Surah for Evil Eye: Quranic Protection from Al-Ayn

You may have dismissed the evil eye as superstition — something cultural, not Islamic. Or you may have grown up with so much emphasis on it that you are not sure what to actually believe. Both responses are common. Islam cuts through both with clarity.

The evil eye is real. The Quran contains specific protection against it. And the Prophet ﷺ left us exact prescriptions for both preventing it and treating it.

What the Quran and Sunnah Say About Al-Ayn

The Prophet ﷺ said:

الْعَيْنُ حَقٌّ وَلَوْ كَانَ شَيْءٌ سَابَقَ الْقَدَرَ سَبَقَتْهُ الْعَيْنُ

Al-'aynu haqqun, wa law kana shay'un sabaqal-qadara, sabaqathu al-'ayn

"The evil eye is real, and if anything were to overtake the divine decree, it would be the evil eye." — (Sahih Muslim 2188)

This is explicit. Al-ayn — the evil eye — is not folk superstition. It is acknowledged as real in authentic hadith. The harm it can cause is real enough that the Prophet ﷺ compared its power to the divine decree itself.

The Quran addresses it directly. Allah says in Surah Al-Falaq (113:5):

وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ

Wa min sharri hasidin idha hasad

"And from the evil of the envier when he envies." — (Surah Al-Falaq, 113:5)

The surah explicitly names the harm that comes from envy — and prescribes the protection for it: seeking refuge in the Lord of the daybreak.

The Primary Surah: Al-Falaq

Surah Al-Falaq (Chapter 113) is a short, powerful surah of five verses. It asks Allah for refuge from four categories of harm:

1. The evil of everything He has created (general protection)
2. The darkness of night when it falls (nocturnal dangers)
3. Those who blow into knots — a reference to sorcery
4. The envious person when they envy — directly addressing the evil eye

The Prophet ﷺ said of this surah:

"There have not been revealed any surahs like them." — (Sunan al-Nasa'i 5432)

Al-Falaq is the direct Quranic shield against the harm of envy and evil gazes.

Al-Falaq and An-Nas Together — The Mu'awwidhatayn

The two surahs are almost always paired. An-Nas (Chapter 114) covers the internal whispers that feed envy and ill-will — the whispers of Shaytan and of human malice. Together, Al-Falaq and An-Nas form the Mu'awwidhatayn — the two shelter surahs — and function as a comprehensive protection package.

The Prophet ﷺ was personally afflicted by the effects of envy and black magic, and these surahs were revealed specifically in that context. They are not theoretical protection — they are the cure the Prophet ﷺ himself received and used.

Ayatul Kursi — The Greatest Verse of Protection

Alongside the Mu'awwidhatayn, the scholars of ruqyah (Islamic healing) consistently prescribe Ayatul Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:255):

اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ...

"Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence..." — (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:255)

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever recites Ayatul Kursi in the evening, Allah will continue to protect him until the morning." (Sahih Bukhari 2311). Protection through the night includes protection from the lingering effects of the evil eye.

The Daily Protection Protocol

The Prophet ﷺ recited the Mu'awwidhatayn — Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas — three times each morning (after Fajr) and evening (after Asr/Maghrib), blowing gently onto his hands and wiping over his face and chest. This is the Prophetic prescribed practice. (Sunan Abi Dawud 5056)

How to Protect Others From Your Own Gaze

This is often missed: the evil eye can come from you. When you see something beautiful — a person, an achievement, a possession — and you feel admiration or envy rise in your heart, say immediately:

اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ

Allahumma barik

"O Allah, bless it."

Or the Quranic phrase:

مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ

Ma sha Allah, la quwwata illa billah

"Whatever Allah wills — there is no power except with Allah." — (Surah Al-Kahf, 18:39)

This supplication channels the admiration toward Allah and breaks the harmful element of the gaze. The Prophet ﷺ modeled this consistently — he did not admire without making dua for barakah. And dua for protection from envy gives you more tools for this.

When Someone is Affected — The Treatment

If you believe someone has been harmed by the evil eye, the Islamic treatment (ruqyah) involves:

1. Recitation over them: Recite Al-Fatiha, Ayatul Kursi, the last two verses of Al-Baqarah, and the Mu'awwidhatayn — blowing lightly onto water, which the affected person then drinks and washes with.
2. Prayer and dua: Ask Allah directly to remove the harm.
3. Seeking the source: If the person who gave the evil eye is known, scholars say they should be asked to perform ablution, and the water used should be poured over the affected person. (Sunan Abi Dawud 3880)
4. Trust in Allah: The treatment is a means; Allah is the Healer. Make sincere dua for complete healing and trust in His response.

Common Questions

Is wearing the evil eye symbol (blue eye) for protection permissible? Scholars consider wearing talismans for protection — including the blue eye symbol — to be shirk if one believes the object itself protects rather than Allah. How often should I recite the protection surahs? The Prophetic prescription is three times each morning and evening. Additional recitation throughout the day — especially when entering gatherings, before posting something publicly, or after receiving compliments — adds further protection.

Can children be protected from the evil eye? Yes — the Prophet ﷺ sought protection for Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn specifically using the following words: "I seek refuge for you both in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every poisonous pest, and from every evil eye." (Sahih Bukhari 3371). Reciting this over children before sleep is a Prophetic sunnah.
