In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

A simple clay cup of water on a wooden surface with morning light filtering through a latticed window, soft cream and gold tones

You drink water dozens of times a day. Every time your throat is dry, every time you sit down to eat, every time you walk past a water fountain. Water is so ordinary, so constant, so available โ€” that it is almost invisible. You barely register the act of drinking.

But imagine going without it for a single day. The body seizes. The mind cannot function. Three days without water and life ends. This miraculous, life-sustaining gift from Allah flows from your tap, fills your bottle, and quenches your thirst without you ever thinking about where it came from.

That is exactly the problem. And the dua after drinking water is the solution.

The Dua

ุงู„ู’ุญูŽู…ู’ุฏู ู„ูู„ูŽู‘ู‡ู

Alhamdulillah.

"All praise is for Allah."

Simple. One word of gratitude after every drink. This is the foundation.

Extended version โ€” incorporating the full Sunnah of drinking:

Before: Bismillah.

Drink in three sips, not one gulp.

After:

Alhamdulillahil-ladhi ja'alal-ma'a 'adhban furatan bi-rahmatihi wa lam yaj'alhu milhan ujajan bidhunubina.

"All praise is for Allah who, by His mercy, made water sweet and fresh, and did not make it salty and bitter because of our sins."

This narration captures something profound: the sweetness of water is an active mercy from Allah, not a natural default. Our sins could have made it otherwise โ€” yet He gave us sweetness.

When to do it: Every single time you drink โ€” morning glass of water, mid-day hydration, cup of tea. The habit is the same.

The Story Behind It

There is a narration that when the Prophet (peace be upon him) finished drinking milk, he would say:

ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ูู…ูŽู‘ ุจูŽุงุฑููƒู’ ู„ูŽู†ูŽุง ูููŠู‡ู ูˆูŽุฒูุฏู’ู†ูŽุง ู…ูู†ู’ู‡ู

Allahumma barik lana fihi wa zidna minhu.

"O Allah, bless us in it and give us more of it." โ€” (Sunan Abu Dawud 3730)

For water โ€” which the Prophet (peace be upon him) described as the master of drinks โ€” the response of gratitude was built into every occasion of drinking. Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to breathe three times into a drink (meaning pause for three separate sips), saying: "It is more wholesome and more satisfying" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5631).

The three-sip practice is itself a form of mindfulness. Each sip becomes a separate, conscious act rather than one automatic gulp. Each sip is an opportunity for Bismillah and the awareness that this water is a gift.

The Quran asks repeatedly about water โ€” "Have you considered the water you drink? Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We?" (Surah Al-Waqi'ah, 56:68-69). The dua after drinking water is your daily answer to that question.

How to Make This Dua Part of Your Daily Life

The challenge with dua after drinking is similar to dua before eating: the action is so automatic that the moment passes before the mind engages. The key is to use the physical sensation of drinking as the cue.

The trigger-routine-reward loop:

  • Trigger: The moment you put down your glass or bottle after drinking
  • Routine: Say Alhamdulillah
  • Reward: The conscious awareness that you were just sustained by Allah's mercy

Train this until setting down the glass automatically means Alhamdulillah exits your mouth.

The three-sip practice: The Sunnah of drinking in three sips naturally creates pauses โ€” and pauses are where habits are built. Use the first sip as the opening (Bismillah), the middle sip as a moment of presence, and the final sip as the closing (Alhamdulillah). This transforms a two-second habit into a three-step mindfulness practice.

Connect it to your shukr practice: The dua after drinking water pairs naturally with a broader practice of shukr (gratitude). The practice of shukr is one of the highest stations of the believer. Every Alhamdulillah after drinking is a small installment in a life of gratitude.

With children: Make it a family game. Who remembered Bismillah? Who said Alhamdulillah? Children learn these habits faster when they feel like participation, not obligation. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught these habits to young companions with gentleness and practical instruction.

Common Questions

Is it Sunnah to drink water in three sips specifically, or is that just a recommendation?

It is an established Sunnah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) specifically instructed against drinking in one gulp. The majority of scholars say drinking in two or three sips is recommended (mustahabb), while drinking in one continuous pour is disliked. Three sips is the established practice.

Can I say the dua in English?

Yes. Allah understands every language. However, learning the Arabic is recommended because it connects you to the exact words and sounds of the Prophetic tradition, and Arabic dhikr has a particular quality of barakah in its recitation. Start with Alhamdulillah โ€” three syllables that are easy to memorize.

What about when I am very thirsty and drink a lot quickly?

Intention matters as much as execution. If you are genuinely very thirsty and drink more quickly than the Sunnah recommends, that is understandable. The key is to begin with Bismillah and end with Alhamdulillah. These two bookends preserve the spirit of the Sunnah even when the three-sip structure is not perfectly maintained.

Does this apply to all drinks or just water?

The Bismillah-before and Alhamdulillah-after etiquette applies to all halal food and drink. The specific three-sip practice is mentioned in narrations about water specifically, but the principle of not gulping extends to all drinking.

Closing

Water is the most ordinary thing in your life. It is also the most essential. Every glass is a quiet miracle of provision โ€” clouds that formed over oceans, rain that fell on mountains, filtered and piped directly to your home, available whenever you need it.

The dua after drinking water takes two seconds. Bismillah before. Alhamdulillah after. Three sips in between. That is it. But do it consistently, and what was invisible becomes visible. What was automatic becomes intentional. What was just water becomes a moment of worship.

That is the power of even the smallest Sunnah, lived every day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the dua after drinking water?

The authentic Sunnah is to say 'Alhamdulillah' โ€” All praise is for Allah โ€” after drinking water. The Prophet (peace be upon him) praised Allah after drinking and established this as the proper etiquette of the believer. Some narrations include a longer version of thanks for the specific blessing of water.

Is there a specific dua for drinking water or just Alhamdulillah?

The primary dua is Alhamdulillah after drinking. There is also an established dua when drinking zamzam water specifically, where you make your personal supplication. For regular water, maintaining the habit of Alhamdulillah is the core Sunnah practice.

Should I say Bismillah before drinking water?

Yes. The dua before drinking water is 'Bismillah' โ€” just as before eating. The complete Sunnah is: Bismillah before drinking, sit while drinking, drink in three sips (not one gulp), and say Alhamdulillah after. Each of these is established in authentic hadith.

Why did the Prophet (peace be upon him) drink water in three sips?

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Do not drink in one gulp like a camel, but in two or three' (Tirmidhi 1885). Some scholars say it is for health benefits โ€” slower drinking aids digestion. Others emphasize the spiritual dimension: three sips with Bismillah at each creates three distinct moments of remembrance rather than one mindless gulp.

Is drinking while standing prohibited?

The Prophet (peace be upon him) prohibited drinking while standing in some narrations (Sahih Muslim 2024) but was also reported to have drunk while standing at the zamzam well in other narrations. Many scholars reconcile this by saying it is disliked (makruh) but not forbidden, and drinking from a well or standing structure where sitting is difficult is permissible.
