In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Every Muslim asks for guidance at least seventeen times each day without realizing it.
Ihdina as-sirat al-mustaqim โ Guide us to the straight path โ is the central request of Surah Al-Fatiha, recited in every unit of every prayer. Allah designed the most repeated dua in a Muslim's life to be a request for guidance. That tells you something about how important this supplication is, and how much of it we need.
Guidance is not a one-time event. It is not the moment you took your shahada or the moment you returned to prayer after years away. It is a daily, continuous need. The straight path requires ongoing navigation โ and the dua for guidance is how a Muslim asks for the capacity to keep walking it.
The Duas
From Surah Al-Fatiha โ said at least 17 times daily in Salah:
ุงููุฏูููุง ุงูุตููุฑูุงุทู ุงููู ูุณูุชููููู ู
Ihdina as-sirat al-mustaqim.
"Guide us to the straight path." โ (Quran 1:6)
The Prophet's comprehensive dua for guidance โ said regularly:
ุงููููููู ูู ุฅููููู ุฃูุณูุฃููููู ุงููููุฏูู ููุงูุชููููู ููุงููุนูููุงูู ููุงููุบูููู
Allahumma inni as'aluka al-huda wat-tuqa wal-afafa wal-ghina.
"O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency." โ (Muslim 2721)
This four-part request covers the whole person: huda (guidance toward what is right), tuqa (taqwa โ the God-consciousness to act on it), afaf (chastity and restraint from what is forbidden), and ghina (the contentment that frees you from depending on other than Allah). Together, these four are a complete description of a grounded Muslim life.
The dua for firmness on the right path:
ููุง ู ููููููุจู ุงูููููููุจู ุซูุจููุชู ููููุจูู ุนูููู ุฏูููููู
Ya Muqallib al-qulub, thabbit qalbi ala dinik.
"O Turner of hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion." โ (Tirmidhi 3522)
The Story Behind It
The Companions noticed that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said ya Muqallib al-qulub frequently. Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) asked him about it. He explained: "O Umm Salamah, there is not a human being except that his heart is between two of the Fingers of the Most Merciful. Whomever He wills, He keeps firm, and whomever He wills, He causes to deviate." (Tirmidhi 3522)
This hadith is sobering. The Prophet himself โ the best of creation, the man guaranteed Jannah โ said this dua often. Not from doubt about his own state, but from the deep understanding that guidance is always a gift from Allah, never something a person achieves and then keeps independently.
The Companions took this seriously. They understood that no Muslim is beyond the need to ask for continued guidance. And they saw in the Prophet's practice that the appropriate response to this reality is not anxiety โ it is dua, repeated and sincere.
The request for guidance is also embedded in the most important Quranic supplication ever recorded: Surah Al-Fatiha, the opening of the Quran, which Allah commanded to be the opening of every prayer. That placement was not incidental. Guidance is where every conversation with Allah should begin.
How to Make Dua for Guidance a Living Practice
Most Muslims recite Surah Al-Fatiha on autopilot. The words flow, the prayer continues, and the request for guidance passes by seventeen times a day without landing. Turning this into a real, felt supplication is one of the most important habits a Muslim can develop.
Slow down in Al-Fatiha. The next time you stand in Salah, pause when you reach ihdina as-sirat al-mustaqim. Say it as if you mean it โ because you do need it. Picture what the straight path looks like in your actual life, in the specific situations you are facing right now. Let the word ihdina land as a genuine request, not a recitation.
Add the Prophet's four-part dua after each prayer. Allahumma inni as'aluka al-huda wat-tuqa wal-afafa wal-ghina takes under thirty seconds. Adding it after the post-Salah adhkar means you are asking for guidance, taqwa, chastity, and contentment ten or more times a day. The cumulative weight of that is enormous.
Say ya Muqallib al-qulub when your heart feels unstable. This dua is particularly powerful in moments of spiritual weakness โ when a sin feels appealing, when your faith feels low, when you are unsure of a decision. It is the Prophet's own supplication for exactly those moments: "O Turner of hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion."
Treat istikhara as your tool for specific guidance. For major decisions โ career, marriage, relocation, a significant commitment โ the dua for istikhara is how you ask Allah for guidance in that particular matter. It is guidance-seeking made specific and actionable. Use it before you decide, not after.
Notice and acknowledge guidance when it comes. A habit that reinforces itself is one where you recognize the results. When you make a decision that turns out right, when you avoid a sin you would normally have fallen into, when your heart softens โ say Alhamdulillah and recognize it as guidance. Gratitude for guidance received opens the door for more.

Common Questions
Can you lose guidance once you have it?
Yes โ this is precisely why the Prophet said ya Muqallib al-qulub so often. Guidance is not a permanent state that a person achieves and then keeps automatically. Hearts change. Circumstances change. Sins accumulate. The Muslim is commanded to ask for guidance continuously because it is continuously needed. This is not meant to create anxiety โ it is meant to create reliance on Allah rather than self-reliance.
Is there a dua for someone you love who has left Islam or stopped practicing?
Make dua for them sincerely: Allahumma ihdi [person's name] โ O Allah, guide [name]. The Prophet's own uncle Abu Talib died outside of Islam despite the Prophet's deep love for him and sincere dua. What this teaches is that hidayah ultimately belongs to Allah โ but we are still commanded to ask for it for those we love. Do not stop making dua.
What is the difference between asking for guidance and asking for something specific?
Guidance (hidayah) is the foundation. Specific requests are built on top of it. When you ask for guidance, you are asking to be shown the right path and given the capacity to walk it. When you make specific dua โ for a job, for health, for a spouse โ you are asking for particular provisions within that path. The two work together. Do not neglect either.
Closing
You are already asking for guidance seventeen times a day. The question is whether you are actually asking.
The dua for guidance is not meant to be a background hum in your prayers. It is meant to be a genuine request from a person who knows they need it โ which is every Muslim, every day, without exception. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked for it. The Companions asked for it. The most pious Muslims in history never stopped asking for it.
Neither should you.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the dua for guidance in Islam?
The most comprehensive dua for guidance is from Surah Al-Fatiha: Ihdina as-sirat al-mustaqim โ Guide us to the straight path. This is recited at least seventeen times daily in Salah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) also taught: Allahumma inni as'aluka al-huda wat-tuqa wal-afafa wal-ghina โ O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency. (Muslim 2721)
What does 'guidance' mean in Islam?
Guidance in Islam โ hidayah โ has two levels. The first is general guidance: knowing what is right (Islam itself). The second is specific, ongoing guidance: being enabled and given the tawfiq to actually follow it in daily life. Most Muslims already have the first. The dua is for the second โ the daily capacity to act on what you know.
Is there a dua for someone who has gone astray?
Yes. You can make dua for a Muslim who has drifted: Allahumma ihdi fulan โ O Allah, guide so-and-so. The Prophet (peace be upon him) himself made dua for individuals by name. What you should avoid is giving up on making dua for a fellow Muslim โ guidance is in Allah's hands and can come at any time.
What is the dua for guidance in Salah al-Istikhara?
Salat al-Istikhara includes a comprehensive dua for guidance in a specific decision. See the full guide at /blog/dua-for-istikhara for the complete text and how to use it correctly.
How do I know if my dua for guidance has been answered?
Signs of accepted guidance include a growing ease with good deeds, discomfort when approaching sin, a heart that inclines toward Allah in difficulty, and a life that begins to align with what pleases Allah. Guidance is not always dramatic โ often it arrives as a quiet reorientation of your priorities and desires over time.
