What Is Umrah? The Voluntary Pilgrimage to Mecca Explained

There is no other experience quite like it. You round the corner, and there is the Kaaba — black, ancient, completely still while thousands of people circle it. For a moment, everything else in your life feels very small.

This is Umrah. And unlike Hajj, you do not have to wait for a specific month or age or financial milestone to go. The door is open.

What Umrah Is

Umrah (عُمْرَة) is the lesser Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca. The word in Arabic means "to visit a populated place" — specifically, in Islamic context, to visit the sacred sites.

Unlike Hajj — which is obligatory, has fixed dates, and involves a comprehensive set of rituals — Umrah is:

• Voluntary (or strongly recommended, depending on the school of thought)
• Performable any time of year
• Shorter — the core rituals can be completed in hours, though most stay days

The Prophet ﷺ described its reward:

"Umrah to Umrah are an expiation for what is between them." — (Sahih Muslim 1349)

Between any two Umrahs a person performs, the minor sins they committed are forgiven. This is an extraordinary gift for a voluntary act.

The Rituals of Umrah

1. Entering Ihram — The Sacred State

Before reaching the miqat (designated entry points around Mecca), every pilgrim must enter a state called ihram — a sacred consecration that signals the beginning of the pilgrimage.

For men, this means wearing two white, seamless cloths (izar and rida) — one wrapped around the waist, one draped over the upper body. For women, it means being in full, modest Islamic covering with the face and hands uncovered (no face veil in ihram according to the majority view).

Upon entering ihram, you make the niyyah (intention) for Umrah and begin reciting the talbiyah:

لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ، إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَالنِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَالْمُلْكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ

Labbayk Allahumma labbayk. Labbayk la sharika laka labbayk. Innal-hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk, la sharika lak.

"Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am; You have no partner; here I am. Indeed, praise, grace, and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner."

During ihram, the following are prohibited: cutting hair or nails, using perfume, wearing stitched clothing (for men), sexual relations, hunting, and cutting trees in the sacred precincts.

2. Tawaf — Circling the Kaaba

Upon entering Masjid al-Haram, you perform tawaf — seven counter-clockwise circuits around the Kaaba, starting and ending at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad).

The Kaaba is the first house of worship built for humanity, established by Ibrahim and Ismail (peace be upon them) under Allah's command:

وَإِذْ يَرْفَعُ إِبْرَاهِيمُ الْقَوَاعِدَ مِنَ الْبَيْتِ وَإِسْمَاعِيلُ

Wa idh yarfa'u Ibrahimu al-qawa'ida minal-bayti wa Isma'ilu.

"And when Ibrahim was raising the foundations of the House with Ismail." — (Quran 2:127)

During tawaf, there is no specific dua required. You make any dua you wish, recite Quran, make dhikr, or simply walk in contemplation. The recommended practice at the end of each circuit is to say:

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar.

"Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the next, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire." — (Quran 2:201)

3. Sa'i — Walking Between Safa and Marwa

After tawaf, you perform sa'i: walking seven times between the two hills of Safa and Marwa inside the mosque complex.

This re-enacts the desperate search of Hajar (Hagar) — the wife of Ibrahim — for water for her infant son Ismail after they were left in the valley of Mecca. Her faith, her running, her trust in Allah — and the miracle of Zamzam water springing from the earth — are honoured in every sa'i walk since.

Allah made this act an eternal ritual:

إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِن شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ

Innas-safa wal-marwata min sha'a'irillah.

"Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah." — (Quran 2:158)

4. Halq or Taqsir — Cutting the Hair

The final ritual is cutting the hair. For men, the preferred act (halq) is shaving the head completely. Trimming (taqsir) — cutting at least one centimetre from all sides — is also valid. For women, only trimming a small portion is prescribed; shaving is not permitted.

Cutting the hair marks the exit from the state of ihram. All the ihram restrictions are lifted, and the Umrah is complete.

The Best Time for Umrah

While Umrah can be performed any time, several periods carry special virtue:

• During Ramadan: The Prophet ﷺ said it equals Hajj in reward (Bukhari 1764)
• During the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah (before Hajj): Combining the blessed days with the sacred sites
• During Rajab: A historically popular month for Umrah
• Anytime outside of the Hajj season (8th to 13th Dhul Hijjah): These days are reserved for Hajj pilgrims

Preparing for Umrah — Beyond the Logistics

Travel agencies, visas, flight bookings — the logistical side of Umrah is well documented. What is less discussed is the spiritual preparation.

The Prophet ﷺ described Hajj (and by extension, the sacred journey generally) as requiring that you "commit no obscenity or wrongdoing." The quality of your heart going into Mecca determines the quality of your experience and the lasting change it creates.

Practical spiritual preparation:

• Make sincere tawbah before you go — enter the sacred precincts as clean internally as you can make yourself
• Build your daily dua and dhikr practice before the trip — they will anchor you when you are physically exhausted in crowded spaces
• Learn the duas for each ritual so you can make them with presence, not just motion
• Read about Hajar's story and Ibrahim's story — let the sa'i and tawaf be meaningful, not just exercise

The dua for travel and dua for guidance are worth memorising before the journey.

Common Questions

Do I need a mahram (male guardian) for Umrah?

For women travelling for Hajj and Umrah, the Shafi'i and Maliki schools permit women to travel with a trustworthy group of women or a reliable travel group even without a mahram, particularly if the journey is well-organised and safe. The Hanafi and Hanbali schools require a mahram for any travel beyond 77 km. Check with scholars from your tradition for a ruling applicable to your specific situation.

Can I perform Umrah multiple times?

Yes. Unlike Hajj, Umrah can be performed as many times as you wish, and there is reward for each one. Many Muslims perform Umrah once a year if they are able.

Is there a specific dua for Umrah?

The talbiyah is the signature supplication of Umrah. Beyond that, the trip is an open invitation to make whatever duas are closest to your heart. Allah is especially near in the sacred precincts — the dua you have been carrying for years belongs there.

What should I do in Mecca beyond the rituals?

Pray in Masjid al-Haram as much as possible — each prayer there is worth 100,000 prayers elsewhere according to hadith. Drink Zamzam water. Sit facing the Kaaba and make long duas. Recite Quran. Visit the Mosque of the Prophet in Medina if your itinerary allows.

Umrah is a gift of access — to the first house of worship, to the history of our prophets, to a space where dua is answered with exceptional openness. It does not require the specific window of Hajj. It does not require decades of savings. It asks for intention, preparation, and showing up.
