morning. Say Astaghfirullah 70 times before you sleep tonight. Then again tomorrow. And the day after.
The heart that returns to Allah regularly, through the simple act of seeking forgiveness, is a heart that stays connected — regardless of what it has done.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best dua for istighfar?
The best dua for istighfar is the Sayyid al-Istighfar (Master of Seeking Forgiveness): Allahumma anta rabbi, la ilaha illa anta, khalaqtani wa ana abduk, wa ana 'ala 'ahdika wa wa'dika mastata't. A'udhu bika min sharri ma sana't. Abu'u laka bi-ni'matika 'alayya wa abu'u laka bi-dhanbi. Faghfir li fa-innahu la yaghfirudh-dhunuba illa ant. The Prophet said whoever says this once in the morning with belief and dies before evening enters Paradise (Sahih Bukhari 6306).
How many times should I say Astaghfirullah?
The Prophet (peace be upon him) made istighfar 70-100 times per day (Sahih Muslim 2702, Sahih Bukhari 6307). He was already forgiven — yet he maintained this practice. For us, 100 times daily is the prophetic standard. Start with 33 after each prayer (making 165 daily) or 70-100 in one sitting if that fits your routine better.
What is the meaning of istighfar?
Istighfar comes from the Arabic root gh-f-r, meaning to cover, protect, and forgive. Making istighfar means asking Allah to cover your sins, protect you from their consequences, and grant you pardon. It is not just saying sorry — it is acknowledging that Allah alone has the authority to forgive and requesting that He exercise that authority on your behalf.
Does istighfar have worldly benefits besides spiritual ones?
Yes. The Prophet Nuh (AS) told his people: Ask forgiveness of your Lord — indeed He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver. He will send rain upon you in continuing showers and give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers (Surah Nuh 71:10-12). Scholars explain that istighfar removes the barriers that sins create between a person and their sustenance, health, and ease.
What if I keep sinning after making istighfar?
Keep making istighfar. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Allah said — O son of Adam, if you sin until your sins reach the clouds of the sky, then you ask Me for forgiveness, I will forgive you (Tirmidhi 3540). There is no point at which istighfar stops working. The concern should not be that you return to sin — it should be that you stop returning to Allah.
