In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

A person kneeling in voluntary prayer at night, hands raised in supplication, soft lamp light, humble and focused posture

There are times when ordinary dua feels insufficient for the size of what you need. The job situation, the health crisis, the relationship breaking down, the debt accumulating โ€” something about the weight of it makes you feel like you need to do something more than just ask.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) understood this. He did not just teach words to say when needs are pressing โ€” he taught a complete act of worship to perform when needs are pressing.

Salat ul Hajat. The Prayer of Need.

The Dua for Salat ul Hajat

The complete dua after the prayer

After completing two rakah and praising Allah and sending salawat on the Prophet, say:

La tada' li dhanban illa ghafartah, wa la hamman illa farrjajtah, wa la hajatan hiya laka ridan illa qadaytaha ya arhamar rahimin.

"There is no god but Allah, the Forbearing, the Generous. Glory be to Allah, Lord of the Mighty Throne. All praise is for Allah, Lord of all worlds. I ask You for the causes of Your mercy, the resolve of Your forgiveness, the benefit of every act of goodness, and safety from every sin. Leave no sin of mine unforgiven, no distress unrelieved, and no need โ€” if its fulfillment pleases You โ€” unmet. O Most Merciful of those who show mercy." โ€” (Tirmidhi 479)

Then ask for your specific need, in your own words.

The Story Behind the Prayer of Need

Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever has a need โ€” from Allah or from a human being โ€” let him perform wudu and make it excellent, then pray two rakah, then praise Allah and exalt Him, and send salawat on the Prophet ๏ทบ. Then say..." and he taught the dua above. (Tirmidhi 479)

The instruction covers a remarkable range: a need "from Allah or from a human being." Not just spiritual needs โ€” also interpersonal, worldly, material. You need a favor from your manager. You need a loan repaid. You need your spouse to understand. You need a difficult conversation to go well. The Prophet taught: for any of these, turn to Allah first with two rakah.

This reflects the Islamic understanding that all causes and outcomes ultimately flow through Allah. The human being who can help you โ€” their willingness to help, their capacity to help, even whether they happen to be available โ€” all of this is in Allah's control. Praying for the human means is not bypassing Allah; it is approaching the Source of all help directly.

How to Pray Salat ul Hajat Correctly

The structure is simple:

  1. Make wudu โ€” and make it properly. The hadith says "let him perform wudu well." This is not perfunctory. The wudu for Salat ul Hajat is part of the preparation.

  2. Pray two rakah โ€” with any short surahs after Al-Fatiha. There are no specific surahs prescribed for Salat ul Hajat.

  3. Praise Allah โ€” after the tasleem, say Alhamdulillah and acknowledge Allah's greatness.

  4. Send salawat โ€” send blessings on the Prophet: Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad.

  5. Say the prescribed dua โ€” the dua from Tirmidhi 479. This is the specific text the Prophet taught for this prayer.

  6. Then ask for your need โ€” in Arabic or your language. Be specific. Say exactly what you need, what you are facing, and ask directly.

When to pray it: Any time outside the three prohibited prayer times. Praying it at night โ€” especially in the last third โ€” is particularly powerful because you are combining the prayer of need with the night when duas are most likely accepted.

Repeat it: If the need is serious and ongoing, repeat Salat ul Hajat over multiple days. There is nothing in the hadith that limits it to once. The Prophet prayed istikharah repeatedly when facing major decisions. The same principle applies here.

After the dua โ€” tawakkul: Once you have prayed, take your practical steps and release the outcome. Salat ul Hajat is not a technique to force a specific result โ€” it is a posture of asking while fully acknowledging that what Allah gives is better than what you envision. Combine the prayer with real effort, and leave the rest to Allah.

Dua for istikhara: When the need involves a decision between two options, Salat ul Istikhara is the appropriate prayer. See dua for istikhara for the complete prayer and supplication.

Dua for tawakkul: The right mindset after Salat ul Hajat is complete reliance on Allah's judgment. See dua for tawakkul for supplications that build this posture of trust.

Dua for ease: When what you need is relief from difficulty โ€” not a specific outcome but a lightening of the burden โ€” pair Salat ul Hajat with the dua for ease.

Dua for hardship: For sustained difficulties where the need continues over time, the dua for hardship provides the prophetic supplications for enduring what is difficult.

Common Questions

Can I pray Salat ul Hajat for someone else's need?

Yes. If someone you care about has a pressing need, you can perform Salat ul Hajat on their behalf โ€” asking Allah to fulfill their need. Dua for another Muslim in their absence is particularly blessed. The prayer is not restricted to personal needs only.

What if I prayed Salat ul Hajat and my need was not fulfilled?

The Prophet taught that every sincere dua is answered โ€” either the request is granted, something better is given, or a harm is averted that you were not aware of. When the specific outcome you sought does not materialize, one of the other two forms of divine response has occurred. This requires patience (sabr) and the trust that Allah's judgment about what is best for you is more reliable than your own.

Is Salat ul Hajat a bid'ah (innovation)?

No. It is a well-authenticated practice based on a hadith in Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah, narrated by Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa. The hadith is considered acceptable and has been acted upon by scholars across generations. It is a recognized voluntary prayer with authentic basis.

Can I pray it during Ramadan or on Jummah?

Yes โ€” both are recommended times for voluntary worship and dua. Praying Salat ul Hajat in Ramadan, on Friday, or during the last third of the night combines multiple windows of divine response.

Closing

When you have a need too big to hold alone, the Prophet taught you what to do: make wudu, stand before Allah, pray two rakah, and ask.

Not because prayer is magic. Because prayer is the honest acknowledgment that you are not the source of solutions, Allah is. That clarity โ€” presented through the specific form of Salat ul Hajat โ€” is itself a form of worship that changes the asker as much as it addresses the asked-for need.

Whatever you are carrying right now โ€” make wudu. Pray. Ask. Then trust.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Salat ul Hajat?

Salat ul Hajat is the Prayer of Need โ€” a voluntary prayer performed when a person has a pressing worldly or spiritual need. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Whoever has a need from Allah or from a human being, let him perform wudu well, pray two rakah, then praise Allah and send salawat on the Prophet, then say: La ilaha illallahul halimul karim... (Tirmidhi 479)

How many rakah is Salat ul Hajat?

Salat ul Hajat is two rakah. After completing the prayer, there is a specific supplication to say. Some narrations mention four rakah, but the hadith in Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah specify two rakah, which is the widely accepted practice.

Can Salat ul Hajat be prayed at any time?

It can be prayed at any time except the three prohibited times: after Fajr until the sun has fully risen, when the sun is at its zenith (midday), and after Asr until sunset. Outside these three windows, Salat ul Hajat can be performed whenever a need arises. The night โ€” especially the last third โ€” is particularly appropriate given the elevated state of dua acceptance.

Does Salat ul Hajat guarantee that your need is fulfilled?

No prayer is a guarantee of a specific outcome. The Prophet taught this prayer as the proper way to approach Allah with a need โ€” not as a contract for a specific answer. The hadith says Allah will give the person what He wills, or what is better. Trust in Allah's wisdom means accepting that the answer might look different from what you expected, while still being what you needed.

What is the dua after Salat ul Hajat?

After the two rakah, say: La ilaha illallahul halimul karim, subhanallaahi rabbil arshil azim, alhamdulillahi rabbil alamin, as'aluka mujibati rahmatik, wa azaima maghfiratik, wal ghanimata min kulli birr, was-salamata min kulli ithm. La tada' li dhanban illa ghafartah, wa la hamman illa farrjatah, wa la hajatan hiya laka ridan illa qadaytaha ya arhamar rahimin. (Tirmidhi 479)
