In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

You eat at least three times a day. That is over a thousand meals a year. And at each one, you have a choice that takes exactly one second: say Bismillah and transform that meal into an act of worship, or dive in and let it be just another automatic moment that passes without meaning.

Most Muslims know they should say Bismillah before eating. But knowing and doing are two very different things. The dua before eating is one of the simplest practices in the entire Sunnah โ€” and one of the most consistently forgotten. Not because it is hard. Because we are not in the habit.

This is about building that habit.

The Dua

ุจูุณู’ู…ู ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ู

Bismillah.

"In the name of Allah." โ€” (Sunan Abu Dawud 3767)

Simple. Three syllables. One moment of intention. That is the dua.

If you forget at the start:

ุจูุณู’ู…ู ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ู ูููŠ ุฃูŽูˆูŽู‘ู„ูู‡ู ูˆูŽุขุฎูุฑูู‡ู

Bismillahi fi awwalihi wa akhirihi.

"In the name of Allah at its beginning and its end." โ€” (Sunan Abu Dawud 3767)

Extended version (for those who want more):

ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ูู…ูŽู‘ ุจูŽุงุฑููƒู’ ู„ูŽู†ูŽุง ูููŠู…ูŽุง ุฑูŽุฒูŽู‚ู’ุชูŽู†ูŽุง ูˆูŽู‚ูู†ูŽุง ุนูŽุฐูŽุงุจูŽ ุงู„ู†ูŽู‘ุงุฑู

Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana wa qina 'adhaban-nar.

"O Allah, bless us in what You have provided us and protect us from the punishment of the Fire."

When to say it: At the very start of eating, before the first bite. If eating with others, say it quietly โ€” there is no need to wait for everyone to be seated before you begin your own remembrance.

The Story Behind It

A young boy named Umar ibn Abi Salamah was eating with the Prophet (peace be upon him). He was moving his hand all around the dish, grabbing food from different sides. The Prophet (peace be upon him) gently instructed him: "O young boy, say Bismillah, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is in front of you." Umar ibn Abi Salamah later said: "That has been my way of eating ever since" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5376).

What is beautiful about this story is the Prophet's gentleness โ€” he did not lecture or embarrass the boy. He gave him a simple, practical correction that the boy remembered for the rest of his life. That is exactly what this dua is: a simple correction to a default habit, anchored to one of your most automatic daily actions.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said: "When a person enters his home and mentions Allah when entering and before eating, Shaytan says: 'You have no place to spend the night and no dinner.' But if he enters without mentioning Allah, Shaytan says: 'You have found a place to spend the night.' And if he does not mention Allah before eating, Shaytan says: 'You have found a place to spend the night and dinner'" (Sahih Muslim 2018).

This is not superstition. It is a spiritual reality: the act of beginning with Allah's name sets the tone for everything that follows.

How to Make This Dua Part of Your Daily Life

The challenge with Bismillah before eating is not difficulty โ€” it is automation. Your hand reaches for the food before your mind has a chance to remember. The solution is to create a trigger that fires before the automatic behavior.

Habit stack it: The moment you sit down at a table or pick up food, that physical action becomes your cue. Before your hand moves to eat, your mouth says Bismillah. Train this sequence until it is as automatic as the eating itself.

Make it visible: Put a small note near your eating space โ€” at the dinner table, near your desk, or even on your lunch bag. A simple reminder like "ุจูุณู’ู…ู ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ู" is enough to pause and remember.

For families: Make Bismillah a collective habit. When you eat together, say it audibly and let it become the family's starting ritual. Children who grow up saying Bismillah before eating carry that habit for life โ€” it becomes as natural as washing their hands.

Pair it with gratitude: Right after saying Bismillah, take one second to look at your food and silently notice the blessing. The food in front of you represents Allah's provision โ€” rizq โ€” reaching you through a chain of effort and mercy that you had little control over. Bismillah opens that awareness every time.

When you mess up: You will forget. Everyone does. When you remember mid-meal, say the recovery dua โ€” Bismillahi fi awwalihi wa akhirihi โ€” and continue. Do not treat a forgotten Bismillah as a failure. Treat remembering as a win.

Track your meals. Even mentally noting "said Bismillah" creates the habit loop โ€” cue, routine, reward. The reward is knowing you turned a meal into worship.

Common Questions

Is it obligatory to say Bismillah before eating?

Scholars differ on whether it is obligatory (wajib) or highly recommended (Sunnah mu'akkadah). The majority position is that it is a strong Sunnah โ€” something the Prophet (peace be upon him) consistently taught and practiced. Leaving it without reason is something to be avoided; making a habit of it is something to be pursued.

What if I am eating in a place where saying Bismillah feels awkward?

You can say it quietly or in your heart. The remembrance of Allah does not require announcement. That said, do not be embarrassed to say Bismillah โ€” it is one of the most universally recognized Islamic phrases and rarely offends anyone in any context.

Should children be forced to say Bismillah?

"Forced" is the wrong word. Encouraged, modeled, and habituated โ€” yes. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught the boy Umar with gentleness, not force. Make Bismillah the normal start to every meal in your home, and children will adopt it naturally. See how to raise Muslim children for more on building Islamic habits in the family.

Does Bismillah apply to snacks and drinks too?

Yes. Any food or drink begins with Bismillah. The companion narrations do not limit it to formal meals โ€” it applies to any consumption.

Closing

The dua before eating is not a big spiritual achievement. It is a one-second habit that you can build starting at your very next meal. But multiply that one second by three meals a day, every day of your life, and you get something extraordinary: thousands of moments of remembrance, thousands of meals transformed into worship, a life woven through with the name of Allah.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that the best deeds are the consistent ones, even if they are small. Bismillah before eating is exactly that: small, consistent, and profound.

Start now. At your next meal. Say it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the dua to say before eating in Islam?

The primary dua before eating is 'Bismillah' โ€” In the name of Allah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught: 'When one of you eats, let him say Bismillah. If he forgets at the beginning, let him say: Bismillahi fi awwalihi wa akhirihi' (In the name of Allah at its beginning and its end) (Abu Dawud 3767).

What if I forget to say Bismillah before eating?

If you remember mid-meal, say: 'Bismillahi fi awwalihi wa akhirihi' โ€” In the name of Allah at its beginning and its end. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said this stops Shaytan from partaking in the meal even if you forgot at the start (Abu Dawud 3767).

Is there a longer dua before eating?

The established Sunnah dua is simply 'Bismillah' before starting. Some scholars recommend adding 'wa 'ala barakatillah' (and with the blessing of Allah). There is also a longer dua: 'Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana wa qina 'adhaban-nar' โ€” O Allah, bless us in what You have provided us and protect us from the punishment of the Fire. This is found in some hadith collections.

Do I need to say Bismillah aloud or silently?

Either is valid. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said it aloud to teach the habit but silent remembrance is equally acceptable. What matters is the intention and the sincere remembrance of Allah at the start of your meal.

Does saying Bismillah before eating have any benefits?

Yes. Beyond the spiritual benefit of remembering Allah, the Prophet (peace be upon him) taught that saying Bismillah prevents Shaytan from eating with you and prevents him from entering your home (Sahih Muslim 2018). It also brings barakah (blessing) to the food and is a daily act of worship that costs nothing but a moment of mindfulness.
