In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Prayer beads resting on an open Quran, warm dawn light through an arched window, deep green and gold tones

There is a particular kind of fear that comes when you suspect something invisible is working against you. Unexplained illness. Relationships falling apart without reason. A heaviness that no doctor can diagnose. An inability to focus in prayer that feels different from ordinary distraction. These are the moments when many Muslims find themselves searching for answers about sihr โ€” black magic.

Islam does not dismiss these concerns as superstition. The Quran addresses sihr directly. The Prophet (peace be upon him) experienced it personally. And Allah, in His mercy, revealed the exact protection you need โ€” words so powerful that the Prophet (peace be upon him) never left home without them.

The Dua

The primary protection duas against sihr are the Mu'awwidhatain โ€” the two surahs of seeking refuge:

"Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of the daybreak, from the evil of what He has created, from the evil of darkness when it settles, from the evil of those who blow on knots, and from the evil of the envier when he envies." โ€” (Surah Al-Falaq, 113:1-5)

The phrase "those who blow on knots" is a direct reference to practitioners of magic who tie knots and blow upon them to cast spells. This surah was revealed specifically to address this reality.

"Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind, the King of mankind, the God of mankind, from the evil of the retreating whisperer โ€” who whispers in the breasts of mankind โ€” from jinn and men." โ€” (Surah An-Nas, 114:1-6)

Recite: Three times each in the morning and evening, and three times before sleeping. Blow into your hands after each recitation and wipe over your body.

The Story Behind It

The Prophet (peace be upon him) was afflicted by sihr by a Jewish man named Labid ibn al-Asam, who used the hair from the Prophet's comb and tied it in knots under a rock in a well. This caused the Prophet (peace be upon him) to experience confusion and false impressions for a period.

Then Jibreel (peace be upon him) came and informed the Prophet of what had been done and where the object was found. The companions retrieved it, and as each knot was untied, the Prophet (peace be upon him) felt relief. It was during this period that Surahs Al-Falaq and An-Nas were revealed โ€” directly in response to the Prophet's experience โ€” as the definitive Quranic answer to sihr (Sahih al-Bukhari 3175).

The message is profound: even the most beloved human being was tested by sihr. And Allah's answer was revelation โ€” words to recite, a practice to maintain.

How to Make This Dua Part of Your Daily Life

Protection from sihr is not a one-time emergency treatment. It is a daily practice. Think of it like the immune system โ€” it needs constant nourishment to stay strong, not just attention when illness strikes.

The core daily routine (see how to do morning adhkar for the full sequence):

  • After Fajr: Recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas three times each. Blow into your hands and wipe over your body, starting from your face.
  • After Asr or Maghrib: Repeat the same routine.
  • Before sleeping: Recite Ayat al-Kursi once, then the three Quls three times. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi before sleeping will have a guardian from Allah until morning, and no devil will approach them (Sahih al-Bukhari 5010).

If you suspect active affliction โ€” add this practice:

Recite Surah Al-Baqarah in your home regularly. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Recite Surah Al-Baqarah in your homes, for Shaytan does not enter a home in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited" (Sahih Muslim 780). This is both prevention and treatment.

What NOT to do: Never seek help from fortune tellers, magicians, or people who claim they can remove sihr using sihr. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever goes to a fortune teller or soothsayer and believes what he says has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad" (Abu Dawud 3904). The cure cannot come from the disease.

Build the habit. Track your consistency. Every morning you complete your adhkar is a morning you are spiritually fortified.

Common Questions

How do I know if I have been affected by sihr versus just going through a hard time?

This is an important distinction. Most hardships in life are tests from Allah, not the result of sihr. Be careful not to attribute every difficulty to magic โ€” that can lead to paranoia and bad assumptions about others. The signs scholars mention for potential sihr include: sudden, inexplicable personality changes; severe, unexplained physical symptoms that doctors cannot identify; and strong feelings during prayer that feel like external interference. When in doubt, consult a scholar, not a "healer."

Is ruqyah from a qualified person better than self-ruqyah?

Self-ruqyah using Quran is always valid and encouraged. Seeking ruqyah from a righteous Muslim scholar or practitioner is also permissible. The key is that ruqyah must use only Quran and authentic duas โ€” never shirk, symbols, or rituals from other traditions.

Can I do ruqyah for my family members?

Yes. The Prophet (peace be upon him) performed ruqyah for his family. Reciting the three Quls and blowing over your spouse or children is Sunnah.

Does avoiding haram protect me from sihr?

Yes, indirectly. The scholars mention that those who maintain their obligations and avoid major sins have a natural spiritual fortification. Sin weakens the spiritual immune system. Consistent prayer, dhikr, and Quran recitation are simultaneously acts of worship and forms of protection.

Closing

You are not helpless against what you cannot see. Allah gave you words โ€” tested, revealed, powerful โ€” that no sihr can withstand when recited consistently with sincerity.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) was tested by black magic and emerged with revelation. Your response to fear and uncertainty should be the same: return to the Quran, return to the adhkar, return to Allah.

Start your morning and evening routine tonight. Build the streak. Protection is a daily habit, not a one-time prayer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is black magic (sihr) real in Islam?

Yes. The Quran explicitly mentions sihr (magic) in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:102) as something that was practiced and caused harm. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was himself affected by sihr, known as the incident of the 'spell of Labid ibn al-Asam' โ€” and Allah revealed Surahs Al-Falaq and An-Nas as protection. These facts are established in Sahih al-Bukhari.

What is the most powerful dua against black magic?

The three Quls โ€” Surah Al-Ikhlas (112), Al-Falaq (113), and An-Nas (114) โ€” are specifically revealed as protection from harm including magic. Ayat al-Kursi (2:255) is also a powerful shield. Recited morning, evening, and before sleep, they form the core of Islamic protection from sihr.

Do I need to see a specialist (raqiq) if I suspect sihr?

If you genuinely suspect you have been afflicted by sihr, consulting a scholar or qualified practitioner of ruqyah is acceptable. However, maintaining your daily adhkar and Quran recitation is both prevention and treatment. Never seek help from fortune tellers or practitioners of magic โ€” that is categorically forbidden and constitutes shirk.

How long does it take for protection duas to work against sihr?

There is no fixed timeline. The duas are a means โ€” Allah is the healer and protector. Consistency over weeks and months builds the spiritual shield. Many practitioners of ruqyah advise reciting Ayat al-Kursi and the last two chapters of the Quran morning and evening for at least 40 days continuously.

Can I perform ruqyah on myself?

Yes. Self-ruqyah (reciting Quran over yourself with the intention of healing and protection) is established in the Sunnah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to blow over himself after reciting the three Quls. You can also recite over water and drink it, or recite with your hands and wipe your body.
